    END OF IRISH AUSTERITY BUDGETS, GROUND TO BE MADE UP

    THE budget in the Irish Republic tomorrow is billed as the end of austerity, but there is much ground to be made up after years of financial hardship and increased taxes. This was evident to some extent at the two day Country House Collections auction by James Adam at Slane Castle which ended today.  Private buyers dominated a sale which grossed approximately  1.4 million, making it one of the most successful sales in the country this year.  However there was a degree of nervousness in the antique trade. Trade buyers were in short supply. The Maria Edgeworth table, billed as one of the top lots, remained unsold, but is under negotiation and may change hands in coming days.  Among the top lots were Yachts Racing past the Irish Lights Vessel off Dublin Bay by Samuel Walters (1811-1882), a pair of Library Globes by Newton and Son, London (1840-1841) and a marble bust of Benjamin Lee Guinness by John Henry Foley (1818-1874), each of which sold for a hammer price of 25,000.

    AN EYE ON THE GREAT MAKERS AT CHRISTIE’S

    Collectors know that with art and with furniture it is a good thing to do to keep your eye on the greats.  Those who live in big cities can do so by going to the best museums locally, the rest of us travel to them.  So much is absorbed by the eye that it is important to keep it tuned in.  Christie’s will offer an important American collection of 19th century furniture and works of art  in a sale entitled Chateau in London on October 28.  The collection focuses on signed pieces of the highest quality in the French Royal styles of the Ancien Régime. Comprising 66 lots, the sale presents masterpieces by the period’s preeminent craftsman, including François Linke, Alfred Beurdeley, Guillaume Grohé, Mathieu Befort and Henry Dasson, whose furniture was supplied from Paris to a global market. Their clients included Kings, Kaisers, Maharajas, and titans of industry and commerce such as the Rothschilds, who created an aesthetic and lifestyle which was emulated by powerful families in the United States of America, such as the Vanderbilts, Astors and Rockefellers. This collection evokes the grand Beaux-Arts building projects of the 19th century, when a new international elite competed to furnish their magnificent Renaissance-style châteaux with the most palatial furniture and objects. With estimates ranging from £3,000 to £400,000, the collection is expected to realise in excess of £3 million.  Here are some examples:

    A GREAT TABLE AND SOME SILVER FROM ADAMS AT SLANE

    HERE is a great table and some highly collectible silver from the James Adam Country House Collections auction at Slane Castle, Co. Meath on October 12 and 13.  The sale of over 850 lots offers much of interest to collectors at home and abroad.  Not least of these is this George I carved gilt wood side table in the manner of Benjamin Goodison. The red marble top has a thumb moulded rim above a flat carved apron centred by a human mask depicting Diana.   It is estimated at 30,000-50,000.

    Among the silver on offer are these prime pieces by makers Robert Calderwood of Dublin and James Foulkes and Michael McDermott of Cork. The auction goes on view on Thursday, October 9.  The catalogue is online.

    A pair of Regency period side cabinets with flame mahogany panels made in Cork are a feature lot at Marshs sale on October 4. The cabinets are estimated at 3,000-4,000. Other furniture includes an early Georgian walnut chest of drawers, a Cork writing bureau,  a two door bureau bookcase, an Irish Georgian console table with matching gilded mirror, a 19th century display cabinet and a set of six Cork 11-bar chairs.     UPDATE: A CORK made secrétaire sold for 1,500, a brass inlaid fold over card table sold for 1,700, an early Maurice Desmond made 540 and a oil scene by Marshall Hutson sold for 660.

    A BYGONE ERA RECALLED AT DE VERES ART AND DESIGN SALE

    An image redolent of an era long gone is a feature lot at de Veres Irish art and design auction in Dublin on September 30.  Sir John Lavery’s painting of Viscountess Castlerosse at Palm Springs in 1938, with all its connotations of the rich at play in the years between the First and Second World Wars, is estimated at 50,000-70,000.  Doris Delavigne married the 6th Earl of Kenmare in 1928. He established Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and is likely to have met Lavery in 1913 when the artist stayed at Kenmare House at the invitation of the 5th Earl. According to her husband’s first biographer Delavigne had “regal beauty with a viper’s tongue”. The sale features important works by Mainie Jellett and Paul Henry among 120 lots of art.  There is as well 35 lots of classic 20th century design furniture.  The catalogue is online.   UPDATE:  About 75% of lots sold and all the designer lots found eager buyers.

    Antique Irish furniture at very reasonable estimates will come up  at the Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtwohill , Co. Cork on September 27.  A Cork made hall table is estimated at just 800-1,200 and there are chests of drawers with estimates of just 100 euro up.   The auction offers antique settees and chairs, including a pair of Art Deco chairs and a Georgian reclining library chair. There is silver and jewellery with engagement and diamond dress rings and  a collection of paintings which has been in storage for a number of years.
