    This large oak seven door bookcase is one of a number of fine pieces of furniture by the renowned Dublin makers Robert Strahan from The Mercy Convent, Balloonagh, Tralee, Co. Kerry which auctioneer Denis Lynes will auction at the convent on November 14.  The firm of Robert Strahan was founded in 1776 at Chancery Lane in Dublin.

    The sisters acquired it in the 1920’s at the auction of the Collis-Sandes estate at the Gothic Revival Oakpark House nearby. The estimate on the piece is 5,000-10,000. The entire contents of the Mercy Convent at Rosscarbery have been added to the  Lynes and Lynes sale.

    UPDATE: The auction was a sellout and the bookcase made 8,000.

    THE BERNHEIMER COLLECTION AT SOTHEBY’S

    A two day sale of The Bernheimer Collection will be held at Sotheby’s in London on November 24 and 25. The 539 lots to be offered comprise both treasures from the Bernheimer personal collection and stock from the family business, including objects from Bernheimer Palais, a six-storey high palace on Munich’s Lenbachplatz built by the family’s patriarch Lehmann Bernheimer in 1889. Spanning various collecting categories, including furniture, painting, sculpture, porcelain, and wine, these artworks have been housed mainly in Burg Marquartstein, an 11th-century castle in Bavaria that Konrad Bernheimer especially bought in 1987. As he is about to hand over to the next generation, the celebrated Old Master dealer Konrad Berheimer has decided to sell Burg Marquartstein and part with the collection.

    In a separate development Bernheimer, who is chairman of the 255 year old Colnaghi firm in London, has just announced a merger with London and Madrid based fine art dealers Coll & Cortés.  Colnaghi will offer European Old Master paintings, sculptures and drawings, as well as art from the Spanish-speaking world. A century after the firm moved from Pall Mall to Mayfair, Colnaghi will return to St. James’s in 2016, moving from Old Bond Street to a larger, custom-built gallery where they will present international Old Master paintings, sculptures and drawings in a fresh context suited to the 21st century.

    The Bernheimer business started with a tiny market stall in Munich in the mid-19th century and swiftly grew into the most illustrious antique and interior decoration emporium in the world. Following their deportation to Dachau and the expropriation of the business by the Nazis, part of the family emigrated to Venezuela. They returned after the war to reinvent the business which soon became famous as the “Bloomingdales for Antiques”. The family tradition continues today.

    Mario Tavella, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby’s Europe and Head of House Sales and Single Owner Collections, said: “This collection reflects the erudite quest of four generations of art dealers for discovering the best art. It is a huge honour to have been entrusted with this sale”.

    IRISH MID 18TH CENTURY ARMCHAIRS AT OLYMPIA FAIR

    The renowned London antique expert Thomas Woodham-Smith – whose grandmother Cecil Woodham-Smith was author of The Great Hunger, the seminal work on the Irish famine – will bring a pair of mid 18th century Irish carved mahogany armchairs to the 25th Winter Art and Antiques Fair at Olympia.

    The Fair runs from November 2-8 and this year the organizers have teamed up with the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose experts will lecture on subjects as diverse as Historic Wallpaper, Art Deco travel and artist’s houses of the late 19th and early 20th century.  The fair is run in association with both of the UK’s top antique trade associations, BADA and LAPADA.

    Priced at £65,000 the armchairs have excellent colour and patination.  There is a pierced splat back and deeply curved arms.  The shell headed cabriole legs are joined by shaped stretchers terminating in square paw feet.]

    STRONG SELECTION AT HEGARTY’S IN BANDON

    A pair of cast iron cannons and an 18th century Irish long case clock are among the strong selection at Hegarty’s evening auction in Bandon on October 27.  The auction features an Irish 18th century pier mirror once owned by Mariga Guinness, a 19th century Irish library centre table (2,500-3,500) and an Irish Regency mahogany card table (2,000-3,000).  Estimates for six Persian wool rugs vary from 800 to 5,000 and a 1689 William and Mary half crown has an estimate of 300-400.  The catalogue is online.     DIVERSE RANGE AT MEALY’S AUTUMN SALES IN CASTLECOMER

    At Mealy’s autumn auction in Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny on October 20 and 21 punters can take their chance on items as diverse as a c1795 Irish flintlock man stopper pistol, a c1710 Queen Anne walnut bureau, an Irish cottage interior by Edward Fitzpatrick or a Cheval Blanc 1970 St. Emilion grand cru classe.  This sale includes a private Irish collection of wine, vintage port, champagne and whisky.

