The 48th annual Irish Antique Dealers Association (IADA) fair is at the RDS in Dublin from September 26 to September 29.  The fair gives IADA members a chance  to show their finest wares to a national and international audience.  In these recessionary times the emphasis is on quality as dealers believe that the very best pieces are the most likely to hold their value.

This year’s special guest is Mark Hill, known to viewers of The Antiques Roadshow and host of the  forthcoming BBC series Collectaholics. Mark will give a lecture on his favourite things – what he calls  fat lava – the West German ceramics of the 1960s & 1970s and will also be in conversation with IADA President George Stacpoole discussing antiques today, a fluctuating but stable market and the  never ending thrill of collecting.
The annual lecture series returns with subjects ranging from Dublin Castle’s interiors to early colour plate

photography and looking at the most famous Art Deco furniture designers.

IF YOU MUST GET SHIPWRECKED IT MIGHT AS WELL BE IN KINSALE

    Thursday, July 25th, 2013

IF you must get shipwrecked it might as well be in Kinsale.  Everyone survived a massive air sea rescue operation after the Dutch sail training vessel Astrid lost engine power and was washed onto rocks off Kinsale Co. Cork this week.  But the 30 tall ship survivors will no doubt testify that there are worse places to be rescued. They can forget the survivor blues by mingling with collectors at next Sunday’s big antiques fair at Acton’s Hotel for one thing.  Organised by Hibernian Antique Fairs it will bring dealers and collectors from all over Ireland to Kinsale.  There is plenty of everything, from antique furniture to Irish art and glass to vintage items as well as coins, stamps and banknotes, in all price ranges.  Here is a small selection, all from Weldons (click on any image to enlarge it).

This strength was reflected in the increased attendance and the presence of many important collectors. I would like to thank the exhibitors and our partners for the huge effort they put into making this an exceptional year, and look forward to 2014 to build on the current success. Lighthouse anyone?  An eight foot tall fully working model of a lighthouse is one of the more unusual pieces at the Masterpiece Fair in London from June 27 to July 3.  Apter-Fredericks, one of the founders of the fair, will exhibit the lighthouse in which each coloured piece is a separate piece of wood laid in a geometric pattern. It is part of a selection of 18th century English furniture.  Another highlight at the stand is an Eagle console table made by William Bradshaw.  He supplied a similar pair to Chevening, now the weekend residence of Home Secretary William Hague.

Brothers Harry and Guy Apter said:  “We are delighted to be part of the fourth, and what promises to be the best, Masterpiece Fair so far.   The Fair is a highlight of our year and has brought much needed style, elegance and excitement to the international art market.  The event draws people in from every age group and from countries across the world and is a delight to exhibit at.”

Purchased directly from the artist in 1983 Roy Lichtenstein’s Puzzle Portrait will be at Masterpiece which runs in London from June 27 to July 3. The prestigious fair is at the South Grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea.  The painting will be brought to the fair by  Washington D.C. based Geoffrey Diner Gallery. It is to be sold with two hand signed letters from the artist to the collector detailing the sale.

“The strength of the market for iconic masterpieces was clearly demonstrated in the New York auctions last week, when two works by Roy Lichtenstein, reached new heights and one achieved a world record for the artist at auction. The astounding prices reached for these works show the strong desire amongst collectors to acquire masterworks. Continuing from this, Masterpiece London is delighted that Geoffrey Diner Gallery has chosen our fair and London to unveil this fresh and rare work by Roy Lichtenstein’, Nazy Vassegh, CEO of Masterpiece London, commented.
UPDATE: At the conclusion of Masterpiece 2013, which saw 34,000 visitors including leading curators and collectors, the Geoffrey Diner Gallery was considering offers on the work.
