    Christmas sale in Castlecomer on December 3.  Paintings, furniture, silver, jewelery, vintage wine, porcelain, glass and Oriental art all feature.

    The freedom box, estimated at 10,000-15,000, dates to around 1740 and was made by Joseph Johns.  The 18th century Austrian tables are estimated at £8,000-15,000.  Here is a small selection.

    AMAZING GILTWOOD ARMCHAIRS FROM MAYO AND DUBLIN AT SOTHEBY’S

    Amazing George III giltwood armchairs by William Gomm and bird pictures by Samuel Dixon are among the lots with Irish provenance at Sotheby’s  Connoisseur’s Collection sale in London on December 4.  A pair of c1765 giltwood armchairs, estimated at £150,000-200,000, are, according to Sotheby’s, almost certainly part of a suite of furniture  commissioned by Francis and Elizabeth Palmer of Castle Lacken, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo or his nephew Sir Roger Palmer, 1stBt of Castle Lacken, Ballycastle, Co.Mayo and later Kenure Park, Co. Dublin, Ireland.  A third ensuite chair to be sold separately has similar provenance and is estimated at £50,000-80,000.
    A set of ten c1750 George II embossed bird pictures attributed to Samuel Dixon is estimated at £40,000-60,000.  They are one of a number of pictures by Samuel Dixon in the sale. Dixon was based at Capel St. in Dublin where he produced  embossed papier-mâché pictures of birds and flowers sold in black and gold japanned frames.

    DELFTWARE FROM LAMBAY ESTATE AND IRISH FURNITURE AT SOTHEBY’S

    A number of lots of Delftware from the Revelstoke collection sold by order of the Lambay Estate feature in Sotheby’s Arts of Europe sale in London on December 3.  Between 1912 and 1934 the banker Cecil Baring, 3rd Lord Revelstoke, assembled a collection of delftware, slipware, Pratt ware and saltglaze stoneware.  The lots of offer are from the Lambay Island home that Sir Edward Lutyens created for the Barings in what is considered his masterpiece of romantic castle architecture.  At Lambay Baring and his wife Maude Lorillard displayed their rare pottery against whitewashed walls or scrubbed oak furniture, creating a late Arts and Crafts look. In 1934 a large part of the collection was sold by the 4th Lord Revelstoke at Puttick and Simpson in London.  Some pieces went to museums like the Ashmolean in Oxford and the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.  The sale will also feature some Irish furniture and silver.

    HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT 1574 BIBLE AT SHEPPARDS

    An historically significant Geneva bible published in London in 1574 is among the highly collectible lots at Sheppards three day sale in Durrow, Co. Laois on November 26, 27 and 28.  This is the version used by Shakespeare, John Knox and John Donne.  It precedes the King James translation by 51 years. In 1620 it was one of the bibles taken to America by the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower. This one, published by Christopher Barker in hardcover, is estimated at 2,000-3,000.  It contains an inscription from August 1945 by the Rector of Bansha, Co. Tipperary noting the dropping of the atomic bombs and recording that: “All everywhere are shocked and bewildered as to its effectiveness”.

    The focus on November 26 and 27 is on antique furniture, fine, decorative and applied art.  On Thursday, November 28 there is Oriental art and Chinese ceramics, fine and rare wines.  Here is a small selection. The catalogue is online.

    IRISH GEORGE II TABLE SELLS FOR £185,000 AT DREWATTS

    A beautiful George II Irish mahogany side table sold for a hammer price of £185,000 at Drewatts Donnington Priory salerooms near Newbury in Berkshire today.  Estimated at just £8,000-12,000 the table is entirely original and is a very fine example of a top quality circa 1750 Irish piece.  It is understood that the table was bought by the Irish antique trade and that it will come back to Ireland.

    The rectangular top has a gadrooned edge above a profusely carved and pierced frieze centred by a lion mask flanked by swags of oak branches and flowerheads. The side friezes are centred by a carved shell, a swag beneath, on cabriole legs with acanthus carved terminals, on stylised lion paw feet.  It came from Townley Hall in Co. Louth built in 1799 for the Townley Balfour family. It is  regarded as a masterpiece in the classical style of Francis Johnston, the foremost Irish architect of his day.
    The poet laureate Sir John Betjeman, in a survey of the work of Francis Johnson wrote: ‘I have seen many Irish houses, but I know none at once so dignified, so restrained and so original as Francis Johnston’s Townley Hall’ .

    IRISH GILTWOOD PIER TABLE SELLS FOR 90,000

    This c1740 George II Irish carved giltwood and gesso rectangular pier table sold for a hammer price of 90,000 at the James Adam Country House Collections auction at Slane Castle on Monday.  This one has a later breccia marble top above a frieze with tongue and dart border, ribbon tied knots and a lion mask.

    An illustration of one of a pair of very similar tables, also c1740, is contained in Glin and Piell’s Irish Furniture published by Yale University Press. That pair, which is slightly smaller than this table, was supplied to Malahide Castle.
    The only recorded Irish view by Joseph Mallord William Turner - Clontarf Castle in Co. Dublin - is estimated at 20,000-40,000.
