EILEEN GRAY ARMCHAIR AND TABLE AT SOTHEBY’S PARIS

Major works by Eileen Gray, the world renowned Irish designer, are among seven Art Deco masterpieces from the 1920’s-’30’s at Sotheby’s in Paris on November 22.

Gray’s legendary Transat armchair (est. 800,000-1 million euro) and an extraordinary monumental curved bar by Eckart Muthesius (400,000-600,000) were designed for the Palace of the Maharajah of Indore. They were at Sotheby’s Monaco sale of furniture from the Maharajah’s Palace in 1980.

Other highlights include a coffee table Gray designed for her own home, the villa Tempe à Pailla in the South of France. Of copper and tubular steel it was bequeathed by Gray to the mother of the present owner. It is estimated at 100,000-150,000.

There is a spectacular pair of monumental mirrored moulded glass doors by René Lalique measuring nine feet by six feet (400,000-600,000)(update: they made 2,024,750) and a monumental decorative eight fold panel by Jean Dunand from 1929. Entitled Monkey’s Playing in the Trees it is of coloured lacquer with incised motifs on a gold leaf ground. It measurs 15′ x 9′ and is estimated at 300,000-500,000. (Update: this was unsold). Other lots include an iconic dining table table in black lacquered oxidised metal by Eugène Printz (300,000-500,000) and an oak and palissander shagreen lined cabinet by Marcel Coard c1927. This is estimated at 150,000-200,000.

EXCEPTIONAL QUEEN ANNE SCARLET JAPANNED CABINET

THIS exceptional Queen Anne scarlet, silvered and gilt Japanned bureau cabinet is a feature lot at Sotheby’s sale of Important Furniture in London on December 6.

Large bureaux like this one with its mirrored doors are among the glories of Queen Anne furniture.

Scarlet “Japan” is rarer than black. Made just over 300 years ago around 1710 it is in original condition. The piece is estimated at £100,000-150,000.

MARSHS CORK AUCTION HAS INTERESTING ANTIQUE FURNITURE

An oval satinwood inlaid writing desk probably by Butler’s of Dublin, an inlaid Killarney work box stamped 1855 and a French kingwood and marquetry bureau plat feature at Marshs auction in Cork city centre on November 5. They are estimated respectively at 2,500-3,000, 4,000-5,000 and 2,000-2,500. The sale, which is strong in antique furniture, includes a pair of French gilt armchairs (2,500-3,000), a William IV teapoy (750-1,000), a Georgian inlaid satinwood corner cupboard (1,000-1,500) and a Regency walnut games/work table (1,500-2,000). More than 300 lots are on offer. Here is a small selection:

PORTRAIT OF QUEEN HENRIETTA MARIA FROM MALAHIDE CASTLE

THE portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria shown here was once at Malahide Castle. From the circle of Sir Anthony van Dyck it features at Sotheby’s sale of Old Master and British paintings in London on October 27. The portrait was part of the collection of Lord Talbot de Malahide and was sold with the house contents. It relates to an important, lost three-quarter length portrait of Henrietta Maria by van Dyck, and is one of several known variants, among which there is a good version in the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego, and another at the Bomann-Museum at Celle. It is estimated at £8,000-£12,000.

Henrietta Maria, youngest daughter of King Henri IV of France and Marie de Medici, was married to the Prince of Wales in 1625 aged 15. As a catholic she was not allowed to be crowned alongside her husband when he became King Charles I in 1626.

A number of lots of Irish interest feature at Sotheby’s sale of Furniture, Tapestries, Ceramics, Clocks, Silver and Carpets in London on November 2. Lot 245 is a set of four Irish George II mahogany chairs, probably Irish c1750 estimated at £4,000-6,000. Lot 246 is an Irish George II style carved mahogany centre table estimated at £5,000-7,000 and lot 252 is a Regency mahogany bookcase, possibly Irish with an estimate of £15,000-25,000.

ANTIQUE IRISH GEORGIAN TABLE BY STRAHAN MAKES 7,000 AT WOODWARDS

This antique circular Irish Georgian dining or library table made 7,000 at the Woodwards auction in Cork on October 19. The table, which is marked Strahan, is 66″ wide and on a foliate carved tripod with scroll feet. Founded in Dublin in 1776 Robert Strahan’s firm served some of the great country houses of Ireland. The Strahan output is noted for its quality.

By 1845 they had workshops at Henry St. and Leinster St. Robert Strahan and Co. showed at the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition in 1853, which had been modelled on the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851, and at the London International Exhibition of 1862.

CHINESE CERAMICS, IRISH FURNITURE AND TRIBAL ART AT HEGARTY’S

Chinese ceramics from several collections, antique furniture, art, silver and glass all feature at Hegarty’s auction in Bandon on October 23 at 3 p.m. The sale includes Chinese jade, monochrome wares from the Qing and Ming periods, 19th century Sikh watercolours, an Easter Island carving and a Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) doll.

Furniture includes an Irish George II foldover tea table, an Irish davenport, bookcases, desks, Victorian chests of drawers, display cabinets, dining chairs and tables and a pair of Edwardian chairs.

CHINESE CHAIRS MAKE 69,000 AT IRISH AUCTION

The 69,000 euro pair of chairs.

THIS pair of Chinese chairs, estimated at 1,500-2,500, was the surprise of the sale at Sheppards in Durrow. They became the most expensive items of Chinese furniture ever sold in Ireland when they made 69,000. The chairs had been bought in China and brought back to Ireland.

They are now going back there. The buyer, who bid on-line live on the internet, lives in Beijing. They had been described in the catalogue simply as a pair of eighteenth/nineteenth-century Chinese huanghuali hooped backed ceremonial chairs, each with a rattan seat, raised on square legs, joined by stretcher rails.

FINE IRISH FURNITURE AT ADAMS IN SLANE CASTLE

This rare Irish Georgian mirror is a highlight at Adams Slane Castle sale. UPDATE: IT WAS ESTIMATED AT 15,000-25,000 BUT FAILED TO SELL.

THERE is an emphasis on fine furniture at the James Adam Country House Collections sale at Slane Castle, Co. Meath on October 11. The auction of 700 lots features fine furniture, silver, glass, porcelain, pictures and photography.

There are pieces from the late Senator Edward McGuire and from the estate of Henriette and Serge Boissevain formely of Ballynatray House, Co Waterford.

The strong silver section centres on items commissioned by Archbishop Ryder of Tuam in the mid-18th century.

Highlights include the rare Irish Georgian giltwood mirror illustrated here. Exceptionally decorated, it is expected to make up to 20,000.

The sale is on view at Slane Castle from Saturday, October 8. UPDATE: THERE WAS A 70 PER CENT SELL RATE IN A SALE THAT REALISED 960,000 AT HAMMER.
