An impressive carved gilt wood side table in the manner of Matthias Locke is one of a number of furniture highlights at the upcoming James Adam on the premises house contents auction at Courtown House, Kilcock, Co. Kildare on April 22. This is a genuine country house auction with no lots added in. The side table was acquired in 1977 at the Carton House auction and the catalogue reproduces two photographs of the salon at Carton with the table in situ. It is estimated at 20,000 plus.
Also certain to create great interest is a pair of Irish Regency neo-classical gilt wood torcheres in the style of Robert Adam attributed to del Vecchio of Dublin. These two are estimated at 20,000 plus.
Courtown was owned by families of Norman descent like the Wogans, the Husseys and the Aylmers. The film director John Houston and his family rented the estate for a number of years in the 1950’s to hunt with the Kildares and other packs of hounds. The auction will include a number of important lots from the 1963 Courtown House auction catalogue. The catalogue is online.
