This 18th century Irish side table sold for £19,500 today.
An 18th century carved mahogany side table, described by Stockport auctioneers Capes Dunn as “probably Irish” sold for a hammer price of £19,500 against an estimate of £300-500 today.
The table has a rounded rectangular top above a cross grain moulded frieze, on acanthus capped straight cabriole legs with claw and ball frieze, tied by a deep apron.
The front is carved with leaves from a meandering vine and centred by a grotesque mask.
A pair of French designed polished steel and leather standard lamps and a 19th century Italian faience miniature violin are among the highlights at Sheppards first ever attic sale in Durrow on September 1. The auction of more than 600 lots from the attics, stables and storerooms of important clients offers collectors at all levels a chance to acquire one of a kind treasures. Estimates are reasonable. A magnificent companion pair to the Blake of London commodes in the Frick Collection will come up at Sotheby’s in New York on October 15. The estimate is $300,000-500,000. Sotheby’s auctions of 19th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts in New York will feature both a dedicated single-owner sale from a distinguished Asian collection and a various owners auction. The collection was formed over 50 years with the help of renowned dealers in London and Paris. There are 18th and 19th century pieces based on royal and aristocratic models of the ancien regime as well as creations from Francois Linke and Leon Message.

A carved oak St. Catherine formerly in the collection of William Randolph Hearst is among the lots from the estate of German American actress Luise Rainer (1910-2014) to be offered by Juliens Auctions in Beverly Hills on October 1. It is estimated at $3,000-5,000. Once known as the new Garbo, Luise Rainer was the first actress to win back-to-back Academy Awards, the first in 1936 for her performance as Anna Held in The Great Ziegfeld and the second in 1937 for her performance as O-Lan in The Good Earth. Her collection features European antiques, Old Master and Contemporary art, career memorabilia, furniture and personal effects from her longtime home in London’s Eaton Square.

A pair of French demi-lune tables from the estate of Rathcormac, Co. Cork collector Tim Arnold will highlight Woodwards summer sale on July 29. The late Mr. Arnold had taken ownership of a disused church in the village last year with the intention of creating a heritage centre. Furniture and effects from the church are included in the auction. The tables are estimated at 2,500-4,000. The catalogue is online and the auction will be broadcast live on the internet.

An exhibition piece of Killarney furniture surmounted by an ebonised cabinet.
A rare Killarney collectors cabinet sold for a hammer price of 34,000 at Fonsie Mealy’s sale in Castlecomer today. The cabinet, in arbutus, yew and bog oak with an ebonised rectangular top, had been estimated at 10,000-15,000. Surmounted by a lying stag the piece is rare, and was almost certainly made as an exhibition piece for an important show or fair in Victorian times. The side panels are carved in relief with a design of round towers, high crosses and harps. The cupboard doors are decorated with views of Muckross Abbey and Ross Castle. The top opens to reveal a set of 12 short drawers with shamrock handles, the lower piece opens to four long drawers each inlaid with views of Killarney.
This was the top lot in an auction which brought in 610,000 on the hammer.
