    THE 1888 MEDAL FROM THE FIRST HURLING MATCH IN THE US  UPDATE: THIS MADE 1,900 AT HAMMER

    The wide variety of books and collectibles at Fonsie Mealy’s sale in Kilkenny on May 2 includes a souvenir of the first hurling match in America in 1888. This is in the form of a silver medal by E. Johnson of Dublin inscribed GAA 1888.  The medal, inscribed “First Prize, Peter Kennedy” is estimated at 2,000/3,000. A first edition of a 1597 English Herbal by John Gerarde is estimated at 700-1,000 and Col. Robertsons Observati0ns on The Attack and Military Defence of Ireland with hand coloured folding maps has an estimate of 800-1,200. An Irish Parliamentary Party banner inscribed Ballybricken for Redmond is estimated at 500-700 and the official programme of the Cork V. Dublin hurling final of 1927 known as the Thunder and Lightning final which Dublin won is estimated at 600-800.  The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

    There is always something of interest for everyone at rare books sales and Fonsie Mealy’s at the Ormonde Hotel in Kilkenny on May 19 is no exception.  Antique collectors of every sort will be interested in lot 577, the catalogue for the six day sale at Cahir Park House, Co. Tipperary in March 1962.   The sale was carried out by Battersby and Co. on the instructions of the executors of the late Col. R.B. Charteris.

    The 677 lot auction offers a rich section of sporting memorabilia and a wide variety of other items of interest.  The catalogue is online.

    JOYCE AND MYLES na gCOPALEEN TAKE PRIDE OF PLACE AT MEALY’S

    A James Joyce broadside and an archive from Brian O’Nolan (Myles na gCopaleen) were the top lots at Mealy’s rare book sale in Dublin on December 14.   Each made 22,000.  The Holy Office, a pamphlet issued by James Joyce (see post on antiquesandartireland.com for December 6) had been estimated at 15,000-20,000. The 1960’s archive of correspondence between Myles na gCopaleen and his agents and publishers was estimated at 10,000-15,000.
    A Cuala Press visitors book with 1,900 signatures, including Yeats and Maud Gonne together, made 17,000. A previously unrecorded collection of letters by Sean O’Casey sold for 10,000.
