Seas, Sherkin Island by Majella O’Neill Collins is among the lots at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online auction of affordable Irish art which runs until 6.30 pm on April 20. There is much to choose from in this sale with works by Nano Reid, Arthur Maderson, John Kingerlee, John Butler Yeats, William Crozier, Cecil King, Ciaran Lennon, Gladys McCabe, Barbara Warren and many more. The catalogue is online.
Morgan O’Driscoll, Aidan Foley and Damien Matthews will all hold online auctions today. The biggest of the sales is the Irish and International Art auction by Morgan O’Driscoll, who has some big ticket items on offer including Celtic Cross in a west of Ireland landscape by Paul Henry (€150,000-250,000), Whik Wood by Ivon Hitchens (€60,000-90,000), Landscape with Figures by George Barret (€60,000-90,000), Altar by Damien Hirst (€17,500-25,000), Roxboro Road Bus Stop V by John Shinnors (€15,000-20,000), Spring Bogland, Ballinaboy by Kenneth Webb (€10,000-15,000); Abstract Composition by William Scott (€6,000-9,000) and three pieces by Jeff Koons, one of the most expensive living artists in the world. They are Balloon Rabbit (Red), Balloon Monkey (Blue) and Balloon Swan (Yellow). All date to 2017. They are all from numbered editions of 999 in porcelain painted with chrome and published by Bernaudaud, Limoges, France.
Day two of Aidan Foley’s sale at Sixmilebridge today will include Persian rugs, art, antique furniture and collectibles. Matthews of Oldcastle, Co. Meath will have an online sale with 390 lots of jewellery, gold, silver, watches and Oriental lots at 6.30 pm. Estimates range from €20-20,000.
London’s Fashion Illustration Gallery is running an online auction entitled Room with a View until April 19. There are affordable drawings that Meagan Morrison has made during her travels to and from the most beautiful places on earth as @travelwritedraw, gouache on paper works by Jordi Labanda depicting the chicest of addresses from Marrakesh to Mulholland Drive that you would have to drag yourself away from after lockdown, line drawings of the London skyline by Will Broome and the garden path of Luke Edward Hall’s Gloucestershire home. Bidding closes in staggered lots from 4:15pm to 5.00pm on Sunday 19 April.
The top selling item at Julien’s Auctions All Beatles sale in Hollywood on April 10 was Paul McCartney’s handwritten lyrics to “Hey Jude”. These sold for an astounding $910,000 over an original estimate of $160,000-$180,000. A vintage Ludwig brand bass drumhead bearing The Beatles logo used at the Cow Palace Arena in San Francisco on August 19, 1964 made $200,000, four times over its original estimate of $50,000. Originally scheduled for the Hard Rock Cafe in New York the sale moved entirely online for a global audience of registered bidders. The spectacular results demonstrate that an online platform in times of lockdown works.

This painting by Paul Henry which comes up at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International online art auction on April 14, is all about an Ireland that is out of reach to most of us over this lockdown Easter Weekend. The scene for the c1929 work titled Celtic Cross in a West of Ireland Landscape is imagined, the cross is not. It is based on the Cross of Muiredach at Monasterboice in Co. Louth. The catalogue is online, this work is estimated at €150,000-250,000.
THIS large Irish silver salver by Thomas Walker, Dublin comes up at Sotheby’s New York Style Online, silver furniture and ceramics sale which runs until April 22. Dated 1747 the arms are those of St. Leger with Deane in pretense for St. Leger Aldworth M.P. He assumed the name St. Leger on inheriting the estates of his maternal ancestors and in 1776 became Baron Doneraile of Doneraile. It is estimated at $15,000-20,000.

The original stage from the first Beatles performance at Lathom Hall in Liverpool on May 14, 1960 for one night only as The Silver Beats (their original band name) comes up at Julien’s live online auction in Hollywood on April 10. The auction will take place on the 50th anniversary of the bands break up. The group, whose name became The Silver Beetles and then finally as The Beatles, would play at Lathom Hall on ten more occasions. The final performance there was on February 25, 1961, George Harrison’s 18th Birthday. Nearly 250 Beatles items featuring some never-before-seen memorabilia, guitars and instruments, autographed items, rare vinyl and collectibles will come under the hammer. Other highlights include Paul McCartney’s handwritten lyrics for “Hey Jude”, a Spalding baseball signed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr from The Beatles final U.S. concert in San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s “BAGISM” drawing, featured in the couple’s 1969 Bed in Peace documentary as part of their demonstration against the Vietnam War, a pair of vintage camel beige wide-cut corduroy trousers worn by John Lennon on the Magical Mystery Tour in the 1960s and a pen on paper caricature drawing of a three legged pirate created by John Lennon for his 1963 book, In His Own Write.

Iconic jewels from leading houses feature at Christie’s New York jewels online sale from April 13-24. The sale features work from Boucheron, Bulgari, Cartier, David Webb, Graff, Tiffany, Van Cleef and Arpels and Verdura. More than 160 lots are on offer with bidding starting at below $2,000. If a Zambian emerald is what you really really want then look no further than Matthews of Oldcastle in Co. Meath. Despite the lockdown the sales keep cropping up online and Matthews will offer this platinum mounted 10.4 carat emerald ring with diamond mounted shoulders at a live online auction at 6.30 pm on April 14. With an estimate of 20,000-30,000 it is one of the most expensively estimated lots in a sale of 390 lots of Jewellery, Gold, Silver, Wristwatches, Oriental and other Objects of Virtue with reserves from 20-20,000.
Bob Marley’s last ever outdoor concert was at Dalymount Park in Dublin in 1980. An original poster for that event is included in Aidan Foley’s live internet auction of 283 lots on Monday April 13. The poster for an afternoon in the park on Sunday, July 6 of that year lists Bob Marley and The Wailers with special guests The Average White Band. Lot 102 is estimated at 1,000-1,200 on Easy Live Auctions.
Marley’s last concert was at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in September 1980. He had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1977 and at this stage it had spread to his brain. He died in May 1981.
