    A GREAT TABLE AND SOME SILVER FROM ADAMS AT SLANE

    HERE is a great table and some highly collectible silver from the James Adam Country House Collections auction at Slane Castle, Co. Meath on October 12 and 13.  The sale of over 850 lots offers much of interest to collectors at home and abroad.  Not least of these is this George I carved gilt wood side table in the manner of Benjamin Goodison. The red marble top has a thumb moulded rim above a flat carved apron centred by a human mask depicting Diana.   It is estimated at 30,000-50,000.

    Among the silver on offer are these prime pieces by makers Robert Calderwood of Dublin and James Foulkes and Michael McDermott of Cork. The auction goes on view on Thursday, October 9.  The catalogue is online.

    A pair of Regency period side cabinets with flame mahogany panels made in Cork are a feature lot at Marshs sale on October 4. The cabinets are estimated at 3,000-4,000. Other furniture includes an early Georgian walnut chest of drawers, a Cork writing bureau,  a two door bureau bookcase, an Irish Georgian console table with matching gilded mirror, a 19th century display cabinet and a set of six Cork 11-bar chairs. There is a collection of vintage fishing memorabilia from Day’s of Cork. There is more information about this sale online at Marshs, Cork.

    UPDATE: A CORK made secrétaire sold for 1,500, a brass inlaid fold over card table sold for 1,700, an early Maurice Desmond made 540 and a oil scene by Marshall Hutson sold for 660.

    A BYGONE ERA RECALLED AT DE VERES ART AND DESIGN SALE

    An image redolent of an era long gone is a feature lot at de Veres Irish art and design auction in Dublin on September 30.  Sir John Lavery’s painting of Viscountess Castlerosse at Palm Springs in 1938, with all its connotations of the rich at play in the years between the First and Second World Wars, is estimated at 50,000-70,000.  Doris Delavigne married the 6th Earl of Kenmare in 1928. He established Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and is likely to have met Lavery in 1913 when the artist stayed at Kenmare House at the invitation of the 5th Earl. According to her husband’s first biographer Delavigne had “regal beauty with a viper’s tongue”. The sale features important works by Mainie Jellett and Paul Henry among 120 lots of art.  There is as well 35 lots of classic 20th century design furniture.  The catalogue is online.   UPDATE:  About 75% of lots sold and all the designer lots found eager buyers.

    Antique Irish furniture at very reasonable estimates will come up  at the Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtwohill , Co. Cork on September 27.  A Cork made hall table is estimated at just 800-1,200 and there are chests of drawers with estimates of just 100 euro up.   The auction offers antique settees and chairs, including a pair of Art Deco chairs and a Georgian reclining library chair. There is silver and jewellery with engagement and diamond dress rings and  a collection of paintings which has been in storage for a number of years.     THE COLLECTION OF RACHEL LAMBERT MELLON AT SOTHEBY’S

    A Rothko and a spectacular Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond are among the highlights of the November sales series at Sotheby’s in New York of the extraordinary collection of the late Rachel Lambert Mellow.  Details of the sales, whcih are expected to realise more than $100 million, were announced by Sotheby’s today.  The auctions will kick off on November 10 with an evening sale dedicated to a curated selection of Mrs Mellon’s fine art, which encapsulates her sophisticated eye and approach to collecting. The pieces on offer in the Masterworks auction span four centuries.  They are led by two incredible paintings by Mark Rothko estimated respectively at $20-30 million and $15-20 million. Sotheby’s will present Mrs. Mellon’s collection of Jewels & Objects of Vertu in a dedicated auction beginning on the evening of November 20 and featuring a spectacular Fancy Vivid Blue diamond estimated at $10-15 million. This sale is to continue the following morning. The series will culminate in a three-day Interiors sale from November 21-23,  with fine art, furniture, porcelain, silver, glassware, and decoration from the Mellons’ residences.  The more than 2,000 lots are drawn from the Mellons’ residences in the United States and abroad, and were acquired over a lifetime.

    Proceeds from the sales will benefit The Gerard B. Lambert Foundation, a charitable entity established by Mrs. Mellon in memory of her father. The Foundation supports horticultural and educational endeavours.  UPDATE:  THE white glove auction of a curated section of fine art from the collection totalled $158,757,250 on November 10.

    THE MARIA EDGEWORTH TABLE AT ADAMS SLANE CASTLE AUCTION

    Among many lots of interest at the upcoming James Adam Country House Collections auction at Slane Castle on October 12 and 13 is the Maria Edgeworth table. Maria Edgeworth (1768-1849) is the author of  Castle Rackrent, a satire on Anglo Irish landlords. She was one of the first realist writers in children’s  literature and a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe.

    This Italian early nineteenth century scagliola trompe l’oeil circular table top by Pietro Della Valle with signature acanthus leaf and anthemion ground is decorated in a naturalistic manner with four scattered engravings. It contains the sheet music for ‘St. Patricks Day in the morning’. There is an envelope addressed to ‘Miss Edgeworth, Edgeworthstown, Ireland’ from William Macbean and an extract from Sir Walter Scott’s General Preface to The Waverely Novels where he commends Miss Edgeworth’s literary accomplishments.  Dated to 1842 this rare curiosity is estimated at 40,000-60,000.

    FURNITURE FROM KENTSHIRE GALLERIES AT SOTHEBY’S NEW YORK

    More than 400 pieces of fine English and European furniture and decoration from the legendary Kentshire Galleries will come under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York on October 18.  Founded in 1940 by Benson Imberman Kentshire Galleries has an international reputation for exceptional antique furniture and works of art.  In 2007 the galleries opened at 700 Madison Avenue.  Their building on 12th Street has been sold and the works on offer are from there. Kentshire will remain focused on Madison Avenue and their galleries at Bergdorf Goodman specialising in jewellery and the decorative arts.  Here is a small selection:
