The renowned London antique expert Thomas Woodham-Smith – whose grandmother Cecil Woodham-Smith was author of The Great Hunger, the seminal work on the Irish famine – will bring a pair of mid 18th century Irish carved mahogany armchairs to the 25th Winter Art and Antiques Fair at Olympia.

The Fair runs from November 2-8 and this year the organizers have teamed up with the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose experts will lecture on subjects as diverse as Historic Wallpaper, Art Deco travel and artist’s houses of the late 19th and early 20th century.  The fair is run in association with both of the UK’s top antique trade associations, BADA and LAPADA.

Priced at £65,000 the armchairs have excellent colour and patination.  There is a pierced splat back and deeply curved arms.  The shell headed cabriole legs are joined by shaped stretchers terminating in square paw feet.]

THE UPCOMING 50TH IRISH ANTIQUE DEALERS FAIR

    Monday, September 21st, 2015

The 50th Irish Antique Dealers Fair (IADA) runs at the RDS, Dublin from September 24-27.  A celebratory preview night will be opened by Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys on September 24 and the Fair proper runs from September 25-27.  BBC Antique Roadshow personalities Judith Miller and Mark Hill head a packed programme organised to celebrate the golden jubilee of a fair that combines contemporary design history with the best of Irish antiques. The Fair was founded by Dublin entrepreneur Louis O’Sullivan at a time when most antiques were being exported from the country.

“For the past 50 years, people have been attending the fair to discover something different, that magical piece that can make a home,” said George Stacpoole, IADA chairman. He has been present at every event so far. “We have a carefully selected blend of antique and contemporary exhibitors, allowing all ages to focus on the unique yet affordable design that appeals to them.”

As usual there is a lecture series which covers topics such as Irish Country House Sales, changing trends in jewellery, Irish furniture, fakes and fences, what makes diamonds sparkle and the cult of mourning jewellery in the Georgian era. Ib Jorgenson will give a presentation on his life and times as a fashion designer and art dealer.  Here is a small selection:

PAVILION OF ART AND DESIGN IN LONDON

    Friday, August 7th, 2015

A collection of small-scale European sculptures from antiquity to the modern period will be shown by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art at the Pavilion of Art & Design in Berkeley Square, London, from October 14-18 October.  Carefully chosen to appeal to the collectors and enthusiasts of 20th century design and arts that PAD attracts, the works in bronze, marble, wood and a variety of media will be exhibited as a contemporary collector’s cabinet in a modernist-style room setting.

Highlights include a fine pair of 18th century ivory statuettes of Flemish Baroque painters Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641), by James Francis Verskovis (d.1768); an exquisite pair of bronze figures of Mars and Venus by the French sculptor Sebastien Slodtz (1655-1726) and a striking modern work of a female figure by Peter King (1928-1957), a prolific artist, peer of Caro and Frink, exceptional sculptor and assistant to Henry Moore.

“We are excited to be exhibiting at PAD London for the first time. We believe it is important to reach out to new collectors by presenting Master sculpture in an environment with which they are more familiar,”said Dino Tomasso, gallery Director. “We’ve designed a modernist-style collector’s cabinet, very different to our classically-inspired stands at fairs such as TEFAF and Masterpiece.”

    MASTERPIECE FAIR GENERATES GLOBAL INTEREST

    Saturday, May 30th, 2015

The 6th edition of Masterpiece, the international cross collecting fair for art, antiques and design, takes place at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, London from June 25 to July 1 with a preview on June 24. The fair offers museum quality works with superb provenance from 150 galleries worldwide.

Last year the art market generated over half a billion pounds worth of art sales during the week of Masterpiece. This success can, in part, be attributed to the groundswell of interest and purchases from world-renowned institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Rijksmuseum, MoMA, British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, The Getty and Tate, to name a few. The Royal Bank of Canada is principal sponsor  and in 2015 the fair welcomes the Wallace Collection, the National Portrait Gallery, The Courtauld Institute of Art and Sir John Soane’s Museum as its official cultural partners.  Here is a small selection from this years offerings:
