    The top lot at Sotheby’s Irish sale in London was Mending Nets, Aran by Gerard Dillon. It sold to an American buyer for £191,000 over a top estimate of  £150 ,000. The work sold at James Adam in Dublin for 80,000 euro six years ago.  A total of 65% of lots on offer found buyers.  The Cello Player by Sir John Lavery made £112,500 but Mary Borden and her family by the same artist, estimated at £150,000-250,000 failed to find a buyer.

    Charlie Minter of Sotheby’s said this years sale made £1.8 million.  This was ahead of the low estimate and built on the success of Sotheby’s Irish sale last year.  Auction records were set for Patrick Scott, Gottfried Helnwein, Rita Duffy and for a work on paper by Sean Keating.  Water Lillies by Yeats was unsold at auction, but changed hands privately immediately after the sale.

    MAJOR JEAN DUBUFFET WORK TO HIGHLIGHT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK AUCTION

    dubuffetJean Dubuffet’s Les Grandes Artères, 1961 will highlight Christie’s November 15 evening sale of Post-War and Contemporary Art in New York. The  masterful canvas from Dubuffet’s  Paris Circus series is estimated at $15-20 million. Many examples from the Paris Circus series are housed in international collections. These include the Tate Gallery, London; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Les Grandes Artères has been in the same private American collection since 1964, and has not appeared publically since 1973, when it was featured in the Guggenheim’s Dubuffet retrospective.

    Brett Gorvy, Chairman and International Head of Post-War and Contemporary Art, remarked: “Les Grandes Artères is an extraordinarily vibrant and complex canvas that encapsulates the vitality of Paris, and the dynamism of city life. The detail with which he depicts each of his figures gives them their own individual character and the line-up of glamorous cars shows what a cosmopolitan city Paris had become—a scene which Dubuffet captures this with particular skill and spirit. We are particularly pleased to be bringing this work to auction on the heels of a pinnacle year for Dubuffet, which included a range of important international exhibitions of his work. With a retrospective at the Fondation Beyeler, a monographic show at the Acquavella Gallery in Manhattan, and an installation of his monumental sculpture, Welcome Parade, in front of New York’s historic Seagram Building, it is clear that the global interest in Dubuffet has never been stronger.”

    CONTEMPORARY ART AUCTION FOR PALLAS PROJECTS/STUDIOS

    Alice Maher, Sean Scully, Brian Maguire, Isabel Nolan and Paddy Graham are among the artists featured in the 20th anniversary auction in aid of Pallas Projects/Studios. The sale will be held on September 15 at 7 p.m. in the Irish Georgian Society’s City Assembly House, South William St. in Dublin. Located at The Coombe Pallas Projects/Studios (founded 1996) is a not-for-profit artist-run organisation dedicated to the facilitation of artistic production and discourse, via the provision of affordable artists studios in Dublin’s city centre, and curated projects.  Auctioneers Whyte’s say the event promises to be a gala affair. Guide prices range from 40 to 5,000.

    With the backdrop of an unwillingness of developers to allow for the provision of a long-term cultural aspect to the regeneration of city-centre areas throughout the boom years, PP/S has been searching, inhabiting, and fighting to maintain as many as eight semi-permanent locations since 1996, and many more temporary offsite exhibition/project scenarios. These have included a four-year exhibition programme in a semi-derelict block of council flats, a white cube space in a former milking parlour, and collaborative projects with and in Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane; the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Dublin Docklands; Fire Station Artists’ Studios; The Red Stables; The Model, Sligo; Catalyst Arts, Belfast; 126, Galway; The Black Mariah, Cork; Project 304, Bangkok; Sub-Urban Video Lounge, Rotterdam; Auto Italia South East, London and Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne.

    PAINTING GIFTED BY WILLIAM CROZIER TO MUSIC THEATRE WALES

    A painting gifted by artist William Crozier (1930-2011) to contemporary opera company Music Theatre Wales comes up at Sotheby’s Irish sale in London on September 13.  The artist created Letters of a Love Betrayed in 2009 in response to the world premier of Eleanor Alberga’s opera of the same name. This was in turn based on a short story by Isabel Allende. Crozier, an opera lover, gifted the canvas so that Music Theatre Wales could benefit from its sale at auction.

    He told the artistic director of Music Theatre Wales, Michael McCarthy: “This is the first picture I have ever painted which does not have its origin in something I have seen. The image is borrowed from a similar scorching landscape I knew when I lived in the mountains of Andalusia. I was led, too, by the scenario of the opera and the imaginary landscapes of Allende and other Latin American novelists and poets – Marquez and Neruda chief among them”. The work is estimated at £15,000-20,000.

    CANTON ENAMEL JARDINIERE MAKES 56,000 AT JAMES ADAM

    An 18th/19th century Canton enamel and stained ivory jardiniere made a hammer price of 56,000 over a top estimate of 2,000 at the James Adam sale of the Alton Collection in Dublin this week.  It was the top lot in a sale where 80% of lots on offer found buyers.

