    CHINESE CHAIRS MAKE 69,000 AT IRISH AUCTION

    The 69,000 euro pair of chairs.

    THIS pair of Chinese chairs, estimated at 1,500-2,500, was the surprise of the sale at Sheppards in Durrow.  They became the most expensive items of Chinese furniture ever sold in Ireland when they made 69,000.  The chairs had been bought in China and brought back to Ireland.

    They are now going back there.  The buyer, who bid on-line live on the internet, lives in Beijing.  They had been described in the catalogue simply as a pair of eighteenth/nineteenth-century Chinese huanghuali hooped backed ceremonial chairs, each with a rattan seat, raised on square legs, joined by stretcher rails.

    FINE IRISH FURNITURE AT ADAMS IN SLANE CASTLE

    This rare Irish Georgian mirror is a highlight at Adams Slane Castle sale. UPDATE: IT WAS ESTIMATED AT 15,000-25,000 BUT FAILED TO SELL.

    THERE is an emphasis on fine furniture at the James Adam Country House Collections sale at Slane Castle, Co.  Meath on October 11.  The auction of 700 lots features fine furniture, silver, glass, porcelain, pictures and photography.

    There are pieces from the late Senator Edward McGuire and from the estate of Henriette and Serge Boissevain formely of Ballynatray House, Co Waterford.

    The strong silver section centres on items commissioned by Archbishop Ryder of Tuam in the mid-18th century.

    Highlights include the rare Irish Georgian giltwood mirror illustrated here.  Exceptionally decorated, it is expected to make up to 20,000.

    The sale is on view at Slane Castle from Saturday, October 8.  UPDATE: THERE WAS A 70 PER CENT SELL RATE IN A SALE THAT REALISED 960,000 AT HAMMER.

    AUTUMN FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS SALE AT MEALY’S

    There will be more than 1,200 lots at the two day autumn fine and decorative art sale at Mealy’s in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on October 4 and 5.  The auction features items from the Lyons Demesne, being sold on the instructions of the estate of Ryanair founder Dr. Tony Ryan, contents from a period home in the south east and a private collection of family crested and other silver.

    A Killarney wood centre table is a feature lot at Woodwards sale in Cork on September 21.  It is estimated at 8,000-12,000.

    The sale features a selection of Georgian, Regency, Victorian and Edwardian furniture. Artists whose work will feature include  Kenneth Webb, Elizabeth Brophy, Arthur Armstrong, Francis Danby, Robert Taylor Carson, Maurice Desmond, Somhairle MacCana and Marshall Hutson.

    EBONISED PANELS WITH PIETRA DURA INSETS AT LYNES AND LYNES

    A pair of ebonised and gilded pedestals with pietra dura decoration will come up for sale at Lynes and Lynes, Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on Saturday, September 17 at noon.  Dating from around 1860 they are estimated at 1,000-2,000.  This is an auction of part house contents and individual items of antique furniture with something for everyone. A Georgian hunt table is estimated at 1,000-1,500, as is a Georgian sideboard, a pair of antique library chairs has an estimate of 400-600 and an antique day bed is estimated at 100-200.  There are dining tables, chests of drawers, cabinets, coat stands, a Georgian fender and even some old chemist jars.

    LOTS TO COVET AT DUBLIN HOUSE CONTENTS AUCTION

    There is plenty to covet at a de Veres house contents auction at Westbury, Willowbank, Monkstown, Co. Dublin on September 19 at 2 p.m.  It was for many years the private residence of retired Dublin solicitor Noel Purcell, an avid collector.  Viewing is at the house, the auction will be held at the Presbyterian Hall at York Road, Dun Laoghaire.     A Meissen Group of Count Bruhl's tailor riding on a goat c1880. Count Bruhl (1700-1763) was prime minister of Saxony and director of the Meissen Porcelain factory. It is estimated at 2,000-3,000. UPDATE: THIS MADE 5,500 AT HAMMER.

    CHINESE AND JAPANESE LOTS IN BANDON SALE

    Around 300 lots including Chinese and Japanese porcelain, ivory and objets d’art will be sold at Hegarty’s in Bandon on Sunday September 4 at 4 p.m.  The sale features part two of the collection of the late
    Georgette Ellison, whose husband was a high ranking US military member stationed overseas post World War II.  The main lot at part one of the sale last July 24 was a Japanese smoker’s companion set presented to Mrs. Ellison by the late Emperor Hirohito. It was bought on the internet by a collector from Hong Kong for 3,800.
    The sale features  Victorian and Georgian furniture, English and Irish silver, an Irish Georgian plate bucket and a Cork longcase clock.

    LARGEST COUNTRY HOUSE SALE OF THE YEAR IN UK

    THE largest country house sale of the year will present about 1,200 lots from both Cowdray Park, home of Lord Cowdray (above right), and from Dunecht House, the Scottish home of Lord Cowdray’s brother, the Hon. Charles Pearson (above left).  The Christie’s sale is expected to realise about £5 million and estimates range from £50 to £500,000.

    The sale takes place at Cowdray Park in west Sussex over three days from September 13-15.

    Andrew Waters, Head of Private Collection and Country House Sales, Christie’s said: “Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray and his wife Annie, Lady Cowdray were among the most prolific and discerning British collectors of the early 20th century, coupling their considerable wealth with a taste for beautiful pictures, objects and works of art”.

    Many of the works were acquired by Weetman Dickinson Pearson (1856-1927) and his son, Weetman Harold Miller Pearson. Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray, developed his family firm, S. Pearson and Son Ltd., from a small company in Bradford into one of the most successful business empires of the 20th century. In 1889 he won the contract to drain Mexico City by means of a Grand Canal and, having gained the friendship of President Porfirio Diàz, Pearson developed vast oil fields in Mexico. He was for ten years Liberal MP for Colchester. Due to regular absences he was often referred to as ‘the Member for Mexico’. When he died in 1927 an American newspaper described him as ‘one of the greatest pioneers ever sent out of Britain. Pearson PLC exists today as a global media and education company and the largest book publisher in the world.
