    • ASIAN ART AT SHEPPARDS IN SEPTEMBER

    The Asian Art section at Sheppards three day sale at Durrow, Co. Laois in September will have its own fully illustrated catalogue. This is the first ever such publication for an Irish auction house.  The third day of The Legacy of the Big House sale on September 29 will be devoted to Asian Art and will feature 453 lots out of total 1853 lots for auction.

    In May Sheppard’s broke the Irish record set by them for a Chinese object of art when they sold a pair of bottle-shaped vases from the Daoguang period for €200,770.  The three day sale runs from September 27-29.

    LOTS TO COVET AT DUBLIN HOUSE CONTENTS AUCTION

    There is plenty to covet at a de Veres house contents auction at Westbury, Willowbank, Monkstown, Co. Dublin on September 19 at 2 p.m.  It was for many years the private residence of retired Dublin solicitor Noel Purcell, an avid collector.  Viewing is at the house, the auction will be held at the Presbyterian Hall at York Road, Dun Laoghaire.     A large Regency convex mirror, early 19th century, is estimated at 4,000-6,000. UPDATE: THIS WAS UNSOLD.

    A Meissen Group of Count Bruhl's tailor riding on a goat c1880. Count Bruhl (1700-1763) was prime minister of Saxony and director of the Meissen Porcelain factory. It is estimated at 2,000-3,000. UPDATE: THIS MADE 5,500 AT HAMMER.

    IRISH SINGER’S ASTON MARTIN TO BE SOLD BY BONHAMS

    Shane Filan's Aston Martin to be sold by Bonhams. UPDATE: IT SOLD FOR £348,000 INCLUSIVE OF BUYER'S PREMIUM.

    A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 4.2 Litre Sports Saloon owned by Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife will be offered by Bonhams at the Goodwood Revival on September 16.    The car was Filan’s 30th birthday present to himself, but as he will be touring for the next year or so he has decided to sell it.  The DB5 was found in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by marque specialist Desmond J Smail.  It has since been fully restored.

    Works undertaken include a full body-off rebuild: powder coating the chassis; new doorframes and outer skins; and re-bodying in places with new steel where required, the roof and boot being retained. Recognised specialist Bodylines carried out the bodywork restoration, while repainting in Silver Birch was entrusted to specialist Lone Pine Garage. The Aston was returned to DJS for completion, which included a full engine rebuild to 4.2 litres capacity using Cosworth pistons; overhaul of the gearbox and rear axle; reconditioned brake servos and callipers; all gauges overhauled; dashboard repainted; and a full interior re-trim in black leather with matching Wilton carpets. Parts renewed include the wheels, tyres, brakes discs, Cooper nickel pipes, suspension, wiring loom, roof lining, brightwork and exhaust system (now stainless steel). In addition, the car was fitted with air conditioning and a modern Sony stereo system. Only 400-or-so miles have been covered since.
    The car is expected to fetch £250,000-300,000.

    WARHOL’S MAO, REMBRANDT’S FAUST AT SOTHEBY’S

    Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints will come under the hammer at Sotheby’s in London on September 27. There are rare-to-market works in a variety of categories. Works by Dürer and Rembrandt highlight the Old Masters section. There are Modern and Contemporary works by Miró, Degas, Picasso and Warhol among others.  The sale of 181 lots is expected to realise between £1,500,000 – 2,300,000.  UPDATE:  The sale of Old Master, Modern & Contemporary Prints brought a total of £1,704,988 against a pre-sale estimate of £1,478,800-2,145,700. It was 78.5% sold by lot and 82.5% sold by amount.  The top lot was a Rembrandt self portrait  at the window which made £106,850.

    CHINESE AND JAPANESE LOTS IN BANDON SALE

    Around 300 lots including Chinese and Japanese porcelain, ivory and objets d’art will be sold at Hegarty’s in Bandon on Sunday September 4 at 4 p.m.  The sale features part two of the collection of the late
    Georgette Ellison, whose husband was a high ranking US military member stationed overseas post World War II.  The main lot at part one of the sale last July 24 was a Japanese smoker’s companion set presented to Mrs. Ellison by the late Emperor Hirohito. It was bought on the internet by a collector from Hong Kong for 3,800.
    The sale features  Victorian and Georgian furniture, English and Irish silver, an Irish Georgian plate bucket and a Cork longcase clock.

    WARHOL’S SCREAMS AND REMBRANDT’S PUPPY AT CHRISTIE’S

    Never before published prints by Andy Warhol, based on Edward Munch’s The Scream, feature at Christie’s sale of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary prints in London on September 21.  The two prints dating from 1984 exist only in unique colour variants.  There are prints by artists from Dürer to Rembrandt and Warhol to Richter.  Estimates range from £1,000 to £180,000. The sale is expected to realise more than £3 million.
    On September 20 at South Kensington Christie’s will offer Old Master, Modern and Contemporary prints including property from the estate of Ernst Beyeler. British printmaking is strong in this 300 lot sale.  There are examples by Richard Hamilton, Ben Nicholson, Peter Blake, Sybil Andrews and Lucian Freud and estimates are from £500 to £25,000.

    TIPU SULTAN’S GOLD PENDANT WITH 38 CARAT EMERALD

    The Tipu Sultan gold pendant set with a 38 carat emerald surrounded by nine precious stones including topaz, blue sapphire, ruby, diamond and pearl will be offered by Bonhams in London on September 28.  Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore who challenged British rule in India, was killed in a battle in 1799.  This is one of the very few pieces of jewellery from his treasury to survive in the original setting.

    Estimated at £80,000-£120,000 it is from the collection of the late Lord Glenconner in St. Lucia.  The sale contains presents from the late Princess Margaret to Colin Tennant, Lord Glenconner. Among them is a silver snuffbox engraved with an image of The Glen, the Glenconner family home in Scotland (estimate £1,000-1,500) and a pair of double-sided cufflinks in green chalcedony spheres (£1,000-£1,500).  The sale includes Caribbean and Anglo Indian furniture, Islamic and Indian art, Chinese ceramics, silver, works of art, jewellery and pictures.

    WHEN an antique collector’s collection comes to the market it is always of interest.  The Adams sale of the Jill Cox Collection in Dublin on September 7 is a treasury for the collector of Irish glass, silver, delft, rare prints and art. Jill Cox, who died last December, was proprietor of The Beaufield Mews, a restaurant and antiques shop in south County Dublin.  She was interested in everything Irish, especially glass and silver, and was chairperson of the Irish Glass Society.
    More than 800 lots, including an evening sale of Irish art, will come under the hammer at James Adam, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin on September 7. This is a small selection:
