THOMAS HART BENTON AT OLYMPIA FAIR IN LONDON

    Monday, May 11th, 2015

Masterpieces by great American painters of the Dust Bowl era from the Rex Sinquefield collection feature as the special guest exhibition at the 43rd Olympia Art and Antiques Fair in London from June 18-28.  Brought to the UK for public exhibition for the first time outside the US, the selection will include paintings and works on paper from seminal artists from American history, including Thomas Hart Benton, Joe Jones, John Atherton, John Rogers Cox and Steuart Curry.  Organisers are confident that the work of these Depression era American masters will prove a revelation to London audiences.

Highlights include a remarkable self-portrait by Thomas Hart Benton previously featured on the cover of Time Magazine; the magazine declared him ‘America’s Regionalist’ in recognition of his extraordinary portrayals of the American Mid-West. Another masterpiece from Benton,  ‘Flood Disaster’ portrays the aftermath of a devastating flood that struck the western half of the state in 1951.   Here is a sample.

A 9th CENTURY ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT AT TEFAF

    Friday, March 13th, 2015

FROM a 9th century illustrated manuscript to Van Gogh and Anselm Kiefer there is much to interest serious and wealthy collectors and curators at TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) Maastricht which opens today and runs until March 22.  Over the next ten days the art world will meet at Maastricht. There is huge interest in this fair of fairs with 275 leading dealers from around the world.  Here is a small sample of what is on offer.

One of the greatest objects at the 2015 Fair is The Liesborn Gospels, which is being shown by Les Enluminures (stand.   Described as one of the most valuable manuscripts of the gospel in private hands, this copy, which is in almost perfect condition, has an impeccable, virtually unbroken line of provenance and an asking price $6.5 million

A remarkable watercolour in pristine condition, Le Moulin d’Alphonse Daudet à Fontvieille, June 1888, by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), which has not been seen in public for decades forms the highlight of Dickinson’s stand.

A monumental oil and mixed media work on canvas entitled Merkaba, 2004 by Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945)  occupies the rear wall of Beck & Eggeling’s stand.  One of Andy Warhol’s most seminal images Car Crash, a screen print, 1978, is a highlight on the stand of Galerie Bastian while Galerie Boulakia is exhibiting a large-scale acrylic, oilstick and xerox work entitled Red Joy by Jean-Michel Basquiat from 1984.

THE EARLIEST KNOWN DEPICTION OF IRISH ROAD BOWLING?

    Wednesday, March 4th, 2015
Is this painting the earliest known depiction of Irish road bowling?

Is this painting the earliest known depiction of Irish road bowling?

What is billed as the earliest known painting of Irish road bowling will be offered at the Chelsea Antiques Fair in London.  Bagshawe Fine Art will display the work at the fair at Chelsea Town Hall from March 18 to March 22. Art dealer Nicholas Bagshawe said: “It is not yet totally certain who the artist of this picture is, but we are becoming increasingly convinced that it is the work of Nathanial Grogan  junior (c1765-1820). The work is dateable from the style of painting and the costumes worn to 1790-1800.  Bowling, which is possibly of Dutch origin, has been played in Ireland since the 17th century and is still played today on the country roads of counties Cork and Armagh.

According to Dr. Fintan Lane, the author of “Long Bullets – A History of Irish Road Bowling”, this is the earliest known depiction of the sport.  Up to now the earliest known painting of bowling was Daniel MacDonald’s Bowling Match at Castlemary which dates to 1842 and is in the collection of the Crawford Gallery in Cork.  Nicholas Bagshawe believes the Grogans, both senior and junior, are the most likely candidates for this work. “As art historians start to differentiate their work more accurately it seems that Nathanial Grogan senior, while a better known and seemingly more prolific artist, might not have been capable of painting a large front of stage figure with quite the fluency shown here. It is more likely that we are looking at the work of his son”.  Grogan junior is also known to have exhibited a painting during his lifetime called The Bowl Players.
