IRISH FURNITURE AT THE ARMORY SHOW IN NEW YORK

Fine Irish antique furniture is sure to be much admired by the discriminating New York audience at the Armory Show in Manhattan from January 23 to February 1. The Fulham Road based London dealers Apter-Fredericks, who specialise in Important English Furniture, will bring an attractive Irish side table to the Winter Antiques Show, and a fine Irish bottle carrier. Both pieces date to about 1750. The side table has been in an American collection for many years.

BOONTJE EXHIBITION AT SOTHEBY’S LONDON THIS MONTH

An exhibition of works by designer Tord Boontje and sculptor Emma Woffenden runs at Sotheby’s New Bond Street Galleries in London from January 6-18. Originals, curated by Janice Blackburn, will showcase furniture, lighting, jewellery and textiles from the internationally acclaimed designer and sculpture and drawings by his wife Emma Woffenden.

The centrepiece of the show is Boontje’s monumental Fig Leaf wardrobe, considered a masterpiece of 21st century design. No fewer than 11 ateliers across England and France worked on the wardrobe, which celebrates craft. The doors are encrusted with 616 hand painted enamel leaves. It was exhibited at the V and A in 2009, nominated the Best Furniture Design at the Brit Insurance Design Awards and Design of the Year 2008 in the Financial Times’ top ten design pieces of the 2000’s.

“Originals” is the first retrospective exhibition dedicated to the work of Boontje, whose work can be found in leading institutions like the V and A, Tate Modern and the Design Museum in London, MoMA and the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York and the Stedelijk Museum and the Groninger Museum in The Netherlands.

CORK 11-BAR CHAIRS MADE 3,600 AT LYNES AND LYNES

A set of eight Cork 11-bar chairs sold for 3,600 at Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on December 15. Demand for furniture and collectible items were strong at this auction of the second part of the collection of Patrick Cremin. The top lot was a Gillows cabinet which sold for 4,000. Elizabeth Brophy’s Watching the Birds sold for 1,250, a Georgian side table made 820, a pair of Georgian design wing back armchairs made 620, a pair of antique demi-lune side tables made 600, a pair of antique bedside lockers made 500 and an Irish Georgian brass fender made 950.

This set of Cork 11-bar chairs sold for 3,600.
