    IRISH LOTS AT STYLISH BONHAMS AUCTION

    A number of Irish lots feature at the sale of contents of The Old Rectory in Kent at Bonhams in London on March 12. They are from the collection of architect, interior decorator and garden designer Giles Newby Vincent, whose Belgravia based company Giles Vincent Design numbers Elton John and Lord Heseltine among its clients. The outstanding private collection of carefully selected pieces ranges from fine early 18th century furniture, painting and silver to Delftware and antique textiles. Among the Irish pieces are a George III silver table, a chairback settee of similar vintage, an 18th century bog oak kettle stand and a George II Irish silver mug by Thomas Sutton, Dublin 1727.

    The collection is to be sold to fund Giles’s latest project – refurbishing a dilapidated old villa in the South of France overlooking the sea near Saint Tropez. He comments; “Although I love many of these pieces – it has been a labour of love to assemble them – it is time for a new chapter.  I hope they will now find new owners who will appreciate them as much as I have.” The Old Rectory near Canterbury will be offered for sale in spring 2014.

    18TH CENTURY SUNDIAL AT LYNES AUCTION

    A 18th century brass sundial at Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on February 15 was made by Daniel Voster, one of the earliest known instrument makers in Ireland.  This rare piece is dated Corke 1752.  A slide rule by Voster dated 1742 is in the collection of the Science Museum in London. The sundial is estimated at 400-600.   The sale features antique furniture and collectibles. Here is a small selection.  The catalogue is online.

    KILLARNEY WOOD TABLE AT WOODWARDS

    A c1890 Killarney occasional table is comes up at Woodwards in Cork on February 12 at 6 p.m. The circular tip top table is classically inlaid with five harp motifs and shamrocks with four panels of floral inlay and it is estimated at 4,000-6,000. Also on offer is a pair of William IV card tables (3,000-4,000), a set of ten spoon back dining chairs (3,000-4,000), a mahogany teapoy (600-800), a Gainsborough style Georgian armchair (800-1,200), a Carlton House desk (1,000-1,400), a Georgian Chippendale style table and eight chairs (2,000-3,000) and  a satinwood bureau bookcase (1,000-1,500).   There is an autograph album from the Hare Park internment camp at the Curragh, stamp albums, silver, and porcelain.  Artists featured include Arthur Maderson, Victor Richardson, James Flack, Sean McCarthy, Majella O’Neill-Collins and Tim Goulding.

    GLOBAL SALES OF £4.5 BILLION MAKE IT A RECORD YEAR FOR CHRISTIE’S

    IT was a record 2013 for Christie’s, which today announced global sales of £4.5 billion pounds in the year to December.  This is the highest sales total for any auction house in the history of the art market.  Sales were driven by an increase in new buyers, growth markets such as China and the internet. A total of 30% of buyers in 2013 were new and they accounted for 22% of sales.  Sales in Asia were up by 44%.

    Nine of the top ten lots sold were works of art headed by Francis Bacon’s  Three Studies of Lucian Freud.  This became the most valuable painting ever sold at auction last November when it made $142.4 million in New York.  The other lots in the top ten, in order, were artworks by Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jean Michel Basquiat, Mark Rothko, Amadeo Modigliani and Edward Hopper. At number 10 was a Pink Golconda diamond which sold for $39.2 million.

    This unique Commode a l’Anglaise dates to 1921.  It is among the Art Deco masterpieces from the private collection of the great French art dealer Félix Marcilhac which will come under the hammer at Sotheby’s, Paris on March 11 and 12.  The collection of over 300 lots was assembled over 40 years.  The provenance is highly prestigious and includes names like Jacques Doucet, Marie-Laure de Noailles, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jeanne Lanvin and Paul Cocteau. The commode, of black and polychrome lacquer with birds eye maple interior by Jean Dunand and Jean Goulden is signed by both artists.  It is estimated at 300,000-400,000.

    Félix Marcilhac contributed to rediscover the oeuvre of major 20th century French art designers and sculptors. Highlights include furniture, sculpture, glass, ceramics and orientalist works by illustrious names such as Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Dunand, Marcel Coard, André Groult, Pierre Legrain, Joseph Csaky, Gustave Miklos and Jacques Majorelle.  Marcilhad counts among the world’s top dealers in the field of 20th century Decorative Arts.  He has devoted much of his activity to writing and research and his monographs have contributed to many rediscoveries.  He opened his gallery at 8 rue Bonaparte in Paris in 1969.  It is now run by his son.

    New for 2014 at Dolan’s opening sale of the year at Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on Sunday, January 19 is a selection of antique pieces alongside art.  The catalogue cover features a circular bronze sculpture by John Coll of Patrick Kavanagh On Pembroke Road.  It measures 14 inches in diameter and is estimated at 1,500-2,000.  Other sculpture includes Birds in Flight by John Behan dating to 1985 (2,000-4,000) and Windswept by Joe Crean (250-350).  The auction of 240 lots offers a good selection of affordable Irish art by well known and emerging artists.  Antique pieces include a library table, sofa table, a Viennese clock, a selection of silver, an Irish 18th century oak stool and a German dog handlers medal from World War II as well as a Third Reich Eagle tunic breast badge.
