    HISTORIC STAINED GLASS PANELS AT FONSIE MEALY

    Historic stained glass from the Convent of Mercy in Castletownbere,  Ernest Bewley’s desk and a white marble crouching Venus once at Powerscourt House are among the lots to tempt collectors at Fonsie Mealy’s two day sale in Castlecomer on July 25 and 26.
    The prime piece from among eight stained glass panels is entitled St. Patrick Our National Apostle.  Estimated at 4,000-6,000 it depicts King Loegaire, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, King of Pagans and Barbarians, being baptised and received into the catholic church. It was made  by Earley and Company (1861-1975), one of the largest ecclesiastical  decorators in Ireland and the UK.  The rest of the eight  panels depict various saints, Our Lady and the Sacred Heart with estimates from 700 to 6,000.
    Lot 550 is a late 19th century Chinese export wooden desk owned and used by Ernest Bewley, founder of the eponymous oriental cafes. It is estimated at 2,000-3,000.  The catalogue cover lot is an Italian crouching Venus which was in the Great Salon at Powerscourt in the 1800’s.  Powerscourt and most of its contents were destroyed by fire in 1974. It is estimated at 7,000-9,000.

    The auction will feature a collection of more than 70 lots of militaria built up over the past 40 years. Among these is a pair of Irish flintlock duelling pistols by McDermot (Dublin) estimated at 5,000-7,000.  There is a selection of Georgian and Victorian furniture form Kevin Castle in Co. Cavan. Lot 183, Lord Nelson’s shoe buckle was formerly in the Bridgeport collection and the vendor believes it to have been originally held by Nelson’s brother William.  Art includes a group of five original watercolours relating to the 1798 rebellion by  Arthur David McCormick for a London book marking the centenary of the rebellion in 1898.  This is estimated at 4,500-5,500. A depiction of The Fish Market at Roundstone by Kenneth Webb is estimated at 10,000-15,000. The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

    A WORK BY ENGLAND’S MICHELANGELO MAKES £320,750 AT SOTHEBY’S

    George Frederic Watts(1817-1904) – Orpheus and Eurydice

    One of the greatest compositions by George Frederic Watts, ‘England’s Michelangelo’ sold for £320,750 at Sotheby’s sale of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite and British Impressionist art in London.  Orpheus and Eurydice remained in Watts’ possession until his death in 1904 when it was inherited by his adopted daughter Lilian. The romantic subject matter may have been inspired by the emotions Watts was experiencing following the breakdown of his first marriage to the young actress Ellen Terry, resulting in their separation after only eleven months.  

    Simon Toll, Sotheby’s Victorian Art Specialist, said: “Orpheus and Eurydice encapsulates everything that made Watts’ art so visionary and revolutionary in the 1860s – powerful drama, a sensual and expressive use of paint and rich colour and reverence for the work of the Italian Old Masters. This hauntingly beautiful vision of lost love is among a handful of his best-known pictures and the most important example of his art to be seen at auction in the last decade and a half. It is fitting that a picture of two lovers emerging from the shadows should itself re-emerge into public view in the year that marks the two-hundred year anniversary of the artist’s birth.”

    A RECORD FOR SAMUEL HENRY BROCAS AT CHRISTIE’S

    There was a new auction record for Irish artist Samuel Frederick Brocas at Christie’s classic week sales. A pen and ink and watercolour of the GPO and Nelson’s Pillar, Sackville Street, with the Dublin Lying-in hospital beyond sold for £20,000.

    The General Post Office on Sackville Street, modern day O’Connell Street, is perhaps the most iconic of Dublin’s buildings, serving as the headquarters of the Irish Republicans during the Easter Rising of 1916. The adjacent Nelson’s Pillar survived the Rising but was destroyed by Republicans in 1966. The rotunda of the Dublin Lying-in Hospital, today the Rotunda Gate Theatre, is visible, as is the spire of the St George’s church.

    WILLIAM CROZIER RETROSPECTIVE AT UILINN

    A William Crozier retrospective has just opened at Uilinn in Skibbereen.  The show presents the west Cork landscapes he made close to his home from the mid 1980’s against a backdrop of his early work inspired by the Existentialist movement and the anxieties of the post war period.

    The exhibition will be shown across two venues with his later works at Uilinn until August 31 and his earlier works at the Irish Museum of Modern Art from October 12 until April 2018.  Both shows are curated by Sean Kissane, exhibitions curator at IMMA.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. REMBRANDT AND THANK YOU

    The Rijksmuseum is celebrating Rembrandt’s anniversary today with the online publication Drawings by Rembrandt.  Born on July 15, 1606 he is regarded as one of the greatest artists in the history of art. The Rijksmuseum has the most important collection paintings, drawings and prints by Rembrandt in the world.

