    MOSELY COLLECTION AT BANDON AUCTION

    The collection of the late silver dealer Peter Mosely, who operated out of Union Hall in west Cork, will come under the hammer at Hegarty’s in Bandon on July 20.  His collection of 18th and 19th century silver, paintings and furniture includes three high quality 19th century oils of the Cries of London after Francis Wheatley and a silver nutmeg grater from 1690.  More than 150 lots of silver will include miniature pieces, 18th century candlesticks, a 72 piece canteen, an 18th century coffee pot and a 1690 nutmeg grater.  There is a 20 piece Royal Worcester dinner service from 1916 all signed by James Stinton and collectibles in ivory, porcelain and glass. Antique furniture includes a Killarney davenport (8,000-10,000), a Regency Irish adjustable dumb waiter (3,000-5,000), a writing table almost certainly made by Gillows, a pair of serpentine cabinets and side tables.

    THE LONDONDERRY TABLE TOP AT CHRISTIE’S EXCEPTIONAL SALE

    The very first lot at Christies The Exceptional Sale at Christie’s in London on July 10 is The Londonderry Table Top.  The property of the late 9th Marquess of Londonderry is being sold by order of the executors. The Italian pietre dura table top dating to Rome c1800 is attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1830). Among several works by Raffaelli at The Hermitage in St. Petersburg are three table tops close in style to the Londonderry example.  Raffaelli’s reputation was already well established in Europe in the late 18th century.

    The table top was part of the furnishings for the magnificent interiors created by Charles Vane, later 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, for his London home on Park Lane.  He was British Ambassador to the Viennese Court from 1815 until his inheritance from his half brother, the 2nd Marquess and famed Foreign Secretary Lord Castlereagh, who committed suicide in 1822.  The table top, on a statuary white marble ground inlaid with agates, jaspers and carnelians of various types, is inlaid with three oystered agate planels and two large discs with rectangular borders. It is estimated at £150,000-250,000.

    GOBELINS TAPESTRIES AND RUSSIAN ICONS AT BANTRY HOUSE AUCTION

    Exquisite tapestries will be a feature of the sale of contents from Bantry House in west Cork.  The auction, by Edinburgh based Lyon and Turnbull, will be held in Bantry next October 21.  Viewing will be on the premises from October 17.   Formerly the seat of the Earls of Bantry, who lived here for over 300 years, the auction will include paintings, furniture and books collected by the 2nd Earl. These include 18th century tapestries from the workshops of Gobelin and Aubusson.  One of the two Gobelins panels is said to have hung in the Palace of Versailles .  There is a particularly beautiful rose-coloured set of Aubussons, said to have been made by order of Louis XV for Marie Antoinette on her marriage to the Dauphin of France.

    Lyon & Turnbull director Gavin Strang said:  “Lord Bantry’s collection has long been recognised as having great artistic and historical interest. As a young man, Viscount Berehaven, who later became  the second Earl, travelled extensively in Europe; visiting countries as far distant as Russia and Poland, seeking out the pieces which were to form his remarkable collection of furniture, tapestries and other works of art that are included in the sale.”

    Among the furniture in the sale is a Russian household shrine which contains 15th and 16th Century icons and an impressive pair of William Kent style console tables. The paintings in the collection include a pair of portraits from the studio of Allan Ramsay of George III and Queen Charlotte, presented by King George to the First Earl of Bantry on his elevation to the peerage. Funds raised will be used to secure the future of Bantry House.

    16TH CENTURY MARBLE TABLE TOP FROM ROME ON IRISH STAND

    An Italian specimen marble table top on an Irish George II giltwood stand attributed to Thomas Johnson is a highlight at The Exceptional Sale at Christie’s in London on July 10.  The table top was produced in Rome in the last 16th century. The stand, to a design by Thomas Darly, dates to c1756-58.  The rectangular table top is centred by an oval of red alabaster from Tunisia and there are a number of points of comparison with The Farnese Table, made in Rome in the 16th century and now at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. That table originally belonged to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, grandson of Pope Paul III.

    The Exceptional Sale provides collectors with an opportunity to acquire masterpieces of European furniture and decorative arts. It is highlighted by an Egyptian statue, Sekhemka and a bronze sculpture by Giambologna.

    RARE WORKS BY CHARLES HENRY COOK AT CORK AUCTION

    Rarities at Marshs 500 lot sale in Cork on June 14 include two paintings by the Victorian artist Charles Henry Cook.  Born in Bandon in 1830  he first exhibited at the RHA in 1846, moved to Bath in 1870 and died at Scarborough in 1906.  The paintings coming up now, from the collection of late Cork solicitor Charlie Hennessy, are The Cork Fiddle Player and The Musician.  Each one is estimated at 2,000-3,000.  The auction features art by Lady Kate Dobbin, Sylvia Cooke-Collis, Fergal O’Ryan, Maurice Desmond and Michael Gemmell as well as furniture and collectibles.  More information is available on Marshs website.
