THIS set of Cork six bar chairs comes up at Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on April 26. The eight chairs are similar to a set sold from the Dunkathel House Collection some years ago. Cork eleven bar chairs are prized by collectors, as are nine bar chairs. Six bar chairs are rarer and they tend to be earlier. This set is estimated at 1,200-1,500. MATTHEWS AUCTION AT HEADFORT HOUSE, KELLS

More than 500 lots will come under the hammer at Matthews sale at Headfort House, Kells, Co. Meath on April 13. Among the more unusual lots is an antique marble bust of August FitzClarence, the illegitimate son of the Duke of Clarence, later King William IV, and his Irish mistress Dorothea Jordan by Thomas Sharp and a marquetry jewellery box stamped Tahan, who was master cabinet maker to Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie. A PORTRAIT OF 16th CENTURY QUEEN OF SPAIN IN WATERFORD

A portrait of a 16th century Queen of Spain comes up at auction in Waterford on April 7. Anna of Austria, Queen of Spain (1549-1580) is at R.J. Keighery’s sale in Waterford. The Queen is depicted in a heavily embroidered dress with lace collar. The portrait is attributed to the Portuguese artist Alonso Sanchez Coello (1531-1588), a pioneer of Spanish portrait painting, and is estimated at 10,000-15,000.

It was purchased at the estate sale at Mount Loftus, Powerscourt, Co. Kilkenny in 1965. It is lot number 903 in a sale of 959 lots which includes antique furniture, jewellery and collectibles.

UPDATE: The work was withdrawn at 7,000 and remained unsold.

INTEREST PERKS UP AT ANTIQUES AND INTERIORS FAIR AT THE RDS

Despite a prevailing economic gloom in many parts of Ireland interest was definitely on the up at the antiques and interiors fair at the RDS. Outside the capital people are prone to remark that while the recession may be over in Dublin it is still jobless and cashless around here. These impressions are gleaned from a much reported improvement in property prices in certain parts of the city, fuelled by a strong pent up demand and an acute shortage of supply. At the antiques and interiors fair now in full swing at the RDS where well heeled buyers are in evidence in some number, one dealer concurred with the impression that, in Dublin at least, the recession over. There is plenty to drool over and the fair runs until March 23. Here is a minute selection showing some rather special antique furniture and a large Chinese screen:

TWO DAYS OF SALES AT MEALY’S, CASTLECOMER

The two day Irish Estates and Private Collections sale at Mealy’s in Castlecomer on March 25-26 offers more than 1,250 lots of silver, plate, book bindings, ceramics, Chinese and Japanese art, Georgian, Victorian and 20th century furniture and art. UPDATE: The auction realized around 400,000, with 75% of lots sold. Many items sold above their high estimates and the atmosphere at this sale was the best seen since 2007. More than 800 bidders registered by phone and by internet and the salesroom was crowded.

DROVES OF BUYERS TURN UP FOR MARCILHAC SALE

This unique patinated gypsum and bronze cabinet, circa 1935 by Jean-Michel Frank made 3,681,500.

Droves of buyers descended on Sotheby’s in Paris for the first of two days of sales of the collection of French Art Deco dealer and collector Félix Marcilhac. Day one realised a combined total of 14,745,725, more than double the high pre-sale estimate. The auction followed a nine day exhibition visited by over 5,000 people and more than 97% of lots were sold. Nearly 500 collectors registered their intention to bid on masterpieces of Decorative Art. Among the great collectors taking part in this evening’s sale was Dimitri Mavrommatis who bought five lots, including works by Dunand & Lambert-Rucki, Coard, Dominique and a superb pair of upholstered, shagreen and oak armchairs by Frank. The top lot was a patinated gypsum and bronze c1935 cabinet by Jean-Michel Frank which made 3,681.500 over a top estimate of 600,000. There were 11 auction records.

UPDATE: THE sale concluded with a total of 24,727,715, well ahead of the top estimate of 15.5 million. More than 95 per cent of lots were sold in an auction which achieved a record for a sale of decorative arts at Sotheby’s. Assembled over 40 years, this landmark collection featured Art Deco treasures which had not been seen in public for decades. Many of these pieces boasted prestigious provenance, having belonged to the likes of Jacques Doucet, Marie-Laure de Noailles, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jeanne Lanvin, Paul Cocteau and Jean-Michel Frank, whose c1935 cabinet was the top lot.
