    Gucci horsebit 18 carat gold statement bracelet UPDATE: THIS MADE 5,400 AT HAMMER

    A diamond solitaire ring, a Gucci horsebit gold statement bracelet and a pair of diamond daisy cluster form earrings will lead the evening online auction of jewellery, gold and silver by Matthews in Kells on August 5. The auction offers more than 560 lots of private sales, executor clearances and  pawnbroker unredeemed pledges.  Estimates range from €20 to €24,000 and the catalogue is online.

    George Lothian Hall (1825-1888) – Kenmare at James Adam. UPDATE: THIS MADE 260 AT HAMMER

    AN  early watercolour of Kenmare, a Waterford Crystal 12 branch chandelier, a diamond riviere necklace, an extremely rare antique Hardy brass face Perfect specimen reel, a white marble inlaid chimney piece and a carved limestone head are among the varied and highly collectible offerings at upcoming sales in Ireland.

    Easy and convenient to view these lots are from sales to be held online  respectively by Adams in Dublin, Keighery’s of Waterford, Purcell Auctioneers in Birr, Matthews of Kells, Mullens of Laurel Park in Bray and O’Donovans of Newcastle West between now and August 28.

    To take the last one first there is bound to be interest from Kerry in an 1886 watercolour of Kenmare by the Liverpool born George Lothian Hall whose paintings can be found in the Yale Centre for British Art.  With Kenmare faintly visible in the background it depicts a sailing boat, some other leisure vessels, cattle, cottages and a horse and trap. The estimate at the James Adam At Home sale of 394 lots on August 28 is €2,000-€3,000.

    The Waterford chandelier at Keighery’s auction on August 19 is estimated at €4,000-€6,000. This sale of over 650 lots will include items from the Furlong estate of historian and journalist Nicholas and antique dealer Mairead of Wexford.  There are antique books of Wexford and Irish history, some attractive furniture, various books on antiques, Imari chargers and collectibles including a sailing ship in a case among a large selection of lots.

    The timed online Classic and Contemporary Interiors sale at Mullen’s of Laurel Park at 6 pm on August 18 offers an inverted breakfront white marble inlaid chimney piece (€2,500-€3,500) as one of its leading pieces.  There is  furniture, art and lighting on offer in this sale of over 770 lots.

    A rare antique Hardy reel at Purcell’s UPDATE: THIS MADE 2,800 AT HAMMER

    With an estimate of €2,000-€4,000 an extremely rare Hardy specimen reel leads the sale by Purcell Auctioneers of Birr  on August 21.  It bears the stamp “B”, believed to be the mark of either Alfred or Frederick Broadley, two highly respected figures in the world of salmon perfect reel making whose contribution to the Hardy legacy is well documented. The leather case is marked  P D Mallock, Perth, a firm renowned for producing high quality angling accessories.  Purcells say the reel is in very good condition and the brass face remains structurally sound.

    If you are seriously interested in the diamond 91 stone riviere necklace  at Matthews in Kells on August 21 you must go and see it. There will be viewing from noon to 5 pm on August 18, 19 and 20.  It is 42 cm long and the total weight is 22 carats.  The estimate is €12,500-€17,500.  Even if it is beyond your range the auction offers 524 other lots of  jewellery, silver and collectibles including unredeemed pawnbroker pledges and executor instructions.

    A carved limestone head (€300-€400) is included in the online only sale at O’Donovans in Newcastle West on August 24. The auction comprises 303 lots from the Redemptorist fathers at Esker Monastery, Athenry,  Co. Galway.  Among them are sets of Stations of the Cross, statues, altars and no less than five sets of five pitch pine church pews with carved ends (€100-€150 a set).  All will be offered without reserve.

    YELLOW DIAMONDS – SAPPHIRES, RUBIES AND EMERALDS TOO

    Kashmir sapphires, Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds and lots and lots of diamonds – what’s not to like?  Traditionally this is the month for sales which bring a global audience of very rich buyers to Geneva for eye watering jewels with all sorts of exotic provenance and stories histories.

    The collections of modern and historic jewellery at sales like these are fascinating. Some lots make millions.  But passion for fine jewellery is not the exclusive preserve of the super rich. There will be plenty of pickings for the rest of us at sales on May 14 at both James Adam in Dublin and Matthews in Kells and O’Reilly’s in Dublin on May 15 with no shortage of choices across all price levels.

