One of the more collectible lot at Dolan’s August auction in Clifden is a century old album of mounted photographs relating to the manufacture of armaments for World War 1.   The on trend lot of 47 photographs depicts the manufacture of a 54 ton trolley for a rail gun at Gateshead Works.

Dated September 13, 1914 the photos cover the entire manufacturing process which got underway almost exactly a century ago on September 1, 1914.  The Great War officially started on June 28 1914 with the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austria Hungary throne.  This album shows the building of the rail gun wagon at Gateshead just over two months later.  It shows the different crews employed and the finished carriage with canon and is estimated at 1,000-1,500. Silver, furniture, paintings, books and affordable Irish art will all come under the hammer at this two day auction in Connemara on August 4 and 5. Furniture, art and collectibles – including the World War album – will be offered on August Monday, with Irish art, rugs and outdoor effects on the following day. Both sales get underway at 12.30 p.m.  Included in the sale will be paintings and furniture from the collection of artist Kenneth Webb.

An intimate nude by Edgar Degas is among the lots at Tajan’s summer sales in Monte Carlo on July 28, 29 and 30.  The sales feature important jewellery, watches, modern and contemporary art and design.  This Degas nude, set in a landscape, is uncommon in the  work of an artist who generally favoured views from behind and nudes painted in interiors. The work bears the studio stamp applied on the artist’s death in anticipation of the eight sales staged in 1918 and 1919. It then appeared in the collections of Sam Salz, a keen admirer of Impressionist works. It dates to 1880 and will be offered for sale on July 28 estimated at 350,000-500,000.

One of the more unusual design lots is Barberini and Gunnel’s chained up dining set from 2014 in steel.  It is estimated at 25,000-35,000.

XU BING AT CHATSWORTH IN THE AUTUMN

    Tuesday, July 22nd, 2014
Artist Xu Bing at work at Chatsworth.

Artist Xu Bing at work at Chatsworth.

An installation entitled Tao Hua Yuan: A Lost Village Utopia  by Xu Bing – one of China’s best known and critically acclaimed artists – is to be unveiled at Chatsworth for the ninth annual Beyond Limits monumental sculpture exhibition this year.  The multi-media work incorporates both natural and man-made elements in the form of natural rock formations, ceramics, exotic plants in addition to mist effects. Organisers Sotheby’s describe it as one of the most impressive installations to date by Xu Bing.  It will be seen at the opening of this year’s exhibition on September 8 in and around the Seahorse fountain, a circular pond on the historic South lawn in the Chatsworth Garden.  This location is usually off limits. The Seahorse fountain is undergoing restoration.

The dream-like landscape of Tao Hua Yuan: A Lost Village Utopia was inspired by the classic Chinese fable “Tao Hua Yuan” (“Peach Blossom Spring”) written by the scholar Tao Qian in AD421, about a chance discovery of an ethereal utopia where people live in harmony with nature.  To reproduce Tao Qian’s utopia, Xu Bing has created hundreds of ceramic objects and collected mountain rocks from five different regions in China to reflect the specific characteristics of their regional identities.  The full extent of the sculpture, arranged concentrically around the pond, will be revealed at the opening of this year’s Beyond Limits.  This three-dimensional installation has been designed to bring Chinese ink painting to life.  As the visitors walk around the elements of the installation, the mountains, trees, figures, houses and reflections on the pool coalesce into new tableaux vivant, enabling the viewer to experience Chinese ink painting in a three-dimensional sensory experience.
