The hugely interesting selection at the Christmas sale at Mealy’s in Castlecomer on December 14 includes an Irish Labour Party and Trades Union Congress investigation with evidence from over 70 witnesses on Who Burnt Cork City published in 1921. There is antique furniture and silver, a circular Lalique bowl, a Louis Vuitton lady’s travelling vanity case and a wine and port section with which to celebrate the season in considerable style. This pietre dure table top sold for a record £3.5 million.
A world record price for a hard stone inlaid table top was established at Sotheby’s in London today when the Grimani table top sold for £3,509,000. There were two. Made in Florence circa 1600-1620 and with a provenance that is fully documented since 1623 the first sold for £3,509,000. Five bidders competed in a 10-minute bidding battle. The high estimate was £600,000. It is thought that this pietre dure top with the arms and symbols of the Grimani Family was probably a gift from a member of the Medici family.
No fewer than four bidders vied for the second table top which sold to a private collector for £1,625,000 – the second highest price for an inlaid Roman table top sold at auction with a top estimate of £500,000. From the last quarter of the 16th century it was purchased by or given to a member of the Grimani family, in all likelihood Doge Marino Grimani (1532 – 1605) whilst in Rome in 1585 and 1592.

A William IV over mantle from the postponed Matthews sale at Charleville Castle (400-700).
The antique and collectors auction scheduled to take place at Charleville Castle, Tullamore, Co. Offaly on December 6 has been postponed for one week to December 13. As Storm Desmond continued to batter Ireland today Matthews Auctioneers of Oldcastle took a last minute decision to postpone the sale.
It will be held instead on Sunday, December 13. The venue is a remarkably original and unrestored castle, The catalogue, which includes property from an unnamed charitable trust and props decommissioned from Ardmore Studios, Bray, Co. Wicklow, lists 784 lots.

There are contrasting styles of antique and contemporary living at the Lynes and Lynes sale in Carrigtwohill on December 5. As well as contents from various Presentation convents in County Cork the auction will include some contemporary offerings from other clients. There is an Irish long case clock, garden seats, linen, china including a Worcester part dinner service, glass and kitchen equipment from various convents as well as French bar and dining room furniture purchased in Paris in the 1970’s from a client in Glengarriffe. Among these is a Romeo Rego style decorative French sideboard, Italian leather settees, a Romeo Rego style crescent shaped French bar with four stools and a Willy Rizzo style black and steel circular revolving cocktail table. The c1880 enamel and silver cups by Hermann Boehm.
Two polychrome painted enamel and silver cups sold for a hammer price of 24,000, three times the top estimate, at Sheppards sale in Durrow on December 1. They are by Hermann Boehm, a foremost Viennese jeweller regarded as the greatest Austrian practitioner of the Revivalist goldsmiths work.
He used local talents in painted enamels and hard stone to create a new Renaissance objects of splendour for international clients. These date to around 1889. Each one is 17 inches high. The estimate on the lot was 5,000-8,000.
This c1790 Chippendale breakfront bookcase sold for 18,000.

There is a wide ranging choice among more than 800 lots at Sheppards sale in Durrow on December 1. One of the more expensively estimated lots is an Irish George III white marble and scagliola chimney piece in the manner of Pietro Bossi (30,000-50,000). There is antique furniture, lighting, rugs, art, Chinese porcelain, decorative items and clocks in a sale which includes jewellery from the collection of the Hon. Doreen O’Brien (1888-1960), daughter of the 14th Baron of Inchoquin. Among these is a diamond tiara estimated at 6,000-9,000. Lot 601 in this auction is a prime Irish George II walnut settee c1745 estimated at 8,000-12,000. The catalogue is online.

This Killarney games table comes up at RJ Keighery’s sale in Waterford on November 30. Distinctive and inlaid with local scenes Killarney made furniture in arbutus wood is always prized by collectors of Irish antique furniture. This one is estimated at 4,000-6,000.
The auction will include an Asprey two handled silver tray with gilt edges and six sweet dishes estimated at 6,000-8,000. Among the other lots of interest is a Victorian long case clock with brass dial by Sharp, Dublin estimated at 1,500-2,000.
Keighery’s City Auction Rooms in Waterford will conduct Monday’s sale live on the internet for the first time, becoming part of the growing digital trend among Irish auctioneers.

The first five lots at Dolan’s Limerick art and antiques auction on November 22 are 19th century Irish topographical photographs from the Lawrence Collection. Featuring counties Kerry, Down, Monaghan and various locations from Bray Head to the Corkscrew Road at Lisdoonvarna each volume is estimated at 350-450. There is work by a diverse range of artists from Kenneth Webb and Arthur Maderson to Mark O’Neill and Markey Robinson as well as some silver, furniture, comics and boxing memorabilia. An unusual selection of furniture in the Gothic manner by renowned Dublin makers Robert Strahan comes up at auction in Tralee on November 14.
Lynes and Lynes will offer contents from The Mercy Convent, Balloonagh, Tralee. The convent, located in a fine cut stone building in the Pugin manner, opened in 1858 at around the same time as nearby Oakpark House, a jewel of the Irish Gothic Revival, was built. Convent furniture in the library and back parlour was acquired at auction in the 1920’s from Oakpark House when the Collis-Sandes family sold up.
The Strahan furniture is labelled and stamped and was designed specifically for Oakpark House. A large seven door breakfront bookcase c1860 (5,000-10,000) is complete with the Collis-Sandes crest. An oak dining table with five spare leaves (3,000-5,000) which can seat up to 24 has features which match this bookcase and is stamped by Strahan. The oak sideboard by Strahan (1,000-2,000) also carries the family crest and there is a fine oak library table (1,500-2,000). There are no fewer than eight oak refectory tables. There are fender, clocks, slide lanterns, garden furniture, porcelain, glass and kitchen equipment among more than 500 lots. The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:
