    MONET, PICASSO, MODIGLIANI, KAHLO AT CHRISTIE’S IN MAY

    An exceptional selection of 52 works will feature at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art evening sale in New York on May 12. Led by outstanding paintings by Monet, Picasso, and Modigliani, many of which have not been on the market for decades, the sale will feature several estates and private collections including The H.O. Havemeyer Collection, The Collection of Kenneth and Susan Kaiserman, The Ducommun Family Collection, and A Distinguished American Collection offering Frida Kahlo’s dream like love scene of Dos Desnudos en el bosque.

    Brooke Lampley, Christie’s Head of Impressionist and Modern Art, New York,  remarked: “This season we tailored our sale to meet current collector demand for iconic examples from the most celebrated artists of the period. The two Monets, Modigliani portrait, Picasso mousquetaire and Braque still life are all of unmatched quality and come with distinguished provenance.”

    PICASSO CERAMICS AT SOTHEBY’S IN LONDON

    An auction of important ceramics by Pablo Picasso takes place at Sotheby’s in London on April 5. There are over 200 ceramics, with estimates ranging from £1,000 – 1,500 to £80,000 – 120,000.  The focus of the sale is Picasso’s editioned ceramics and the Nina Miller Collection is highlighted by two unique ceramics Caractère

    (£20,000 – 30,000) and Deux Poissons (£25,000 – 35,000).  Beginning with his first trip to Vallauris in the summer of 1946, Picasso remained enchanted by the freedom and expressive nature of the ceramic medium through the last 25 years of his life.  Taken by the idea that anyone could buy, use and decorate their homes with them he was persuaded to make numbered editions of some. There are 633 multiples, usually in editions of from 25 to 500.

    ENDURING COLLECTORS IN RESILIENT GLOBAL MARKET

    Collectors were out in force as Sotheby’s recorded sales of £126.8 million in London this week.  The enduring appetite of collectors in a resilient global market was noted by Helena Newman, Global Co-Head of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Department.

    She said: “The outstanding result of today’s ‘Picasso in Private’ auction drew the week of sales to a close on a high note, with prices soaring above high estimate. Looking at the results across our first sale series of 2016, we have seen solid demand and activity at each level of the market across as broad an international spectrum of participants as ever. We saw 5 works selling for over £7 million / $10 million through to 19 works that sold over £1 million / 26 over $1million, and extraordinary strength in sculpture and Surrealist art this week. With a remarkable 543 lots offered over the course of the week at a sell-through rate of 78%, the sale results reflect the enduring appetite of collectors in a resilient global market.”

    SOTHEBY’S IMPRESSIONIST, MODERN AND SURREAL SALES ACHIEVE £93.7 MILLION SO FAR

    Impressionist, Modern and Surreal art brought in a total of £93.7 million at Sotheby’s in London last night.  The top lot was Pablo Picasso’s Tete de Femme which sold for£18.9 million.  It was a portrait of his muse Marie Therese Walter painted in 1935. A lifetime cast of Auguste Rodin’s Iris – once in the collection of Sylvester Stallone – sold for £11.6 million.  The Surrealist section was led by Le Miroir by Paul Delvaux which sold for £7.3 million, a new auction record for the artist.  Henri Matisse’s La Lecon de Piano sold for £10.8 million and  Claude Monet’s Le Palais Ducal vu de Saint Georges Majeur  sold for £11.6 million.

    There were participants from 35 countries, which was on a par with last year.  Helena Newman, Global Co-Head of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Department, said: “Tonight we saw continued market activity across all price levels, with depth of bidding from a broad international spectrum. Five lots selling for more than £7/$10 million and there was particular strength for sculpture and Surrealism – with record prices achieved for both Rodin and Delvaux.”

    Sales of Impressionist and Modern Art continue today.

    MONET, PICASSO, MATISSE, WARHOL, FREUD AND RICHTER

    sothebys artArt by Monet, Picasso, Matisse, Warhol, Freud and Richter have been unveiled together for the first time by Sotheby’s ahead of London’s upcoming auctions of  Impressionist, Modern, Surreal and Contemporary art.  Highlights include Picasso’s ‘golden muse’, Marie Thérèse Walter (£16-20m): Lucian Freud’s deeply intimate portrait of 17-year-old lover while pregnant with daughter Bella (£7-10m); a monumental abstract canvas by the world’s most valuable living painter, Gerhard Richter (£14-20m); Matisse’s exceptional La Leçon de piano, emerging after 89 years in a private British collection  (£12-18m); Andy Warhol’s iconic Large Campbell’s Soup Can (£4.5-6.5m) and Monet’s spectacular view of the Palazzo Ducale on the Grand Canal, Venice (£12-18m).