    On the international scene yellow diamonds are the flavour of the month this month. Christie’s will offer The Yellow Rose in Geneva on May 15, an unmounted rare fancy intense yellow pear modified and brilliant cut diamond of 202.18 carats. Like most intense yellow diamonds it is from South Africa where deposits are rich in nitrogen.

    Sotheby’s claim to have one of the world’s most significant fancy vivid yellow diamonds as a highlight of their magnificent jewels sale in Geneva on May 14.  The Allnatt – named for its first recorded owner Major Alfred Allnatt, renowned British racehorse owner, philanthropist and patron of the arts – weighs in at 101.29 carats and is celebrated for its richly saturated gold colour, older cutting style and elegant 1950’s mounting by Cartier.  It too originates in South Africa and the estimate is 5.6 million – 6.5 million Swiss francs (€5.74 million – €6.67 million).

    Both sales are distinguished by one of a kind pieces and historic and modern jewellery from houses like Harry Winston, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany, JAR and many others.

    Meantime in Ireland viewing is underway both in Dublin and in Kells for the jewellery sales on May 14 at Adams and Matthews and the regular monthly jewellery and silver sale at O’Reilly’s of Francis St. in Dublin takes place on Wednesday.  Top lots at Adams include a c1960 Serpenti bracelet watch and a ruby and diamond ring both by Bulgari.  Each is estimated at €40,000-€60,000. A rare turquoise, lapis lazuli and diamond bracelet by Fred, Paris c1960 is estimated at €20,000-€30,000.  

    A Trinity bangle by Cartier is estimated at €6,000-€8,000 while a Trinity ring by the same maker (€700-€900) is one of a selection of lots available at under €1,000 in a catalogue with 268 lots in total.

    A vintage diamond and enamel ring by David Morris hallmarked London 1975 is the top lot at O’Reilly’s with an estimate of €58,000-€65,000. It comes with a gold rope link and black enamel surround. A total of 234 lots will come under the hammer.

    In Kells the auction at Matthews will offer silver and gold from various executor instructions, pawnbrokers unredeemed pledges and lots from private clients.  The top lot is a Toi et Moi diamond ring (€12,000-€18,000).  There is much to choose from in a wide selection of rings, brooches, bracelets, earrings, pendants and wristwatches.  Happy hunting….

    TWO DAYS OF SALES BY MATTHEWS IN KELLS

    The two day auction by Matthews in Kells on October 18 and 19 will offer a private collection of antique furniture, jewellery, paintings and collectibles from the estate of Mrs. Mel O’Flynn of Athlone and other clients. She was first lady president of Athlone Chamber of Commerce and was deeply involved with The Little Theatre. She made her last stage appearance at the age of 91. Mel O’Flynn founded Arcadia Antiques of Athlone and Galway in the 1980’s and was a noted collector of jewellery, silver and antiques. Viewing gets underway in Kells on October 15 and the catalogue is online.

    Lot 547 at Matthews sale online at Kells, Co. Meath on August 7 is this antique marquetry decorated ormolu mounted table. It is estimated at 1,200-1,800. The most expensively estimated lot at this jewellery, gold and antique sale is a gentleman’s Rolex wristwatch (6,000-8,000) (UPDATE – 6,100 AT HAMMER). The sale is comprised of 560 lots of jewellery, gold and silver and nearly 200 lots of antique furniture, mirrors, rugs, pictures and porcelain.     This 20 foot long Irish William IV dining table is among the top lots at Matthews original country house clearance auction on May 10. The executors sale of the estate of the late Trevor Fitzherbert of Rockfield, Athboy Road, Kells, Co. Meath offers a total of 950 lots and is on view at the property.     You never know what you might come across at an auction of house contents. Which is why they are brimful of interest. This copper deep sea divers helmet with the insignia of the US Navy Mark V full size is one of the more unusual collectibles at Matthews sale of contents of Rath House, Dundalk on March 20. There are 1,117 lots including antiques, art, silver and collectibles. The helmet is lot 47 and is estimated at just 120-180.

    An original copy of the Irish Proclamation. UPDATE: THIS MADE 130,000 AT HAMMER

    An original copy of the Proclamation of Independence comes up as lot 937 at Matthews sale of a single owner collection on the evening of November 30. This rare survivor – the most important document in the history of the Irish Nation – was issued by the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army and read by Padraig Pearse from the steps of the GPO on O Connell Street, Dublin on Easter Monday 1916. This copy was last sold at Adams in Dublin in 2006. It is estimated at 120,000-€180,000.