    A c1742 Meissen group of the indiscreet harlequin modelled by J.J. Kandler sold for 38,000 at hammer over a top estimate of 35,000. A bronze and ivory figure, the turbaned dancer by Paul Philippe (1870-1930) made 32,000 over a top estimate of 5,000. A c1616 leaf from a Mughal manuscript made 17,000 and a Cretan 17th century painted timber icon made 15,000. A pair of oils on canvas of The Battle of the Nile on August 1, 1798  in the style of Thomas Luny (1759-1837) sold for 14,000 and a set of four Irish silver candlesticks Dublin c1760 made 13,500.

    MARILYN’S SKIN TIGHT DRESS TO TOUR TO KILDARE

    The skin tight flesh coloured dress worn by Marilyn Monroe as she sang “Happy Birthday Mr. President” to JFK  is to be displayed at the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons in Ireland before being sold by Julien’s Auctions on November 17.  The custom made Jean Louis creation was so tight fitting that Marilyn had to be sewn into it at the last moment. It will be displayed on the mannequin designed to match her body measurement.

    On Saturday, May 19, 1962, at a Democratic fundraiser and early 45th birthday celebration, President John F. Kennedy took his seat in Madison Square Garden at what was to become one of the most iconic moments in entertainment and political history. In front of 15,000 guests, many of them celebrities, actor Peter Lawford made an introduction that would change the course of pop culture and Presidential folklore forever. Under a bright spotlight Marilyn Monroe walked on stage and peeled away her white ermine fur coat, revealing the sheer dress that sparkled with over 2,500 handstitched crystals. Her intimate tone and projection of the words Mr. President stunned the audience. Jacqueline Kennedy was not present. The song lasted just 30 seconds. Sadly this was one of Marilyn’s last public appearances and the last time they met. She died three months later, the president was assassinated the following year.

    Prior to the auction, the “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress will go on tour. It is to be shown at MANA Contemporary in New Jersey as part of the Exhibition “Marilyn: Character Not Image” followed by the Newbridge Silverware Museum of Style Icons (MOSI) in Kildare, Ireland from October 29 to November 6 before making its way back to the Julien’s Auctions Gallery in Los Angeles.

    THE LARGEST SEAL EVER USED BY QIANLONG AS EMPEROR SUPREME AT SOTHEBY’S

    THE largest seal ever used by Qianlong as Emperor Supreme will lead Sotheby’s Hong Kong Chinese Works of Art Autumn Sales 2016 in Hong Kong on October 5.  The Imperial Khotan-green Jade ‘Taishang Huangdi zhi Bao’ Seal is estimated at US10-15 million. On February 9, 1796 the Qianlong Emperor abdicated after 60 years on the throne and thus became Emperor Supreme. This massive jade seal celebrates his long and outstanding reign.  Other highlights include a unique Imperial Inscribed Documentary Cinnabar Laquered Wutong Qin not seen on the open market for over half a century, and an extremely rare pair of Pink-Ground Famille-Rose ‘Trompe L’oeil’ Jars and Covers. The series of six sales will offer close to 300 lots with a total estimate of approximately US$80 million.

    Nicolas Chow, Deputy Chairman, Sotheby’s Asia, International Head and Chairman, Chinese Works of Art, said: “This October we are proud to present a stunning array of material spanning from the dawn of Buddhist art in China in the 4th century to the culmination of material refinement at the Qing dynasty court in the 18th century. The selection includes private collections such as that of the celebrated Japanese connoisseur Sakamoto Gor? and Roger Keverne, one of the doyens of London’s art scene. Two extraordinary historical objects from the Qianlong period anchor the sale, one a superb zither made to his order in 1746, and the other a massive jade seal carved fifty years later marking his rise to the status of Emperor Supreme.”

    ART FROM MCCLELLAND COLLECTION AT WHYTE’S SEPTEMBER SALE

    An array of art from the estate of George and Maura McClelland will feature at Whyte’s autumn auction of Irish & International Art at the RDS in Dublin on September 26.    Lots 1-78 in the sale are from the collection, which included some of the finest examples from the oeuvres of Gerard Dillon, Tony O’Malley, Louis le Brocquy, F.E. McWilliam, Colin Middleton, William Conor, Frank McKelvey, William Leech and many others.  The balance of the sale [a further 102 lots] includes several other major works by Ireland’s best-known artists including Jack B Yeats, Paul Henry, Walter Osborne, Dan O’Neill and Harry Kernoff.

    A total of 170 works donated from the McClelland’s now forms part of IMMA’s permanent collection.

    JAMES ENSOR PRINTS AT SOTHEBY’S

    ensorA private collection of 78 prints by Belgian artist James Ensor, one of the most comprehensive of its kind ever at auction, will come up at Sotheby’s in London on September 27. The sale precedes Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans, an upcoming exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts from October 29 to January 29. This will present the first major showing of Ensor’s work to be held in the UK in 20 years. Ensor’s reputation as a painter of carnivals and crowds – “the painter of masks” – has perhaps overshadowed his extraordinary achievements in printmaking. The broad range of subject matter encompasses delicate landscapes, townscapes and seascapes, celebrated self-portraits and sardonic portraits of politicians, religious and fantastical scenes. It is estimated to make a combined total in excess of £300,000 in Sotheby’s sale of Prints and Multiples.