    IRISH FURNITURE A FEATURE AT SLANE CASTLE SALE

    IRISH furniture features strongly at the James Adam sale at Slane Castle on October 13 at 11.30 am.  There is an architectural neo-classical mirror made by the Booker Brothers of Dublin 40,000-60,000) and Dublin cabinet makers Mack, Williams and Gibton; Strahan and Company and Anthony Morgan of Henry St. are all represented with library and dining tables, rent tables and cellarettes.
    A small collection of Killarney work includes an oversized davenport desk (7,000-10,000) and a large circular breakfast table (15,000-20,000). There is a Queen Anne long case clock by Francis Mansfield of Cork (6,000-10,000), a George II ebonised bracket clock by Henderson (2,000-4,000) and ancient oak furniture from the Duke of Abercorn and Belle Isle, Co. Fermanagh.
    The catalogue cover lot is a neo-classical portrait of a lady attributed to Matthew William Peters (10,000-15,000).  There is art by Nathanial Hone the Elder, Robert Hunter, James Arthur O’Connor, William Sadler, Jacob Roos, Stephen Catterson Smith and  Martin Cregan’s Portrait of Arthur Guinness II is estimated at 10,000-15,000.

    Collectibles include a finely engraved pale jade Chinese seal, a Grand Master’s chair from Orange Lodge number 579 (2,000-3,000) and an Italian carved marble group Putti Musicanti from the studio of Florence scuptor Ferdinando Vichi (15,000-25,000).     Choice antique items are reasonably estimated at the Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork on October 10.  An antique mahogany shop display cabinet from Macroom – a once off lot if ever there was one – has an estimate of 1,000-1,500.  The value to be had in furniture right now is underlined by items such as a Victorian inlaid walnut work box with swivel top complete with chess board and backgammon board estimated at just 500-700, a Victorian gilt over mantle (400-600) and a Cork tray back sideboard (300-500).  The catalogue is online.

    A 115,000 CLOCK AT FONSIE MEALY’S FURNESS AUCTION

    The Francis Johnston Speaker Clock – The Irish Houses of Parliament Speaker’s Clock sold for 115,000 at hammer.

    The Irish Houses of Parliament Speakers clock sold for a hammer price of 115,000 over a top estimate of 90,000 at Fonsie Mealy’s sale of Furness – home to Patrick Guinness – in Co. Kildare.  It was purchased by an undisclosed private buyer but the auctioneers did say that it is likely to go on public display at some stage.  Negotiations are underway today for some of the unsold lots, including Daniel Maclise’s Spirit of Justice estimated at 50,000-70,000. (Update – this changed hands after the sale for 50,000 and it will stay in Ireland).

    It was a hugely successful auction where buyers vied for a wide variety of historic lots. A magnificent carved over mantle mirror purchased at the Carton House sale in 1943 made a within estimate hammer price of 40,000.  A c1620 Paris tapestry sold for 28,000 at hammer and a rare early 19th century full size road coach made an above estimate 32,000.  This is the vehicle thought to have conveyed George IV to a tryst with Lady Conyngham at Slane Castle. A rare pair of large coopered metal bound stout barrels inscribed Guinness sold for 2,300.

    Kildare is horse country and horses rocked at this sale.  An Edwardian carved and painted rocking horse made 6,600 and a Victorian rocking horse made 3,000.  The earliest printed plan of Dublin by Charles Brooking in 1728 made 14,000 and an 1818 leather bound inventory of Carton House and offices with 153 rooms made a hammer price of 10,000.  A c1760 Irish mahogany architect’s table from Castletown House sold for 6,500.

    The sale realised 860,000 at hammer.
