This Regency dining table and set of Hicks dining chairs is among the highlights at the third annual Palace Collection sale by Victor Mee at the Bishops Palace, Kilmore, Co. Cavan on September 28, 29 and 30. Both the sale and the viewing will be live and online. Among the outstanding Georgian lots are an exceptional Irish fireplace fluted with Siena marble, an Irish Georgian giltwood mirror and an Irish Georgian longcase clock. A pair of brass bound turf buckets are similar to one at Powerscourt House. Among the lots of historic artwork is a pair of 18th century Flemish tapestries, an oil on canvas portrait of a nobleman by Franz Stampert (1675-1750) and an 18th century portrait of William of Orange. Rarities include an Oriental brass censer in the shape of a Ho Ho bird and there is a selection of Oriental bronzes.

Fine Greek, Latin, Italian, French, German and English volumes from 1515 to 1920 and important books on travel, botany and history are included in Fonsie Mealy’s live and online sale of the library at Howth Castle on September 22 and 23. next Wednesday and Thursday (Sep 22-23). Bibliophiles from around the world will connect to the sale with rarities incuding The Munster Farmers Magazine (1812-1816), the Botanical Magazine 1746-93 with more than 10,000 illustrated plates, log books of British warships, ecclesiastical history, Lutyens plans for Howth Castle and volumes covering a vast range of subjects. There is important original manuscript work and correspondence from Saint John Henry Newman, signed, presentation and annotated copies, together with periodicals in large runs. There is a collection of early books by George Berkeley, fine coloured plate books of botanical and travel interest, a good collection of 19th century English poetry, photographs and a collection of material, atlases, addresses and manuscripts, scrap albums of watercolours and prints and photograph albums relating to the Gaisford-St. Lawrence family and the local area of Howth Castle Estate.

The entire contents of the Howth Castle Library is generally in fine original condition and in fine bindings. Dean Thomas Gaisford in 1812, at the age of 32, was elected Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford University, a position he held for 43 years, until his death in 1855. He was Dean of Christ Church, Oxford from 1830 for 25 years. The St. Lawrence family came to Howth in 1177. Howth Castle is one of the longest continuously inhabited private homes in Europe.

With everything from Memoirs relating to European and Asiatic Turkey by Robert Walpole, London 1817 to an extraordinary 18th/19th century botanical survivor – the complete editions of Curtis’s Botanical Magazine with 10,700 plates – the Companion to the magazine and its successor Kew to a finely executed pencil drawing by John Ruskin of Oxford Cathedral Fonsie Mealy’s sale of the Library of Howth Castle on September 22 and 23 promises to be another humdinger. The sale of contents from the castle by Fonsie Mealy earlier this month realised over €2 million. In a note to the catalogue Julian Gaisford St. Lawrence notes that the large library at Howth and to adjacent book room were added to the house in 1910 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. He notes that the Earls of Howth owned books but were not scholars or academics, the distaff Gaisfords were serious collectors.

Sylvester Stallone’s boxing gloves from Rocky III are among the highlights at the live and online sale by Julien’s Auctions from the life and career of the award winning actor on December 5. His personal archive of original Rocky and Rambo items includes handwritten story development notebooks, boxing gloves, boots and film poster concept artworks. Other lots include a Gianni Versace designed costume from Judge Dredd and a knife necklace from The Expendables.
On offer is a spectacular array of costumes, movie props, and memorabilia spanning his Hollywood blockbuster oeuvre of his most iconic films, entirely from Sylvester Stallone’s personal collection–the Rocky and Rambo movie franchises, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, The Specialist, Assassins, Escape Plan, Cop Land, and The Expendables– as well as awards, fine jewellery, furniture, cigar accoutrement, and other gentlemen’s luxury items.

This Portrait of a Man in Armour, presented by Caretto & Occhinegro at TEFAF Online was acquired by Groeningemuseum, Belgium. Over the course of six days collectors and institutions, including some of the world’s most eminent museums gathered online to learn, discuss, and buy work at the top levels of the international market. Nicolaas Teeuwisse OHG sold Tabula Cebetis(c1550), by the Venetian School, to Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam. A Groeningemuseum, Belgium, acquired Caretto & Occhinegro’s Portrait of a Man in Armour (c1560), attributed to Gillis Claeissens. Scene in an Italian Country Inn, Possibly a Self-Portrait of the Artist with Her Husband on Their Wedding Trip (1821/25), by Hortense Haudebourt-Lescot, presented by Gallery 19C, was acquired by The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Among many other notable sales a leading Eastern European museum purchased Rococo-Écuelle with Présentoir and Spoon (1751-53) from Helga Matzke.

The evolution of 20th century design comes to the fore at a sale at Christie’s Paris on November 3. Around 300 lots from collection of Daniel Lebard, gathered with passion and erudition, will come under the hammer with an overall estimated of €13-€19 million. The core of this very private collection is the Modern Movement in the 1920’s and ’30’s to France in the 1950’s, ’60’s and ’70’s. The discovery of the work of Jean Prouvé was the foundation for future choices like Pierre Chareau, Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier. Daniel Lebard gradually added to their creations with work by ean Royère, Serge Mouille, Mathieu Matégot and Georges Jouve and opening up to the reference designers of the following decades: Pierre Paulin, Roger Tallon, Atelier A and André Borderie. An early Irish walnut tea or silver table, a Sheraton sideboard and an Irish Georgian longcase clock are among the prime lots at Lynes and Lynes online sale in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on September 18. Just over 400 lots will come under the hammer at an auction which Lynes and Lynes has been putting together since last April. The sale includes two executor house contents and lots collected from residences throughout Munster. There is an Irish Georgian mahogany and brass banded turf bucket ( €600-€1,000); an Irish Georgian mahogany tall boy (€1,000- €1,500); a gilded serpentine console table with marble top (€1,000-€1,500): an Irish Georgian secretaire bookcase (€2,000-€3,000); an Irish Georgian mahogany and satinwood corner cabinet (€1,000-€1,500); an Arts and Crafts oak side cabinet (€800-€1,200) and a large 19th century wardrobe with light and dark walnut panels (€1,000-€1,500).

Burdon, Dublin at €1,500-€2,000.There are collectibles including two stuffed pheasants cased by Rohu, Cork, an old metal Tri-ang pedal car, a Guinness Time outside wall clock and a large silver cup from the North Kildare Harriers Point to Point in 1925 There is silver and plate, mirrors, some garden furniture, porcelain and cloissonne ware and an Irish Connemara made drawing room rug (€300-€500) as well as some coins and books.
