    Marie Antoinette’s exquisite armchair from the Pavillon Belvedere is among the highlights at Christie’s sale of important French furniture in London on July 9.  The Taste of the Royal Court sale of furniture from a private collection comprises 22 examples of 18th century decorative arts.  The furniture in the sale was created for some of the most celebrated patrons of the 18th century: Queen Marie Antoinette, Duke Albert de Saxe-Teschen, Jean Baptiste de Machault d’Arnouville, Chancelier de France and the Prince de Conti, and subsequently entered such legendary collections as those of the Dukes of Hamilton, the Marquesses of Bath at Longleat and the Comtes de Vogüé at Vaux-le-Vicomte.

    The sale features work by master craftsmen like André-Charles Boulle, Charles Cressent and Adam Weisweiler.  A giltwood fauteuil en bergère supplied to Queen Marie Antoinette for her salon in the Pavillon Belvédère at the Petit Trianon, was part of the most expensive suite of seat furniture ever made for the Queen.  The only armchair from the set known to have survived is estimated at £300,000-500,000.   A bureau plat by Cressent, of which the only other known example is in the Louvre, is estimated at £1-1.5 million. Estimates range from £30,000 to £1.5 million and the collection is expected to make more than £6 million.

    ANTIQUE FURNITURE AT HEGARTY’S IN BANDON

    A c1890 French walnut side cabinet with ormolu mounts and brass gallery top is among the antique furniture highlights at Hegarty’s auction in Bandon, Co. Cork on June 26. The sale will include Part II of a Kinsale coin collection with examples from Charles II to modern times.  Highlights from the coin collection include a George III half crown from 1817 (200-300), a George V proof set of six coins from 1927  (200-400) and a George VI Coronation specimen set from 1937 (250-300).

    18TH CENTURY IRISH CLOCK AT MEALY’S SUMMER SALE

    An 18th century Irish walnut and parcel gilt long case clock by Blundell of Dublin is among the highlights at Mealy’s two day summer sale of 1,000 lots in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on May 26 and 27.  It is estimated at 24,000-28,000.  The sale will feature period furniture, decorative arts, vintage wines, garden effects and the rare book collection of the late Trinity Professor  and south Dublin TD John Kelly (1931-1991). Rarities include lot 903, a pair of Irish provincial flintlock pistols by Thomas Richards, Cork (7,000-9,000) and lot 585, a brick from the tomb of The Mahdi from the Omdurman campaign of (200-300). It is mounted on an oak block with a brass inscription from Capt. Sponge, March 13, 1899.  Lot 761 is a Killarney inlaid centre table (10,000-15,000) and lot 229 is a Killarney breakfast table (1,500-2,500).  The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

    UPDATE:  The sale realised 610,000 with over 86 per cent of lots sold.  Over 1,100 online bidders from 36 different countries via the-saleroom & invaluable battled with 280 telephone bidders and 150 commission bidders for the 1,000 lots. The main trend was that there were at least two, in many cases three or more bidders on almost all important lots.

    There will be memories of happier times on the Lusitania at Lynes and Lynes in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on May 23.  The centenary of the sinking of the Cunarder, with the loss of 1,198 lives in an act of war off the coast of Cork, was marked earlier this month. Among 300 lots at Lynes and Lynes is a breakfast menu from the vessel in June 1910 along with two dinner plates, a silk ribbon worn at the launch in 1906 and a boxed medal.  They will be sold as one lot with an estimate of just 100-200.  The catalogue for the sale is on line.     POET SOFAS BY FINN JUHL AT DUBLIN AUCTION

    A rare pair of Poet sofas by Danish designer Finn Juhl (1911-1989) – whose house north of Copenhagen marked the very beginning of open plan living – come up at de Veres design and art auction at Kildare St., Dublin on April 28. The sofas, regarded as a triumph of early Danish design, are from a private Irish collection.  He designed the sofas for the Juhl house at Charlottenlund north of Copenhagen.  The house was revolutionary and offered garden views from every room.  The sofas are estimated at 3,000-5,000.
    They were acquired in Copenhagen in 1950 by the vendors parents, who visited Denmark and Sweden with Ivan and Myrtle Allen.  The auction is on view today, tomorrow and Monday. Another lot is a pair of Progetti open armchairs by Giorgetti  (1,400-1,800).  The sale offers 20th century design furniture and about 40 lots of contemporary Irish art.     A FABERGE CIGARETTE CASE AT DURROW AUCTION

    A Faberge cigarette case, an early 20th century flying machine and an Elizabethan refectory table are among the lots on offer at Sheppards two day sale in Durrow, Co. Laois on April 28 and 29. The sale offers 1,300 lots of period furniture, fine art, decorative art, jewellery and garden statuary.  There are examples of Sevres porcelain, a collection of Louis Vuitton bags, a nude by Paul Sieffert, marble and stone garden statuary, musical instruments, carpets, rugs, jewellery and even a flying machine powered by a Villiers engine from the 1920’s.

    IRISH DINING TABLE SELLS FOR 70,000 AT COURTOWN AUCTION

    An impressive Irish Gillingtons style c1820 mahogany dining table sold for two times its top estimate at the James Adam sale of contents from Courtown House, Kilcock, Co. Kildare today  It made a hammer price of 70,000 over an estimate of 25,000-35,000. Attributed to Gillingtons of Dublin the table is designed to be used either as a single piece or as three separate tables.  It can be traced back to the original Courtown House contents auction in 1963.  The table is on quadruped pillar supports.   Gillingtons were a Dublin firm of cabinet makers in the early years of the 19th century. The table had been estimated at 25,000-35,000.
    Also from the dining room at Courtown House is a rare pair of George III mahogany dining room pedestals after a design by Gillows. sold for 20,300 and a pair of gilt torcheres by del Vecchio of Dublin sold for 28,000.  A gilt wood table attributed to the English maker Matthias Locke sold for 20,000.  The table was originally at Crton House.

    AN AUCTION OF CONTENTS FROM A CAHIR CONVENT

    In the 1990’s in Ireland sales of contents from convents and monasteries were almost commonplace. They are more unusual now but Charleville, Co. Cork based P.J. O’Gorman will offer contents from the Convent of Mercy in Cahir, Co. Tipperary on April 25 at noon.  The auction will take place at the convent, which has been in operation in this location since 1881. Antique furnitures in these sales tends to have been well maintained and in good condition.  Prime lots this time include a four door Regency breakfront secretaire bookcase and a mahogany pedestal desk.  There are Victorian two and three door bookcases, sets of Victorian dining chairs, chaises longues, Victorian sideboards, a walnut davenport, church pews, religious prints, statues, porcelain, glass, brass candlesticks and plated silver among more than 500 lots.
