    JOHN KINGERLEE STUDIO SALE BY MORGAN O’DRISCOLL IN CORK

    'Grid Studies' is the title of this work by John Kingerlee. It is estimated at 2,000-4,000. UPDATE: THIS MADE 550 AT HAMMER.

    'Sea Shore, Kilcatherine' by John Kingerlee is estimated at 2,500-4,000. UPDATE: THIS MADE 950 AT HAMMER.

    A retrospective no reserve sale from the studio of artist John Kingerlee is to be held by auctioneer Morgan O’Driscoll in Cork on September 18 next.  The Birmingham born (in 1936) artist has been a long term resident of the Beara Peninsula in west Cork.  The sale will cover the period from 1969 to 2010.  Estimates range from 300 to 20,000.
    Morgan O’Driscoll has held several successful no reserve art sales this year.  Public interest has been high and many works sold for under the low estimate. Kingerlee has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally.  He applies layers of pigment to form a thick strata of paint akin to the rocky landscape outside his studio window.  The sale, which features 136 works, is to be held at the CIT Wandesforde Quay Gallery in Cork city centre on September 18 at 4 p.m.

    SILVER FROM WELDON’S AT HIBERNIAN ANTIQUES’ KINSALE FAIR

    These silver pieces will be at Weldon’s stand when Hibernian Antique Fairs visit Acton’s Hotel in Kinsale on Sunday, August 28.   The Irish silver dish ring was made in Dublin in 1939 by Weirs. Dish rings were designed for hot plates, and were the forerunner of the table mat.  In Ireland they are sometimes called potato rings.  When a liner was added, as in this example, they were used for serving potatoes.
    The set of nine dessert spoons are by the Cork maker John Toleken whose workshop was at Grand Parade. He was registered with the Goldsmiths’ Company of Dublin in 1798 and is thought to have been working in the trade as late as 1836.  These dessert spoons are asking 1,250 euro.

    GOETHE’S TORCHLIT VISIT TO VATICAN MUSEUM INSPIRES LISMORE SHOW

    GOETHE’S torchlit visit to the Vatican Museum in 1787 is the inspiration for an exhibition of 18 German artists in Ireland. Goethe became excited by the possibility of focusing on single art objects, visually removed from other objects.  Herbei ein Licht!, an exhibition at St. Carthage Hall, Lismore, Co. Waterford offers visitors a similar experience. This group show of works relating to Goethe’s Faust by leading contemporary German artists is installed in a completely dark room.  Visitors are provided with a single candle and invited to navigate the darkened space to find their own path through the exhibition.

    Many of the artists are exhibiting in Ireland for the first time.  Those taking part are Matti Isan Blind, John Bock, Matthias Dornfeld, Ingeborg Gabriel, Thomas Helbig, Gregor Hildebrandt, Andy Hope 1930, Alicja Kwade, Thomas Kiesewetter, Adrian Lohmüller, Cornelius Quabeck, Bernd Ribbeck, Gitte Schäfer, Cornelia Schmidt-Bleek, Markus Selg, Klaus Weber, Claudia Wieser and Thomas Zipp.   Claudia Weiser’s large-scale wall work, and an intermittent soundtrack provided by Markus Selg, are site specific works.
    The exhibition, organised by Lismore Castle Arts, runs from August 20 to October 2. It is open to one viewer at a time on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    RICHARD GERE’S GUITAR COLLECTION AT CHRISTIE’S

    THE actor Richard Gere’s guitar collection comes up for auction at Christie’s in New York on October 11.  Included are vintage American guitars from the marquee names of C.F. Martin, Gibson, Fender, Gretsch and Epiphone, and a selection of amplifiers, as well as iconic guitars that belonged to Albert King, Peter Tosh and James D’Aquisto.  Around 110 lots are expected to realise $1 million.
    Born in 1949 Richard Gere, who has starred in over 40 films, is an accomplished musician.  He studied trumpet and is a self-taught pianist and guitarist. His best-known films include An Officer and a Gentleman, Days of Heaven, American Gigolo, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Pretty Woman, Primal Fear, Unfaithful, and Chicago, for which he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. He played in the films Cotton Club and Pretty Woman.  His personal collection of American vintage guitars is based upon their playability and craftsmanship.
    ” Although it’s more than a little painful to let them go, each one has been played, loved and appreciated- and will be again” he said. “All my proceeds from this sale will go to support humanitarian causes around the world.”
    UPDATE: THE collection sold for near $1 million dollars.  The top lot was a 1960 sold-body Les Paul electric guitar by Gibson, which made $98,000.

