A DATE CHANGE FOR THE OLYMPIA FAIR

    Monday, February 2nd, 2015

This is art sales week fortnight in London but looking forward to June the Olympia International Art and Antiques Fair has announced a date change. Now in its 43rd year the UK’s largest fair which was established in 1972 will run at the later dates of June 18-28 to coincide with other important cultural events in London. Organisers say the date change consolidates London’s influential position as the hub of the global art world during late June. Olympia’s special mix of 170 leading dealers from around the world offers something for all levels, with prices from £100 to £1 million.

MEET BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE AT MAASTRICHT

Left: Prince Henry Benedict Stuart 1725-1807 and Right: Prince Charles Edward Stuart 1720-1788
    by Jean-Etienne Liotard c.1736-8.

A pair of portrait miniatures of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and Prince Henry Benedict Stuart will highlight Tomasso Brothers stand at The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) at Maastricht from March 13-22.  Last in line as Stuart kings of Scotland Bonnie Prince Charlie (on the right in the image)  led  the final Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 that was to end in defeat at Culloden.

The miniatures of the brothers are by Jean Etienne Liotard, a highly esteemed portrait miniaturist. When in Rome between 1736-38 he was commissioned by the “Old Pretender” James Edward Stuart (1688-1766) to paint portraits of his young sons, Princes Charles and Henry.  Powerful imagery of the Stuart royal family in the form of portrait miniatures, engravings and prints was despatched throughout Europe to raise funds for the Jacobite cause to reclaim the throne of England. These may have been part of a group sent to Vienna to Empress Elizabeth, wife of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI. A miniature of Prince Charles is also recorded as having been sent to Dorotea, Dowager Duchess of Parma and mother of the Queen of Spain.

Tomasso Brothers Fine Art is based at Bardon Hall in Leeds. A second gallery was opened at St. James’s, London in 2013.  Significant sales have been made to museums including The Bode Museum, Berlin; the Liechtenstein Collection; the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna; the Metropolitan Museum, New York; the Yale Centre for British Art and the Art Institute, Chicago. The miniatures are priced at 275,000 euro.

A PAIR RE-UNITED FOR THE ARMORY SHOW

King William III & Queen Mary II Unique Dutch Delftware Bouquetières

King William III & Queen Mary II
    Unique Dutch Delftware Bouquetières

This c1690 pair of bouquetieres or flower holders which Aronson of Amstersdam will highlight at New York’s Winter Antiques Show from January 23 to February 1 depict King William III and Queen Mary II, who acceded to the English throne in 1689.  The pair will be exhibited together for the first time at America’s most prestigious antiques show at the Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan.   The figures are attributed to The Greek A Factory, where Queen Mary ordered many magnificent pieces of Delft for Hampton Court Palace. The figure of William is marked AK for Adrianus Kocx.

Robert Aronson, who heads the 134 year old family firm specialising in Dutch delftware, acquired the lady figure in February 2014 and brought it to TEFAF at Maastricht. There were several interested parties, but a sale did not materialise. In May the family happened across an auction catalogue of a sale several hours south of Paris and when they requested photographs an image of the male figure arrived. “It rendered me speechless. I was looking at what seemed to be a figure almost identical to Mary – but the male version”.  He instructed his assistant Lisa to take a long weekend with her boyfriend in the middle of France and to return home with the figure at any price. He further instructed her that if anyone asked, she was to say she was interested in the figure because it reminded her of her grandmother.  The mission was successful and provenance has since shown that the figures had been made as a pair, but were separated in the division of a will. Mr. Aronson has described it as the greatest adventure of his first 25 years in the art business.
