    ENGLISH ROYAL WEDDING, IRISH AUCTION, FRENCH BRANDY

    A 30 year old bottle of French brandy commemorating an English Royal wedding features at an Irish auction in May.
    Lot 469 at Mealy’s sale of fine and decorative art at Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on May 4 is a Limoges container of Cognac Camus modelled as a book to commemorate the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana on July 29, 1981.  There are separate colour photos and drawings of the star crossed pair on the front and colour crests of the Prince and Princess of Wales on the back.  This limited edition – La Grande Marque No. 602 – is estimated at 120-180 euro.
    The 831 lot sale features furniture, paintings, jewellery, clocks, carpets, rugs, bronzes, overmantles, porcelain and a collection whiskeys and brandies.

    TWO IRISH PROCLAMATIONS SEPARATED BY 113 YEARS

    Lot 41 at Whyte’s History, Literature and Collectibles sale in Dublin  on Saturday, April 16 is Robert Emmet’s Proclamation of 1803.  Allegedly 10,000 were printed but it was dangerous to be in possession of one, so most were destroyed.  This is one of only three known examples in private hands.  It begins:   “The Provisional Government TO THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND” and is estimated to make 30,000-50,000.  This is a sale of 628 lots.

    UPDATE:  This Proclamation made 25,000 in a sale that grossed over 300,000 with a selling rate of 70 per cent.

    Lot 527 at Adams Mealy’s Independence sale in Dublin on Tuesday, April 19 is this 1916 Proclamation. There are thought to be no more than 50 surviving copies, many in public collections. This one is estimated at €100,000-150,000.  There are 631 lots in total in this sale.

    CONTRASTING ANTIQUE SEATING STYLES

    These contrasting settees were quickly snapped up at Mealy’s auction in Mallow Castle, Co. Cork on April 5.   The Regency period carved giltwood settee on the left made a hammer price of 6,500.  It had been in the Kilkenny Castle sale in 1935.

    The ornate Japanese seat on the right made a hammer price of 5,800.  The back is profusely carved with scrolling dragons, the hinged seat is flanked with arm rests in the form of a dragon and it is just over five feet wide.  Click on either image to enlarge.

    GROGAN ARTWORK ACQUIRED BY CRAWFORD GALLERY, CORK

    THIS important contemporary record of a landmark Cork industry which employed up to 2,500 people in the depressed times of the early 19th century has been acquired by the Crawford Gallery in Cork.

    The oil on canvas by Nathanial Grogan senior (1740-1807) was acquired by the Crawford Gallery in Cork at Mealy’s auction of contents from Mallow Castle on April 5 for a hammer price of 12,000.

    Measuring 36″ x 48″ it shows Bartholomew O’Sullivan’s Paper Manufactory, Ironworks and Foundry at Beechmount, near Dripsey, Co. Cork.

    There is an engraved version of this picture at Cork Public Museum.

    MEALY’S MALLOW CASTLE AUCTION ON APRIL 5

    Mealy’s will have a one day 793 lot sale of contents from Mallow Castle, Co. Cork on Tuesday April 5.

    It will include portraits, paintings, tapestries, prints, Irish, English and Continental furniture, silver, plate, books and garden furniture.

    Viewing is at Mallow Castle on April 3 and April 4.  The sale will be held at the Hibernian Hotel, Mallow .

    UPDATE:  About 82 per cent of lots on offer found buyers in a sale of 793 lots which brought in a hammer price of 650,000.  The auctioneer’s said that some of the unsold lots had reserves that were too high.  The top lot was a fossilised pair of Gigantic Irish Elk Antlers which made 35,000.

    MALLOW CASTLE CONTENTS AUCTION BY MEALY’S

    Mealy’s will have a one days sale of contents from Mallow Castle at the Hibernian Hotel in Mallow on April 5.  It will feature around 800 lots including portraits, paintings, tapestries, furniture, glass, silver, plate, rugs, mirrors, books and garden furniture.
    Viewing will be at Mallow Castle on Sunday, April 3 and Monday, April 4.  The sale at the Hibernian Hotel will start at 10.30 a.m. on April 5.

    JOYCE AND MYLES na gCOPALEEN TAKE PRIDE OF PLACE AT MEALY’S

    A James Joyce broadside and an archive from Brian O’Nolan (Myles na gCopaleen) were the top lots at Mealy’s rare book sale in Dublin on December 14.   Each made 22,000.  The Holy Office, a pamphlet issued by James Joyce (see post on antiquesandartireland.com for December 6) had been estimated at 15,000-20,000. The 1960’s archive of correspondence between Myles na gCopaleen and his agents and publishers was estimated at 10,000-15,000.
    A Cuala Press visitors book with 1,900 signatures, including Yeats and Maud Gonne together, made 17,000. A previously unrecorded collection of letters by Sean O’Casey sold for 10,000.

    MEALY’S BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

    went ahead on December 7 in spite of the weather, realised just under 380,000.  There was a good number of bidders in the room and special facilities for advance and telephone bidding.  The joint top lots were “Brittany, The Stained Glass Window” by Aloysius O’Kelly, 1905 and a signed and numbered octagonal centre table after a design by Godwin.  Each made 19,200.

    A pair of Regency mirrors from Bantry House failed to sell at auction but remained under active negotiation afterwards.  Bronzes by the Cork sculptor Seamus Murphy made 11,800 and 7,800 respectively.

    Around 60 per cent of 1,166 lots on offer found buyers, including most of the higher value pieces.  Auctioneer Fonsie Mealy said he was happy with the result, particularly in view of the heavy snowfall in Co. Kilkenny the previous evening.

    JAMES JOYCE BROADSIDE AT MEALY’S BOOK SALE

    A rare James Joyce broadside heads Mealy’s December sale of  books, literature, manuscripts, and maps on December 14 at the D-4 Hotel in Dublin.  Only a handful of copies of a caustic attack entitled “The Holy Office” are known.  It was distributed privately to friends. This one belonged to Thomas Keohler, poet and friend of Joyce. It is estimated at 15,000-20,000.

    A collection of four letters between Joyce and Keohler is estimated at 6,000-8,000 and a copy of the original recordings by Joyce of part of Finnegan’s Wake is estimated at 2,000-3,000.
    The 950 lot sale includes a first limited edition of Ulysses (7,000-9,000) and an original Cuala Press Visitor’s Book with 1,900 signatures. The most remarkable is an entry where W.B. Yeats and Maud Gonne signed together on October 18, 1908. The poet and his muse were lovers for a brief time following the break up of her marriage to John MacBride. It is estimated at 8,000-12,000.  There is a collection of previously unrecorded letters by Sean O’Casey and first, signed, and limited editions by Oscar Wilde (The Ballad of Reading Gaol, and The Picture of Dorian Gray), Patrick Kavanagh, (The Green Fool, and Collected Poems), and Flann O’Brien (An Beal Bocht, At Swim Two Birds).
    UPDATE:  IN a highly successful sale the Joyce broadside sold for 22,000. It was bought by a private collector. A series of letters between Myles na gCopaleen (Brian O’Nolan) and his publishers and agents from the 1960’s also made 22,000.  The Cuala Press visitors book sold for 17,000 and the Sean O’Casey letters made 10,000.

    NEWFLASH – SHEPPARDS AND MEALY’S POSTONED DUE TO BAD WEATHER.

    ADVERSE weather conditions in Ireland have led both Sheppards and Mealy’s to postpone their sales for a week.  Snow is predicted in Counties Kilkenny and Laois, with heavy falls anticipated for Dublin and the east coast.
    Sheppards have rescheduled their three day sale for December 14, 15 AND 16.
    Mealy’s has re-positioned their two day sale due to take place on November 30 and December 1 to December 7 at 10 a.m. The entire sale of around 1,200 lots is now to be held on that day.
