    FREUD’S PORTRAIT OF ANDREW PARKER BOWLES MAKES $34.8 MILLION

    The Brigadier, Lucian Freud’s portrait of Andrew Parker-Bowles in army dress uniform, sold for $34,885,000 at Christie’s in New York last night. The Post War and contemporary art evening sale brought in $331,809,000.  Parker-Bowles is dressed in his ceremonial uniform as a former Commanding Officer of the Household Cavalry.  This is a rare portrait by Freud of a clothed sitter which has been widely acclaimed as an intensely personal portrait of a deeply private man.  Artist and sitter met through their shared love of horses.

    A Spider by Louise Bourgeois sold for $28,165,000.  These mammoth bronze sculptures have gained public and critical appreciation from Tate Modern in London to the Guggenheim in Bilbao and The National Gallery of Art in Washington. Concetto Spaziale, La Fine di Dio by Lucio Fontana made $29,173,000, an untitled Cy Twombly  work sold for $17,525,000, Four Marilyns by Andy Warhol made $36,005,000 and Little Electric Chair by Warhol made $11,589,000.

    ANDY WARHOL’S PRINTMAKING INNOVATIONS AT LONDON SALE

    The breadth of Andy Warhol’s work and his innovations in printmaking will be highlighted at Sotheby’s biannual prints and multiples sale in London on September 29.  The auction will feature more than 30 lots by the artist – 89 prints in total – comprising both single works and complete sets.  There are two private collections, one a private Slovakian collection, the other from the family of Hermann Wunsche, which offer insight into Warhol’s importance in Europe.   Wunsche co-ordinated the first catalogue raisonne of Warhol’s editions which was published in Germany in 1980.

    SOTHEBY’S RECORDS 28% INCREASE IN ONLINE BIDDERS

    A significant growth in online transactions including a 28% increase in online bidders so far in 2015 was reported by Sotheby’s today.  In what has been a good season for the auction house there has been  a 45% increase in the number of lots purchased online and a 35% increase in value spent by online buyers this year.

    The Impressionist and Modern Art sales series in London achieved a 40% rise compared to the values of 2014 and Contemporary Art sales are 30% up in value terms. The Impressionist and Modern sale recorded an increase of 20% in geographical reach and 20% of Contemporary Art buyers were new to this category.  In the Old Masters sales series there was a doubling in the number of buyers from Asia and an 18% increase in buyers from Russia.

    Overall there has been an increase of 30% in new buyers at Sotheby’s this year.  There has been a 51% increase in spend by Chinese buyers and a 35% increase in the number of buyers from China.

    Andy Warhol’s One Dollar Bill made £20.9 million to become the top lot at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art sale in London tonight. Painted in 1962 it was his first dollar painting. The sale brought in £130.4 million, a 40% increase on the same sale a year ago.  However the painting billed as the highlight of the sale, a Francis Bacon Pope, did not sell and neither did two Warhol silkscreens. Nonetheless this was the highest ever total for an auction of contemporary art in Europe. Two newly discovered works by Francis Bacon made £30 million and Four Eggs on a Plate, a present from Lucian Freud to the late Dowager Duchess of Devonshire made just short of one million after being chased by seven bidders.

    FROM CROKE PARK TO LADY DI AT WHYTE’S ECLECTIC COLLECTOR SALE

    FROM Croke Park to Lady Di, Irish rugby to The Beatles, Whyte’s Eclectic Collector sale in Dublin on June 13 holds plenty of interest.  Rare Irish sporting medals, a collection of 5,000 postcards in 144 lots, three Princess Diana dolls by master maker Paul Crees, film and pop memorabilia including mementoes of The Beatles and the Rolling Stones make a wide ranging mix.  There are 531 lots on the catalogue.  The first 144 are postcards from a collection formed by Dublin based film producer and director Peter Holder.  He began it for the purpose of illustrating period scenes in Ireland for film productions.  Examples from Ancient Rome, Britain and America are among 100 lots of coins.  There are three Princess Diana dolls by Paul Crees with estimates from 1,000-2,500. Lot 368 is a medal presented to a member of Pierce O’Mahony’s club from Navan for the 1895 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship played on March 15, 1896.  It was the first final to be played in Jones’ Road, later Croke Park. The medal, together with a Leinster Football Championship 1895 medal is estimated at 5,000-7,000.  There is a collection of autographs spanning the past 70 years of Irish rugby and 65 lots of Rock, Pop and Cinema memorabilia.  The catalogue is online.     UPDATE: The sale grossed €220,000, with 80% of lots sold. 400 bidders registered on line from North America, Europe, Australia, China, Japan, UAE and Qatar. Most of the lots sold in the room, which included dealers and collectors from Ireland, UK and USA.

    ROTHKO’S YELLOW AND BLUE SELLS FOR $46.5 MILLION

    Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Yellow and Blue) made $46.5 million at Sotheby’s in New York last night. It was the top lot in a contemporary art evening sale which realised $380 million and set seven new artist price records.  There was global participation with works consigned from 11 countries and bidders from 40 countries and significant participation from Latin America and  Asia.

    Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Yellow and Blue), which was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon for over 30 years, sold for $46,450,000 to an anonymous client after it was underbid by an Asian private collector.

    Roy Lichtenstein’s The Ring (Engagement) sold for $41,690,000.  The work has had only two owners in 50 years and came from the collection of Stefan T. Edlis. The price is nearly 20 times the $2,202,500 the work fetched when it last appeared at auction in November 1997 at Sotheby’s.

    There were artists records for Christopher Wool, Sigmar Polke, Mark Bradford, Mark Grotjahn, Danh Vô, Thomas Struth and Helen Frankenthaler.

    DILLON’S SPANISH FISHING VILLAGE AT CORK ART SALE

    A total of 289 lots of mostly Irish art will be offered at the Morgan O’Driscoll fine art sale at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cork on May 9.  Internationally celebrated  artists Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol are represented by limited edition prints.  The most expensively estimated lot on offer is Gerard Dillon’s Spanish fishing village which is estimated at 20,000-25,000.
    There are prime works by Markey Robinson, William Conor, Maurice Wilks, William Crozier, Colin Watson, Mark O’Neill, Dan O”Neill, James Humbert Craig and Sean McSweeney.
    Here is a small selection.  The entire catalogue is on-line.
    UPDATE:  Around 68 per cent of lots were sold.  The top lot was was William Conor’s Music Session, a work with crayon which made 13,500.
