A SPECIALLY COMMISSIONED DONEGAL CARPET AT MEALY’S

A large royal blue ground Donegal carpet inscribed with a harp, a gold link border and Celtic motifs comes up at Mealy’s one day sale in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on July 15. The New Ireland carpet, measuring 13.7 metros by 5 metres, was a complex commission by New Ireland Assurance for their Dublin office in 1964. The medallion detail is 64 knots per square inch as against 16 in the main body. The junction is imperceptible and the carpet is estimated at 15,000-25,000. In its heyday the Donegal Factory, at Killybegs, supplied carpets to the Oval Office and Buckingham Palace.

A late 19th century cut granite Irish fountain is estimated at 20,000-30,000. The sale features a monumental William IV side table estimated at 15,000-20,000 and a full sized billiard table among more than 600 lots. The catalogue is online.

ANOTHER SPITFIRE FLIES INTO THE RECORD BOOKS

Another Spitfire flew into the record books in London on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. It sold for a world record price of £3,106,500 to contribute to an extraordinary week at Christie’s. The Exceptional Sale and sales of Old Master and British Paintings, the collection of a Swiss Gentleman, Taste of the Royal Court with French furniture and works of art from a private collection and Old Master and British Drawings and Watercolours have achieved £48,451,788 so far. A total of 14 works sold for over £1 million.

Among the highlights are the unique last of its kind Mark 1 Spitfire; a 19^th century Luba female figure for a bowstand, which made £6,130,500, the second highest price at auction for an African work of art and the world record price at auction for a Luba figure; the most important oil by Richard Parkes Bonington to come to the market in a generation which made £2,490,500, a world record price for the artist at auction; and the only surviving armchair from the most expensive suite made for the French queen Marie Antoinette which made £1,762,500, a new world record price at auction for an 18^th century chair. The Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale takes place today.

CLARET FROM AN EAGLE ANYONE?

A claret jug in the form of an eagle is the opening lot at Mealy’s mid summer sale in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on July 15. It is estimated at 700-1,100 in a sale of more than 600 lots of fine and decorative art. Lot 34 is The Georgian Society records volumes 1, 2 and 3 printed in Dublin in 1911 and estimated at 1,000-1,500. A full size Victorian snooker table has an estimate of 1,500-2,500 and Ken O’Neill’s Elegance on a Beach has an estimate of 500 to 800. The catalogue is on line. Here is a taster menu.

WORKS FROM CASTLE HOWARD AT SOTHEBY’S NEXT WEEK

A REGENCY CARD TABLE FROM FOTA HOUSE

A Regency card table once at Fota House in Cork comes up at Fonsie Mealy’s two day Chatsworth Fine Art sale in Castlecomer on July 21 and 22. The rosewood card table has a figured fold over top with a large band of satinwood inlay. On a platform base with four outplayed scroll legs and it is complete with original decorated bass castors. It is estimated at 1,800-2,500.

In 1922 in Ireland the Civil War was raging and it was impossible to send silver to the Assay Office in Dublin. Silver produced by Egans in Cork between July and September of that year was stamped with a special mark. Around 80 pieces of what became known as Republican silver were made, and they are much prized by collectors. A Republican silver salver struck with a two masted ship and an single tower castle with the makers mark W.E. for William Egan at the auction is estimated at 8,000-10,000. Another unusual lot is an exhibition piece of furniture – a Killarney wood cabinet with an ebonised top crested by a lying stage. It is estimated at 10,000-15,000. The catalogue is online.

AN ABUNDANT SELECTION AT SHEPPARDS

SHELL BACK DESIGN CHAIRS AT DREWEATTS

A pair of George II c1735 shell back chairs estimated at £20,000-30,000 at the Dreweatts and Bloomsbury auction of fine furniture, works of art, clocks and carpets at Donnington Priory, Newbury, Berkshire on June 30 could go higher. The highly decorative chairs are attributed to Giles Grendey. He became an apprentice in 1709. By 1716 he had a workshop in Clerkenwell, London, from where he ran a successful export business. The distinct shell back design relates to a number of sets attributed to Grendey.

A George II carved gilt wood centre table in the same auction is possibly Irish c1735. The marble top table has a decorated frieze with each side centred with carved native American mask and scrolling foliage surround. The legs are headed by similar masks.

A RARE SET OF 12 IRISH CHAIRS AT LONDON’S OLYMPIA FAIR

A rare set of 12 Irish George II mahogany chairs is among many feature items at the John Carroll Antiques stand at the Olympia International Art and Antiques Fair which continues in London until June 28. It is highly unusual to find twelve chairs from the same set and this one is priced at £75,000. Mr. Carroll, who is maintaining an important Irish presence at this prestigious international fair with some fine antique furniture, is offering other noteworthy items such as an Irish 18th century carved gilt wood pier glass. The top has opposing squirrels above a central mask of Diana. There is a George II breakfront library bookcase and a marvellous George IV circular extending dining table. Here is a small sample:

SOME IRISH TREASURES AT MASTERPIECE IN LONDON

THERE is Irish treasure to be found at Masterpiece in London. As well as the Picasso’s, Turner’s and Lowry’s in abundance, the Chippendale pieces, the rarest of timepieces, the Sevres, bronzes and antiquities worth millions, the sixth edition of this prestigious fair offers a selection of antique Irish furniture, art, collectibles and silver to discriminating collectors with deep pockets. Masterpiece previews today at the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. Apter Fredericks are displaying the Leinster House cabinets in their current spring catalogue, priced at £325,000 (see post on antiquesandartireland.com for June 3). A first 1922 edition of Ulysses is priced at £250,000 at Peter Harrington. Signed by James Joyce it is from the first hundred copies printed which are always the most valuable. The Earl of Drogheda’s silver epergne centerpiece by Robert Calderwood is priced at £85,000 at Koopman Rare Art. Philip Mould has a recently discovered works by Sir John Lavery at £275,000. A thick varnish was removed and the artist had painted out his own signature when he returned at a later date to enhance it. It has now been authenticated. Masterpiece continues until July 1.