    LARGEST COUNTRY HOUSE SALE OF THE YEAR IN UK

    THE largest country house sale of the year will present about 1,200 lots from both Cowdray Park, home of Lord Cowdray (above right), and from Dunecht House, the Scottish home of Lord Cowdray’s brother, the Hon. Charles Pearson (above left).  The Christie’s sale is expected to realise about £5 million and estimates range from £50 to £500,000.

    The sale takes place at Cowdray Park in west Sussex over three days from September 13-15.

    Andrew Waters, Head of Private Collection and Country House Sales, Christie’s said: “Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray and his wife Annie, Lady Cowdray were among the most prolific and discerning British collectors of the early 20th century, coupling their considerable wealth with a taste for beautiful pictures, objects and works of art”.

    Many of the works were acquired by Weetman Dickinson Pearson (1856-1927) and his son, Weetman Harold Miller Pearson. Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray, developed his family firm, S. Pearson and Son Ltd., from a small company in Bradford into one of the most successful business empires of the 20th century. In 1889 he won the contract to drain Mexico City by means of a Grand Canal and, having gained the friendship of President Porfirio Diàz, Pearson developed vast oil fields in Mexico. He was for ten years Liberal MP for Colchester. Due to regular absences he was often referred to as ‘the Member for Mexico’. When he died in 1927 an American newspaper described him as ‘one of the greatest pioneers ever sent out of Britain. Pearson PLC exists today as a global media and education company and the largest book publisher in the world.

    NEW WORK BY DAVID QUINN AT TAYLOR GALLERIES

    AN exhibition of new work by the Irish artist David Quinn runs at the Taylor Galleries, Kildare St., Dublin from August 18 to September 3.  The work in this show – which is entitled Murmur – represents a kind of visual diary of the painter’s past year.
    David Quinn has exhibited in Ireland and abroad since 1995. He received a fellowship at Ballinglen Arts Foundation and completed residencies at Roundstone Arts Week and at Mountjoy Prison as part of the Arts Council’s Artists in Prisons Scheme.  His work is in the collections of Bank of Ireland, ESB, the OPW, PJ Carroll & Co. and AIB Corporate Banking

    TIM GOULDING’S CLOUDS AT GLENGARRIFF GALLERY

    THE artist Tim Goulding is at the Catherine Hammond Gallery in Glengarriff in west Cork until September 12. The show is entitled Clouds and features work from 2010 and 2011.  The artist is quoted saying:  “Most of us construct clouds, be they confusions or castles in the air. The sky has adamantly no opinion of these.”

    Born in Dublin in 1945 Tim Goulding has lived and worked on the Beara Peninsula in west Cork since 1969. He is a member of Aosdana, the group established by the Irish Arts Council to honour artists whose work has made an outstanding contribution to the arts in Ireland.

    TRAGIC VISION OF EXPRESSIONIST SCHWARZ-ABRYS AT LIMERICK AUCTION

    ‘ Holocaust’ by Leon Schwarz-Abrys 1905-1990 at Limerick Auction Rooms.  UPDATE: This sold for 2,000 at hammer.

    This work by the Hungarian born French based artist Leon Schwarz-Abrys (1905-1990) entitled Holocaust is lot number 183 at the Limerick Auction Rooms sale on Sunday, August 14.  It is unusual for a work by this artist to turn up in Ireland.

    The Expressionist painter and writer , who took part in the Salon des Independents in Paris in 1939, is collected in France and in America.  His life was saved by virtue of the fact that he  was interned at the Psychiatric Hospital of Saint Anne in the Second World War.  He had a studio in Montmarte at 11 rue Nicolet.  His vision, as in this ruined landscape, is often tragic.  He painted many portraits of mentally ill patients.

    Holocaust, an oil on board, is estimated at 2,000-3,000.  The sale features 405 lots including furniture, art and collectibles.
