    Unique ceramics from the collection of Marina Picasso, the artist’s grand daughter, come up at Sotheby’s in London on June 25.   The 126 lots – comprising hand painted plates, vases and tiles, hand modelled figures and sculptural pieces – are estimated to bring in around £4.5 million.  Here is a small selection:

    IRISH ART AT DE VERES ON JUNE 16

    There is Landscape and abstract art and sculpture by some of Ireland’s leading artists de Veres in Dublin on June 16. The auction of 105 lots includes  Pony in a Connemara Garden by Gerard Dillon (30,000-40,000), Reclining Figure by Dan O’Neill (14,000-18,000), Stephen’s Green, Dublin by Louis le Brocquy (8,000-12,000), Tony O’Malley’s Good Friday/Easter Sunday (12,000-18,000), Peter Curling’s Horse Fair at Goresbridge (20,000-25,000) and Return of Ulysses by Hughie O’Donoghue (8,000-12,000).

    LETTERS FROM FREUD TO SPENDER AT SOTHEBY’S

    Never before seen letters from a teenage Lucian Freud to his friend the poet Stephen Spender come up at Sotheby’s contemporary art day auction in London on July 2. Ten unpublished letters written by the artist to the famous poet and critic Stephen Spender (1909–1995) have emerged from the Spender family collection after 70 years.

    Populated by drawings and watercolour paintings, one letter shows a man pulling a miniature horse on a lead, while in another, a figure balances on the head of a flying bird and a small man rides a horse atop an ear.

    Dating from 1939-42 while Freud was studying under the tutelage of  Cedric Morris at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing in Essex they are estimated at £28,000-42,000.

    Works by Sir John Lavery, Paul Henry and William John Leech will feature at Bonhams sale of Modern British and Irish art in London on June 10.  Moonlight – the Bridge by Lavery is estimated at £25,000-35,000 while The Pool in the Bog by Paul Henry has an estimate of £15,000-20,000.  Les Enfants and les Ombres by William John Leech is estimated at £8,000-12,000.

    A brace of paintings by Walter Osborne, A boy on a donkey in a landscape and Joe the Swineherd come up at Bonhams sale of 19th century European, Victorian and British Impressionist Art in London on June 23.   Bonhams sale of Old Master Paintings in London on July 8 will include A Landscape Based on Dawson Grove, Co. Monaghan with the Artist Sketching by William Ashford.

    UPDATE:  William John Leech’s Les Enfants et les Ombres sold for £21,250 and The Bishop’s Castle Tearooms by Sir John Lavery sold for £37,500 over an estimate of £30,000-50,000.

    A William Scott Still Life will highlight Irish entries at Christie’s Modern British and Irish Art evening sale in London on June 25.  It is estimated at £150,000-250,000.  The 40 lot auction is headed by Dame Barbara Hepworth’s Two Forms with White (Greek) estimated at £1.3 to 1.8 million. There are works by L.S. Lowry, Sir Stanley Spencer, Ben Nicholson, Sir Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield and Mark Gertler.  Estimates for this sale range from £20,000 to £1.3 million.

    The day sale on June 26  features two works by Yeats, The Light of the Town (£40,000-60,000) and The Tops of the Mountains (£20,000-30,000).  There are 146 works in this sale with estimates starting at just £1,500.

    An elegantly proportioned writing desk attributed to William Vile is the top lot at the James Adam  Sunday Interiors auction in Dublin on June 14.  The late George II serpentine fronted desk, made c1755, is estimated at 18,000-22,000.

    The sale is particularly strong in fine furniture, which comprise the top seven lots.  A fine Regency circular dining table possibly made by William Trotter of Edinburgh, is estimated at 15,000 -20,000 and an exceptionally well made George IV breakfront bookcase by James Winter & Sons estimated at 10,000 -15,000.

    Though William Vile is considered one of the best English cabinetmakers of the Georgian era his name is overshadowed by Thomas Chippendale.

    SIGNED 1st EDITION OF ULYSSES AT BONHAMS

    A signed first edition of  James Joyce’s Ulysses comes up at Bonhams Fine Books and Manuscripts sale in London on June 24. It is part of a large collection of Joyce’s work to be offered.  Ulysses is estimated at £60,000-80,000 and the collection has a combined upper estimate of £300,000.

    The author’s presentation copy printed on hand made paper was given to Lewis Galantiere, an American translator of French literature living in Paris. There he met Joyce and other leading literary figures of the day.  Dated February 11, 1922, this is the earliest known presentation copy apart from the one Joyce gave to his wife Nora on the day of publication, February 2, 1922, the author’s 40th birthday.  Printing was hampered by difficulties over the colour for the cover which Joyce wanted to match the blue of the Greek flag.

    In 1935 Henri Matisse was commissioned to illustrate an edition of Ulysses for subscribers to the Limited Edition Club in America.  Each of the 1,000 copies was signed by Matisse and 250 were also signed by Joyce.  A copy of the book signed by both men is estimated at £6,000-8,000.
    Other works include a first edition of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, (£20,000-30,000); a first edition of Dubliners,  (£3,000-4,000) and a first edition of the very scarce Gas from a Burner (£10,000-15,000) his bitingly satirical poem written in September 1912 about the destruction of 1,000 copies of Dubliners.   A signed copy of the first 1936 English printing of Ulysses, with the cover designed by Eric Gill, is estimated at £10,000-15,000.

    The 220 lot Art and Literature online book auction at Morgan O’Driscoll runs until June 8 at 6.30 p.m.  It features rarities like John Lavery and his work by Walter Shaw Sparrow, published in 1912 and estimated at 30-50 and Sean Scully at Galerie Lelong Paris 1997 (eleven colour plates)(30-50), Jack B. Yeats, His Watercolours, Drawing and Pastels by Hilary Pyle 1993 (50-70) and a signed limited edition of The Burial at Thebes by Seamus Heaney (500-700).  An 1839 edition of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens is estimated  at 1,200-1,800 and a 1902 edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle is estimated at  800-1,200.  The catalogue is online.

    FIRST EDITION OF THE HOBBIT MAKES NEW WORLD RECORD

    A first edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from 1937 sold for a new world record price of £137,000 at Sotheby’s in London today.  This more than doubled the pre-sale estimate of £50,000-70,000.

    Presented as a gift from the author to one of his first students at Leeds University in the 1920s, Miss Katherine (“Kitty”) Kilbride, it is inscribed with a handwritten note from the author in Elvish. The author continued to send letters, cards and books to her throughout his life.

    The presentation copy inscribed by the author as follows: “K.M. Kilbride, with greeting from J.R.R. Tolkien” and four lines in Elvish.  The Hobbit was first published in London by George Allen and Unwin Ltd. in 1937.  The previous world record for a first edition of the story was £50,000 set in 2008.

    FROM CROKE PARK TO LADY DI AT WHYTE’S ECLECTIC COLLECTOR SALE

    FROM Croke Park to Lady Di, Irish rugby to The Beatles, Whyte’s Eclectic Collector sale in Dublin on June 13 holds plenty of interest.  Rare Irish sporting medals, a collection of 5,000 postcards in 144 lots, three Princess Diana dolls by master maker Paul Crees, film and pop memorabilia including mementoes of The Beatles and the Rolling Stones make a wide ranging mix.  There are 531 lots on the catalogue.  The first 144 are postcards from a collection formed by Dublin based film producer and director Peter Holder.  He began it for the purpose of illustrating period scenes in Ireland for film productions.  Examples from Ancient Rome, Britain and America are among 100 lots of coins.  There are three Princess Diana dolls by Paul Crees with estimates from 1,000-2,500. Lot 368 is a medal presented to a member of Pierce O’Mahony’s club from Navan for the 1895 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship played on March 15, 1896.  It was the first final to be played in Jones’ Road, later Croke Park. The medal, together with a Leinster Football Championship 1895 medal is estimated at 5,000-7,000.  There is a collection of autographs spanning the past 70 years of Irish rugby and 65 lots of Rock, Pop and Cinema memorabilia.  The catalogue is online.     UPDATE: The sale grossed €220,000, with 80% of lots sold. 400 bidders registered on line from North America, Europe, Australia, China, Japan, UAE and Qatar. Most of the lots sold in the room, which included dealers and collectors from Ireland, UK and USA.
