VAN GOGH DRAWINGS TO BE A TEFAF HIGHLIGHT IN 2013

    Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013

Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890), The Yellow House (The street), Arles 1888 Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation).

A loan exhibition of 15 masterpieces from the drawings collection at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will be a highlight at TEFAF Maastricht from March 15-24 next. This is a coup for The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) as the Van Gogh Museum rarely exhibits works from its collection of drawings because they are so fragile. The loan exhibition at TEFAF Paper, selected by Axel Rüger, Director of the Museum, and curator Marije Vellekoop, will include works from each important phase in Van Gogh’s artistic development. It will be arranged chronologically from Van Gogh’s first ambitious drawings in The Hague, when he focused on figures and landscapes, through his impressive landscape drawings in Nuenen, to his Paris watercolours. In Arles Van Gogh achieved the pinnacle of his drawn oeuvre with reed pen landscapes, in Saint-Rémy he produced colourful drawings of the institution’s gardens while his Auvers landscape drawings are akin to his paintings in style.
The European Fine Art Fair is renowned for its commitment to excellence, expertise and elegance. In 2013 it will again have an extraordinary array of art, antiques and design pieces for sale.

TURNER WATERCOLOUR A LAPADA FAIR HIGHLIGHT

    Friday, September 14th, 2012

Joseph Mallord William Turner R.A. (1775-1851) Cullaly Deedy, water-gate in the outer-rampart of Seringapatam, where Tippoo Sultaun resided during the siege. Pencil and watercolor inscribed with title on original mount. £380,000 Click on image to enlarge.

A Turner Indian watercolor is one of the highlights at the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair at Berkeley Square in London from September 19-23 next. He never visited India but Turner was regularly asked to make finished views of places he did not know. His work  on a series of views of Seringapatam and the famous siege of 1799 was unknown until recently. Three subjects were in the hands of the London dealers, Colnaghi, in 1948, attributed to William Daniell, and were bought in that year by Ray Livingston Murphy.

They were entered for sale at Christie’s in Murphy’s estate under that attribution in November 1985, withdrawn when the misattribution was realised, and resubmitted at Christie’s in  March 1986. They are: The Siege of Serigapatam (Tate, London); ‘Hoollay Deedy, or new Sally-port in the inner rampart of Seringapatam, where Tippoo Sultaun was killed, on 4th May 1799’ (Clark Institute, Williamstown, Mass.); and ‘Residence of the Mysore Rajah within the fort of Seringapatam, during the last three years of his confinement.’

The Cullaly Deedy watercolour has been exposed to sunlight; silver-fish have damaged the surface of the paint in places, and the inscribed border is stained. In other respects the sheet is in good condition, the overall impact of the subject is unimpaired. Rountree Fine Art will bring the work to the LAPADA where it is priced at £380,000.

COLLECTOR’S TREASURES AT LAPADA IN LONDON IN SEPTEMBER

    Friday, August 17th, 2012

FRANCIS BACON (Dublin 1909-1992 Madrid) Triptych inspired by Oresteia of Aeschylus, 1981 will be at Gildens Art Gallery.

The 1981 Bacon Triptych on the left was inspired by Oresteia of Aeschylus, a trilogy of Greek tragedies which concerns the end of the curse on the House of Atreus (King of Mycenae).  The first tragedy is Agamemnon, second is The Libation Bearers where the children of Agamemnon take their revenge. The final is The Eumenides (which also inspired a Triptych by Bacon) where the son of Agamemnon is tourmented by the patricide and matricide he just committed in the second act.  This original lithograph is hand signed in pencil by the artist.

The Bacon litho is one of a variety of collector’s treasures from the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair at Berkeley Square in London from September 19-23 next.   The Horati clock (below right) was inspired by a picture by Jacques Louis David painted in 1784 depicting the sacrificial oath taken by three Horati brothers, symbols of ancient Roman valour, before their father holding three swords to stand against the Curati. The base plaque depicts the aftermath of battle where only one of the brothers survives amidst his dying brothers and slain enemies.

‘NYC II’, acrylic on canvas by the Spanish artist Salvador Monto will be at Lucy B. Campbell Fine Art.

This museum-quality French Empire ormolu mantel clock depicting the “Oath of the Horati” c1805 after a painting by Jacques Louis David of 1784 will be shown by Richard Price Associates.
