An Irish Georgian three pillar dining table is among the lots to feature at the Lynes and Lynes auction at Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on November 26.  The auction features a fine collection of antique furniture from houses including Dunkathel House in Glanmire and Castlefreke, both in Co. Cork.

The Georgian dining table (40,000-60,000) is one of a number of antique furniture lots from Dunakethel House.  Another lot from the house, a rare circular butler’s tray with fittings, is estimated  at 20,000-25,000.  A large gilt over mantle mirror (320,000-30,000) was supplied to the house in 1837.  It was made by Richard Harris, carver and gilder of Hanover St., Cork.  Other lots bound to be of interest to serious collectors are a large fruitwood bookcase (40,000-60,000), a pair of Cork side tables with cross banded tops (30,000-50,000) and ten Georgian Cork dining chairs.

19th century terrestrial globe by C Smith and Sons London 1858. UPDATE: THIS MADE 6,800.

A pair of early 19th century oak stools which last changed hands at Lord Carbery’s auction in 1919 feature at the next Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtuohill, Co. Cork on November 26.

Auctioneer Denis Lynes believes they were designed by renowned architect Sir Richard Morrisson when he was commissioned in 1820 to make alterations to Castle Freke in west Cork.

The property, originally a 15th century tower house, was altered to a castellated style by Morrisson. It developed into a Gothic ruin during the second half of the 20th century and is now being slowly restored by a member of the Freke family.

In its heyday the Castle Freke estate had its own sawmills, Italian and Irish cabinetmakers, and a ready supply of oak.  The oak stools are estimated at 30,000-40,000.

Another lot of note at this auction is a 19th century terrestrial globe by C Smith and Sons London 1858.  It is estimated at 2,000-3,000.

THIS exceptional Queen Anne scarlet, silvered and gilt Japanned bureau cabinet is a feature lot at Sotheby’s sale of Important Furniture in London on December 6.

Large bureaux like this one with its mirrored doors are among the glories of Queen Anne furniture.

Scarlet “Japan” is rarer than black.  Made just over 300 years ago around 1710 it is in original condition.  The piece is estimated at £100,000-150,000.

An oval satinwood inlaid writing desk probably by Butler’s of Dublin, an inlaid Killarney work box stamped 1855 and a French kingwood and marquetry bureau plat feature at Marshs auction in Cork city centre on November 5. They are estimated respectively at 2,500-3,000, 4,000-5,000 and 2,000-2,500.  The sale, which is strong in antique furniture, includes a pair of French gilt armchairs (2,500-3,000), a William IV teapoy (750-1,000), a Georgian inlaid satinwood corner cupboard (1,000-1,500) and a Regency walnut games/work table (1,500-2,000).  More than 300 lots are on offer.  Here is a small selection:

Irish Georgian circular table by Stahan made 7,000 at Woodwards. (Click on image to enlarge).

This antique circular Irish Georgian dining or library table made 7,000 at the Woodwards auction in Cork on October 19. The table, which is marked Strahan, is 66″ wide and on a foliate carved tripod with scroll feet.  Founded in Dublin in 1776 Robert Strahan’s firm served some of the great country houses of Ireland. The Strahan output is noted for its quality.

By 1845 they had workshops at Henry St. and Leinster St.  Robert Strahan and Co. showed at the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition in 1853, which had been modelled on the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, and at the London International Exhibition of 1862.