    WORKS BY PICASSO THAT STAYED IN HIS STUDIO

    An exciting opportunity to acquire works on paper, ceramics and terracotta sculpture by Pablo Picasso that remained in the artist’s studio throughout his lifetime arises at Sotheby’s in London on February 5.  They are from the collection of his granddaughter Marina Picasso.  A masterful overview of Picasso’s career in its entirety, spanning every decade of his oeuvre and encompassing each of the artist’s genres – including many that mark the genesis of his greatest ideas – the collection of 187 works includes 70 ceramics and terracotta sculptures and 106 works on paper. Estimates range from £4,000 to £180,000 and the sale is expected to make a combined total of £6.9–9.8 million. It will be held the morning of February 5following Sotheby’s Impressionist, Modern & Surrealist Art evening and day sales on February 3 and 4.

    SELF-PORTRAIT BY EGON SCHIELE AT CHRISTIE’S

    A self-portrait by Egon Schiele painted when the artist reached creative maturity in 1909 leads Christie’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in London on February 2.  It is estimated at £6-8 million.  The auction includes 50 lots which trace the rich variety and breadth of revolutionary movements from the late 19th and early 20th century from Impressionism, to early Modernism, Cubism, Colourist works and Expressionism.

    Among the museum quality works on offer are Les mariés de la Tour Eiffel, one of Marc Chagall’s most romantic paintings of the 1920’s (£4.8-6.8 million); the largest of a series of four works Paul Cézanne created at the home of legendary Impressionist collector Victor Chocquet (£4.5-6.5 million); Fernand Léger’s Le moteur, 1918, (£4-6 million); a still life by Pablo Picasso from 1937, painted on the eve of Guernica (£4-6 million);  Chrysanthemum by Piet Mondrian (£1.6-2.4 million) and Bahnhof Königstein, by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1916. The evening sales of Impressionist, Modern and Surrealist Art on February 2 have a total pre-sale estimate of £87.3 million to £129.1 million.

    The auction will open a week of five Impressionist, Modern and Surreal art sales at Christie’s King Street and South Kensington with estimates from £300 to £10 million.

    TAUBMAN MASTERWORKS BRING IN $377 MILLION AT SOTHEBY’S

    Masterworks from the Taubman collection brought in $377 million at Sotheby’s in New York last night. In its first appearance at auction Modigliani’s portrait of Paulette Jourdain made $42.8 million after five bidders from around the globe competed. It went to an Asian buyer. A total of twelve works achieved more than $10 million and Frank Stella’s Delaware Crossing more than doubled the previous auction record for the artist when it made $13.7 million.

    Willem de Koonings Untitled XXI sold for $24.9 million. A private European collector paid $20.4 million for Mark Rothko’s Untitled (Lavender and Green) and Femme assize sur une chaise by Pablo Picasso (a portrait of Dora Maar) made $20 million.  A selection of six works on paper by Egon Schiele sold for $13.5 million and all 14 sculptures were sold, with a combined total of $37.9 million.

    More than 400 works from the collection of the late A Alfred Taubman are to be sold across various auctions at Sotheby’s throughout 2016. (All images courtesy Sotheby’s).

    THE COLLECTION OF STING AND TRUDIE STYLER

    Works from the Art Collection of Sting & Trudie Styler will be offered at auction at Christie’s in London next February 24. Formed over the past 20 years and housed in their former family home at Queen Anne’s Gate, London the collection captures the couple’s passion for art and design. Over 200 lots – from bold abstracts by Ben Nicholson and Alan Reynolds and striking Mapplethorpe photographs and sophisticated 20th century furniture and lighting – will come under the hammer.  Estimates range from £1,000 to £500,000.

    BLUE PERIOD PICASSO AND MONET’S LILIES AT SOTHEBY’S

    The finest Blue Period work by Pablo Picasso to come to auction in a generation and a seminal Waterlilies by Claude Monet come up at Sotheby’s evening sale of Impressionist and Modern  art in New York on November 5.   Picacco’s La Gommeuse of 1901 and Monets Nympheas (1908) are from the collection of American entrepreneur and America’s Cup winner William I. Koch.

    Simon Shaw, Co-Head of Sotheby’s Worldwide Impressionist & Modern Art Department, said: “Above all others, Picasso’s Blue Period is prized as his breakthrough – this is the moment Picasso becomes Picasso. With her dreamy gaze and frank sensuality, the cabaret dancer in La Gommeuse ushers in a new visual idiom for the 20th century. Exploring themes which would underpin Picasso’s work for the next seven decades, the painting stands squarely between the bohemian nightlife of Toulouse-Lautrec and the raw expressionism of Munch and Schiele. La Gommeuse and Nymphéas hung together in the salon of Bill Koch’s beautiful home. These are two icons of art history from one of the greatest American collections ever assembled – a testament to Mr. Koch’s unique connoisseurship, which we are honored to celebrate this fall at Sotheby’s.”

    Picasso’s Blue Period works are exceptionally rare, with most residing in prestigious institutional collections including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Musée Picasso, Paris; and the Art Institute of Chicago.

    The paintings will be on view at Sotheby’s in London during Frieze week from October 10-15.
