    ANOTHER GREAT NIGHT OF IRISH ART SALES

    A Yeats at 210,000 and a Henry at 97,000 helped to make for another great night for Irish art sales in Dublin this evening.  These prices at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction are hammer, to which fees and commissions amounting to just under 25% will be added.  They continue the trend established at last weeks Irish art sales in Dublin, which were notable for competitive bidding and a number of above estimate prices.  This is in sharp contrast to the situation in latter years and shows that the recovery in prices in the market for Irish art is now well and truly established.  One work by Michael Flatley sold for 34,000, the second was passed. Each one had been estimated at 30,000-50,000.  Dan O’Neill’s Convad made 15,000 at hammer.  Other prices included St. George’s Market, Belfast by Markey Robinson (14,000), Glacier III by Barrie Cooke (7,600), White Scarecrow and Clown by John Shinnors (11,000), Grid by John Kingerlee (6,000), Second Version of Painting 1946 (1971), a lithograph by Francis Bacon (7,500),  Whispering leaves and wandering sheep by Joseph Malachy Kavanagh (8,500), Tarring the Shed by Nano Reid (11,500), Being 1997 by Louis le Brocquy (13,000) and Barn, West of Ireland by Donald Teskey (9,000).

    YEATS AND HENRY AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL’S DUBLIN AUCTION

    Fine works by Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry are included in Morgan O’Driscoll‘s sale Irish and International art auction at the RDS on December 7.  In the wake of successful sales of Irish art in Dublin already this week there is anticipation around this sale which is headed by a 1949 Jack B. Yeats entitled Business. Estimated at 200,000-300,000 this work was once in the Jefferson Smurfit collection.  Morgan O’Driscoll has just completed a viewing for this sale in London.     SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL’S ART SALE IN DUBLIN

    There is something to suit all tastes at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction at the RDS on September 14.  The sale of 110 lots features mostly Irish art and sculpture, but some international artists are represented as well.  You do not, for example, see art by Robert Motherwell cropping up every day at auction in Ireland.  The screen print by Motherwell in this sale, from his London series, was at Marlborough Fine Art in London and then in a private collection.  The Pig Market by the Cork 19th century artist Charles Henry Cook (c1830-1906) is one rarity. It is estimated at 3,000-5,000. Born in Bandon he exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in the 1860’s and ’70’s from an address at Patrick St. in Cork.  St. Patrick’s Day by Cook is in the collection of the National Library of Ireland.  The catalogue is online.     EARLY DRAWINGS BY PAUL HENRY AT O’DRISCOLL AUCTION

    Early drawings by Paul Henry (1876-1958) unseen in this country since the 1940’s will be a highlight at Morgan O’Driscoll’s sale of Irish and International art at the RDS on September 14. The two drawings, Boy with a Flute (1910) and Woman with Fagots (1904) were acquired directly from the artist and have been in New Zealand since the 1940’s.  Each one is estimated at 15,000-25,000.

    There is sculpture by John Behan and others,  an original screen print by Robert Motherwell and Old Time Dance by Dan O’Neill which depicts a night time scene and a couple dancing.  The sale of 110 lots will be on view at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Skibbereen offices from September 4-7  and in Dublin at the RDS Minerva Suite from September 11.

    MADERSON LEADS AT IRISH ART ONLINE AUCTION

    Arthur Maderson’s Le Marche de Nuit (The Night Market) was the top lot at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online auction of Irish art this week. It made 4,200 in an auction that was 90% sold.  John Behan’s Summer Birds, a unique bronze sculpture, sold for 3,000 and Coral Strand, Connemara by Kenneth Webb made 2,800.

    VARIETY OF ARTWORK AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL CORK SALE

    FROM Shinnors to Scott, Markey to Maderson  the Morgan O’Driscoll Irish art sale in Cork on October 17 has much variety to offer collectors. There are abstracts and still lifes, landscapes, portraits, beaches, horses and cliffs.  Despite the Yeats effect – the impact of the million euro Yeats’ painting at Adams at the end of September on the market for Irish art – the estimates in this sale represent good value.

    The 285 lot auction is at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Little Island, Cork on October 17  at 6.30 p.m.  Here is a small selection from what is on offer. The entire catalogue is on-line:

    UPDATE:  THE sale brought in 212,000 at hammer.  The top lot was Potato Gatherers by Markey Robinson which made 6,400 and there were good prices for works by Mark O’Neill, Kenneth Webb, John Shinnors and Arthur Maderson.
