    WEST CORK NO RESERVES ART AUCTION 100% SOLD

    THE Morgan O’Driscoll no reserves art sale of work by west Cork based artists on July 31 was 100 per cent sold.  The top lot was Martin Stone’s oil of Ballydehob, which made 1,600.  In general the 111 works sold for prices which were generally under the low estimate.  There was a big attendance at the Skibbereen viewing and sale. The no reserve auction demonstrated a strong appetite for value in the market in the teeth of Ireland’s continuing recession.

    SUMMER SALE IN SKIBBEREEN ON SUNDAY

    A summer auction with 539 lots on the catalogue takes place in Skibbereen in west Cork on Sunday June 26.    Auctioneer Morgan O’Driscoll will offer a variety of lots including furniture, art, porcelain, silver, plate and collectibles.

    The venue is Railway House, Bypass Road, Skibbereen.  The sale starts at 4 p.m.  Here is small selection of what is on offer.  The entire catalogue is on-line.

    UPDATE:   Around 84 per cent of lots on offer found buyers at a sale which attracted a good number of people on a warm summer day.

    Brian Ballard RUA (b.1943) 'Poppies and Books' is estimated at 1,700-2,500. UPDATE: IT MADE 1,700

    DILLON’S SPANISH FISHING VILLAGE AT CORK ART SALE

    A total of 289 lots of mostly Irish art will be offered at the Morgan O’Driscoll fine art sale at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cork on May 9.  Internationally celebrated  artists Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol are represented by limited edition prints.  The most expensively estimated lot on offer is Gerard Dillon’s Spanish fishing village which is estimated at 20,000-25,000.
    There are prime works by Markey Robinson, William Conor, Maurice Wilks, William Crozier, Colin Watson, Mark O’Neill, Dan O”Neill, James Humbert Craig and Sean McSweeney.
    Here is a small selection.  The entire catalogue is on-line.
    UPDATE:  Around 68 per cent of lots were sold.  The top lot was was William Conor’s Music Session, a work with crayon which made 13,500.

    IAN HUMPHREYS STUDIO SALE IN WEST CORK

    A studio sale of the work of artist Ian Humphreys will be held by auctioneer Morgan O’Driscoll in Skibbereen, west Cork on Easter Sunday (April 24) at 4 p.m.  The British born (1956) artist and graduate of Exeter College of Art has work in a number of public and private collections.  He has lived on Heir Island off the west Cork coast since 1999.  The sale features 80 lots in a variety of media over dates from 1976 to 2010.

    There are no reserves.  Estimates are a guide. Here is a sample, click on any image to enlarge:

    UPDATE: All lots were sold in an auction that realised 120,000.  There were buyers from Texas, the UK, Holland, Germany and Ireland, some bidding on the internet.  The auction attracted a large crowd including people on holiday in west Cork for Easter.

    IRISH ART PRICED TO SELL AT CORK SALE

    The first Morgan O’Driscoll Irish art sale of 2011 takes place at the Radisson Hotel, Little Island, Cork on Monday February 7 at 6.30 p.m.
    This 285 lot sale features everything from a watercolour landscape by Frank McKelvey to abstract prints by Sean Scully, interior scenes by Liam Treacy and a nude by Markey Robinson. There is work by the ever popular Arthur Maderson and Viva Nicaragua is the title of a mixed media piece by Robert Ballagh.
    There is an affordable oil on paper by Cecil King and many works by highly collectable artists including Brian Ballard, Barrie Castle, Erskine Nicholl, Pauline Bewick, Kenneth Webb, George Campbell, Charles Brady, Ciaran Lennon and Sean McSweeney,
    The more expensively estimated lots include Markey Robinson’s large landscape, The Coastal Village (14,000-18,00),  the British artist William Gibbs McKenzie (1857-1924). “Street scene with newspaper vendors and boys playing a game of spinner” (10,000-15,000), Harry Kernoff’s Bellevue Park Steps (5,000-7,000), Mark O’Neill’s The
    Committee (7,000-9,000),  John Shinnors Bus Stop, White House (5,000-7,000), Kenneth Webb’s Rock Pool, Connemara (12,000-15,000), Liam O’Neill’s Portrait of a Man ( 8,000-10,000) and a bronze by F.E. MacWilliams entitled Lying Down Girl (12,000-15,000). This is a sale where art is priced to sell with many lots to be sold without

    reserve.

    UPDATE: The auction was 71 per cent sold and brought in 219,000 exclusive of fees.  Markey Robinson’s Coastal Village was withdrawn at 12,000, the William Gibbs McKenzie made 10,000., Harry Kernoff’s Bellvue Park Steps was withdrawn, Mark O’Neill’s The Committee made 6,300, Liam O’Neill’s portrait of a man failed to sell and F.E. MacWilliams Lying Down Girl made 11,000.

    SAMUEL BECKETT’S ENDGAME, A RARE FIRST EDITION

    A first edition of Endgame for sale in Cork. UPDATE: IT WAS UNSOLD

    Samuel Beckett’s Endgame,  in its first French edition from 1957, comes up at the Morgan O’Driscoll sale in Cork on Monday, November 29.
    Arriving on the market at the moment when the financial game is up for Ireland, the national endgame for this indebted country involving a financial bailout from the IMF, the ECB and countries like Britain and Sweden, this particular version is Number 32 in an edition of 54 numbered copies.  It is estimated at 3,500-4,500.
    Endgame is a one act play with four characters by the Nobel Prize winning Irish writer. It was originally written in French and entitled Fin de partie.  Beckett, as was his custom, translated it into English.
    The play was first performed in a French language production at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1957.
    A first edition of L’innommable (The Unnamable) by Beckett, inscribed by the author in 1953, also features in the sale.  It is estimated at 3,000-4,000.
    L’innommable is the final installment of Beckett’s trilogy of novels Molloy/Malone Dies/The Unnamable.   This edition was inscribed by Beckett to his Swedish translator Carl Gustaf Birger Bjurstrom.
    Morgan O’Driscoll will conduct two auctions at the Radisson Hotel at Little Island in Cork on November 29,   The 296 lot antique furniture, silver, Republican memorabilia and rare book
    auction at 4 p.m. will be followed by a 225 lot art sale at 7 p.m.
