    TAUBMAN MASTERWORKS BRING IN $377 MILLION AT SOTHEBY’S

    Masterworks from the Taubman collection brought in $377 million at Sotheby’s in New York last night. In its first appearance at auction Modigliani’s portrait of Paulette Jourdain made $42.8 million after five bidders from around the globe competed. It went to an Asian buyer. A total of twelve works achieved more than $10 million and Frank Stella’s Delaware Crossing more than doubled the previous auction record for the artist when it made $13.7 million.

    Willem de Koonings Untitled XXI sold for $24.9 million. A private European collector paid $20.4 million for Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Lavender and Green) and Femme assize sur une chaise by Pablo Picasso (a portrait of Dora Maar) made $20 million.  A selection of six works on paper by Egon Schiele sold for $13.5 million and all 14 sculptures were sold, with a combined total of $37.9 million.

    More than 400 works from the collection of the late A Alfred Taubman are to be sold across various auctions at Sotheby’s throughout 2016. (All images courtesy Sotheby’s).

    TWO WORKS BY SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL AT SOTHEBY’S

    The art of Sir Winston Churchill is hot.  His Goldfish Pool at Chartwell sold for £1.7 million last year.  Sotheby’s will offer two works by the wartime leader at the Modern British and Post War art sale in London on November 17.  One of is Venice, the other the South of France.  His  Scuola di San Marco in Venice dates from 1951 when he was 77 and is estimated at £250,000-350,000.  An earlier work, St Jean de Vie between Cannes and Grasse is from the 1930’s and is estimated at  £120,000-180,000.

    Lynn Chadwick’s Stabile with Mobile Element comes to the market for the first time. Off the radar for over 60 years and previously only known through the artist’s original sketch it is being sold by the family of its one and only owner, who acquired it in 1954, just two years after it was made.  It is estimated at £400,000-600,000.

    THE BERNHEIMER COLLECTION AT SOTHEBY’S

    A two day sale of The Bernheimer Collection will be held at Sotheby’s in London on November 24 and 25. The 539 lots to be offered comprise both treasures from the Bernheimer personal collection and stock from the family business, including objects from Bernheimer Palais, a six-storey high palace on Munich’s Lenbachplatz built by the family’s patriarch Lehmann Bernheimer in 1889. Spanning various collecting categories, including furniture, painting, sculpture, porcelain, and wine, these artworks have been housed mainly in Burg Marquartstein, an 11th-century castle in Bavaria that Konrad Bernheimer especially bought in 1987. As he is about to hand over to the next generation, the celebrated Old Master dealer Konrad Berheimer has decided to sell Burg Marquartstein and part with the collection.

    In a separate development Bernheimer, who is chairman of the 255 year old Colnaghi firm in London, has just announced a merger with London and Madrid based fine art dealers Coll & Cortés.  Colnaghi will offer European Old Master paintings, sculptures and drawings, as well as art from the Spanish-speaking world. A century after the firm moved from Pall Mall to Mayfair, Colnaghi will return to St. James’s in 2016, moving from Old Bond Street to a larger, custom-built gallery where they will present international Old Master paintings, sculptures and drawings in a fresh context suited to the 21st century.

    The Bernheimer business started with a tiny market stall in Munich in the mid-19th century and swiftly grew into the most illustrious antique and interior decoration emporium in the world. Following their deportation to Dachau and the expropriation of the business by the Nazis, part of the family emigrated to Venezuela. They returned after the war to reinvent the business which soon became famous as the “Bloomingdales for Antiques”. The family tradition continues today.

    THE COLLECTION OF STING AND TRUDIE STYLER

    Works from the Art Collection of Sting & Trudie Styler will be offered at auction at Christie’s in London next February 24. Formed over the past 20 years and housed in their former family home at Queen Anne’s Gate, London the collection captures the couple’s passion for art and design. Over 200 lots – from bold abstracts by Ben Nicholson and Alan Reynolds and striking Mapplethorpe photographs and sophisticated 20th century furniture and lighting – will come under the hammer.  Estimates range from £1,000 to £500,000.

    Andy Waters, Senior Director, Head of Private Collection Sales, Christie’s London said: “Their home at Queen Anne’s Gate effortlessly combined luxury, rarity and colour – a skilful balance that created the ultimate London home. Each work of art was carefully chosen and the resulting collection is a testament to Sting and Trudie Styler’s informed eye for Art and Design.     NEW RECORD FOR SCULPTOR ROWAN GILLESPIE

    There was a new world record for sculptor Rowan Gillespie at Sotheby’s Irish art sale in London today.  When Hope and History Rhyme, a 2015 bronze, sold for £161,000 over a top estimate of £30,000. The eleven foot tall sculpture is a tribute to Seamus Heaney.  It was bought by a private collector.

    The top lot was Japanese Switzerland by Sir John Lavery which made £509,000, just over the top estimate of £500,000.  It too went to a private collector. The Talkers by Yeats made a within estimate £209,000 and The Trotter by the same artist made £100,000.  Both prices were comfortably within estimate.  In the West of Ireland by Paul Henry made £63,750 and Hastings Railway Station by Walter Osborne sold for £62,500.

    The sale realized over £1.8 million, but 26 of the 71 lots on offer failed to sell, including Orpen’s Nude Girl Reading.

    Grant Ford, Head of Irish Art, Sotheby’s, said: “We had a fantastic response to our exhibitions in Dublin and London, and today we saw strong results, for both established and emerging names. The top lot, Lavery’s beautiful Japanese Switzerland, made over £500,000, an extraordinary price, more than three times what it made in 1996. The Rowan Gillespie sculpture sparked a bidding war, reaching £161,000, a record for the artist at auction. There was great interest in the contemporary artworks, particularly Elizabeth Magill’s Heartland, which doubled pre-sale expectations to achieve an auction record. The appeal of these artists is truly global and we saw bidders not only from the UK and Ireland, but also the US and further afield, with several works purchased by buyers new to Sotheby’s. Today’s results are very encouraging for the Irish Art market and we are now looking forward to our next major Irish sale in 2016.”  The Magill sold for £40,000.

    A BLOCKBUSTER ART LINE UP AT CHRISTIE’S, NEW YORK

    A blockbuster line-up of Impressionist and Modern art highlights will come up at Christie’s in New York in November.  They will be sold in a  combined cross-category week of major fine art sales from November 9-13.  Over 500 works of Impressionist and Modern Art by the most celebrated artists of the era will be offered beginning with The Artist’s Muse: A Curated Evening Sale on November 9, 

    The sale week will be led by Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu couché from 1917-1918, a masterpiece of the Modern era. Poised to set a new auction record for the artist, it is among the star lots of a special cross-category sale of 20th century art curated along the theme of the artist’s muse.     DIVERSE RANGE AT MEALY’S AUTUMN SALES IN CASTLECOMER

    At Mealy’s autumn auction in Castlecomer, Co.