    All drawings by Rembrandt from the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam will now be available to everyone in high resolution.  This is accompanied with the most up to date knowledge by Rembrandt specialist Peter Schatborn and Head of the Rijksmuseum Printroom Jane Turner. From now on, researchers, students and Rembrandt-lovers will gain new insights, knowledge and inspiration by the 64 landscapes, biblical scenes, portraits and everyday scenes of Rembrandt.

    AN EXHIBITION ABOUT SHELTER AND REFUGE

    Eilis O’Connell – Capsule for Destinies Unknown

    Capsule for Destinies Unknown, a 14 metre long sculpture by Eilis O’Connell, features at ARK at Chester Cathedral until October 15. ARK is a group exhibition  based on the idea of shelter and refuge.  More than 90 works by  renowned artists like Lynn Chadwick, Elisabeth Frink, Antony Gormley, Barbara Hepworth, Damien Hirst, David Mach and Sarah Lucas are in the show curated by Gallery Pangolin.

    O’Connell says she is haunted by stories of the desperate situation refugees find themselves in and a feeling of being unable to help.  “Often I make inviting hollowed out spaces as part of a sculpture, but this one is very different, it’s not that inviting being made of corrugated galvanised steel and polycarbonate sheeting.  These are humble, everyday materials, often used to make temporary living spaces”.  The exhibition at Chester runs until October 15.

    ONLINE ART AND DESIGN AT DE VERES

    An online art and design auction will be held by Dublin based de Veres on July 18.  Emphasis is very much affordable.  It will include residual pictures from the collection of Michael Carroll, much of whose collection was sold in April.  All were acquired from Dublin galleries the The Dawson, Taylor and Oliver Dowling during the 1970’s and ’80’s.     AN ONLINE ART SALE AT WHYTE’S

    There will be an online sale of art by Irish and international artists at Whyte’s on July 17 at 6 p.m.  The emphasis is on the affordable and estimates for most lots are in the range of 100 to 1000.  The sale is on view this week at Whyte’s on Molesworth St. in Dublin and the venue for the auction is Buswell’s Hotel.     GUINNESS GUARDI MAKES £26.2 MILLION

    A painting by Francesco Guardi handed down through generations of the Guinness family made £26.2 million at Christie’s Classic Week Old Masters evening sale in London last night. The Rialto Bridge with the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi achieved the highest price paid for an Old Master this year. It  is one of the celebrated pair of views of the Grand Canal at the Rialto, which are widely regarded as the most accomplished works of Guardi’s early maturity. Ambitious in scale and startlingly innovative both in design and pictorial mood, this work stands among the masterpieces of eighteenth-century European art. The picture is prominently signed and exceptionally well preserved, having been offered for sale only once in its history.

    The sale totalled £43,848,250.  The evening sale achieved 75% by lot and 78% by value and saw registered bidders from 23 countries, across 4 continents.

    Henry Pettifer, Head of Christie’s Old Master Paintings EMERI said: “’The Rialto Bridge with the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi’ by Francesco Guardi is the most expensive Old Master painting since the sale of Rubens’s ‘Lot and his Daughters’ this time last year. It continues the momentum in the Old Masters field at Christie’s and proves once again the global appetite for the very best works of art.”

    TURNER’S EHRENBREITSTEIN SELLS FOR £18.5 MILLION

    J.M.W Turner’s – Ehrenbreitstein made £18,533,750 at Sotheby’s sale of Old Master Paintings in London last night.  This is the highest price paid for an Old Master at Sotheby’s London since the sale of the artist’s Rome, From Mount Aventine for a record £30,322,500 in 2014.   Last night’s evening sale  realised a total of £52,514,750, a substantial increase on both London sales last year (July 2016: £16.5 million / December 2016: £14.8 million).

    One of the largest sales of its kind, comprising nearly 70 lots, the auction was 85.3% sold by lot, the highest-ever sell-through-rate for any Old Masters sale held at Sotheby’s in London, and the second consecutive sale of its kind  to achieve a sell-through rate of over 80%. Ten works on paper by the artist (among them an early watercolour of Ehrenbreitstein) were sold for a combined £1.3m, which together with Ehrenbreitstein brings the total for works by Turner sold  to £19.8 million.
