Strong sales and record crowds made for a vintage year at Maastricht in 2014. With collectors from more than 56 countries The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) showed a truly global market.  There were 74,000 visitors and a record 375 private jets at Maastricht-Aachen airport. Many dealers recorded sales to museums and institutions across the globe and many more talked of sales to new clients.

One of the highlights at the Fair, the rare foliate rim Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368) dish shown by Littleton & Hennessy Asian Art, London and New York  with an asking price of 15 million euros was sold a Chinese art collector.   Another major piece, Moulin de la Galette by Vincent van Gogh (1835-1890) was brought to the Fair by Dickinson, London with negotiations for sale at an advanced stage.  Galerie Odermatt-Vedovi sold a hanging mobile by Alexander Calder (1898-1976) entitled Black 2-2-6, 1965, which had an asking price of 2.6 million euros to a private European collector.  A magnificent soup tureen on stand bearing the makers mark of Jacques- Nicolas Roettiers, Paris 1770 was sold by Koopman Rare Art, London to a private buyer.  The piece had been given by Catherine II, Empress of Russia (1729-1796) to Count Orloff in 1772;   it was reacquired by Catherine II in 1784 and remained in the imperial collection until 1917.

The Antiques and Interiors Fair at the Main Hall of the RDS in Dublin from March 21-23 will offer a variety ranging from antique furniture to contemporary art and interiors.

This fair has evolved to cater for eclectic contemporary tastes.  Nowadays the trend is for collectors to mix and match and draw from a wide variety of sources.  The fair will fit into this aesthetic with a number of contemporary interiors galleries side by side with more traditional and established antiques dealers.

As usual there will be a selection of contemporary Irish art on offer from a number of different galleries. It promises to provide an interesting mix and a hunting ground for collectors of all sorts.

AN enormous Aladdin’s Cave of treasures has opened up in Maastricht where The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) gets underway today. With more than 35,000 works strictly vetted by 175 experts the fair is full of fabulous objects of astonishing quality.  Organisers say that TEFAF 2014 challenges assumptions that supply is drying up and that there are a very limited number of truly important objects left.  TEFAF runs until March 23.  Here is a minute selection:

LIMERICK, currently European Capital of Culture, is the place to be this weekend.  Not only is the weather set fair for St. Patrick’s Day – remarkable in Ireland – but the city is to be the venue for the two day National Antiques and Art Fair.  More than 100 dealers will be in attendance on March 15 and 16.  They will offer jewellery, furniture, art, silver, glass, porcelain, vintage pieces, banknotes and a huge array of collectible items. The venue is the South Court Hotel.  Here is a small flavour of what is in store for treasure hunters.
