    DIVERSE SELECTION AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL’S RHA AUCTION

    Art by Paul Henry, Basil Blackshaw, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Banksy are among a diverse selection at the Irish and International art auction by Morgan O’Driscoll at the RHA Gallery in Dublin on December 5 at 6 p.m.  The international selection includes Lichtenstein’s Red Lamps (1990) numbered 23/60 from his Interior Series (35,000-45,000), Festival (2006) by Banksy with a Pest Control Certificate of Authenticity (15,000-20,000) and Martha Graham: Lamentation (1986) by Andy Warhol (6,000-9,000).  There is a selection of Irish work from artists as diverse as Donald Teskey, Letitia Marion Hamilton, Charles Tyrrell, Nano Reid, Robert Ballagh, Markey Robinson, Hughie O’Donoghue, John Behan and John Noel Smith.  The catalogue, with 161 lots, is online.     HENRY’S WEST OF IRELAND LANDSCAPE THE TOP LOT AT WHYTE’S

    Paul Henry’s West of Ireland Landscape was the top lot at Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin this evening. Measuring 15″ by just over 18″ it sold for a hammer price of 87,000 against an estimate of 90,000-120,000.  Resting by Dan O’Neill made a hammer of 23,000, The Tram, Dublin Nocturne 1926 by Harry Kernoff made 16,000 at hammer, Pierrot by Gerard Dillon made 12,500, Evening Andalucian Town by George Campbell made 11,000, Two Trees by Basil Blackshaw made 20,000 and Still Life with Flowers by the same artist sold for 18,000, Morning Flight, Paradise Island, Bahamas 1980 by Tony O’Malley made 14,000, Garden at Night by William Crozier made 19,000, a Portrait of Sir Edward Wortley Montague by Charles Jervas made 10,500, Three Men in a Boat by Liam O’Neill made 10,000 and a c1965 wood sculpture by Hilary Heron – A level headed man – sold for 8,000.

    The sale grossed 830,000 and 78% of lots on offer found buyers.

    BRITISH AND IRISH ART MARKET ON THE UP AT BONHAMS

    Paul Henry (1876-1958) – The Cottage by the Lake (£30,000-50,000) sold for £79,300

    A mid year British and Irish art market report by Bonhams shows an increase of 22% in the year so far. They say that bullish conditions were evident at the June auction which totalled £8.3 million and was the company’s most successful to date. The sale was 86% sold by lot and 46% of lots sold above their high estimates.

    Irish art was 100% sold with strong prices for stalwarts like Sir John Lavery and Jack B. Yeats. The welcome surprise of the day, according to Bonhams, was the £79,300 paid for an 8″ x 10″ painting by Paul Henry. Bonhams say that work from the 1930’s and 40’s  experienced a particular surge and that right now there  is an overall hunger for quality.  The next major sale of British and Irish art is on November 23 and the closing date for entries is October 7.

    RECOVERED IRISH PAINTINGS COME TO SALE AT SOTHEBY’S

    irish sothPaintings by Yeats, Lavery and Henry are to be offered at Sotheby’s Irish art sale in London on September 13.  The three works were stolen from a house in Co. Wicklow in 2015 and are now being offered for sale by insurance company Chubb.  The combined estimate for the works is £47,000-70,000.

    The painting are Jack Butler Yeats’ The Fern in the Area, Paul Henry’s Landscape with Cottage, and Sir John Lavery’s Portrait de femme au chapeau.

    Charlie Minter, Sotheby’s Irish Art Specialist, said: “The remarkable recovery of these paintings has ensured that their fate looks immeasurably brighter and we look forward to finding new homes for them. The Lavery and Henry passed through our doors fifteen years ago and we’re thrilled to be able to offer them at auction again.”

    Single File by Jack B. Yeats is one of a number of works by Irish artists at Bonhams in London on June 15.  The sale of Modern British and Irish Art includes work by Yeats, Paul Henry, Dan O’Neill, William Scott and sculptor F.E. MacWilliam. The Yeats and two Henry’s are all estimated at £30,000-50,000, the O’Neill at £5,000-8,000 and the Scott’s at sums from £12,000 to £30,000.

    Irish works at Bonhams sale of Modern British and Irish art in London on June 15 will include two landscapes by Paul Henry and a late work by Jack B.     PAUL HENRY’S CONNEMARA LANDSCAPE TOPS WHYTE’S AUCTION

    Paul Henry, Connemara Landscape sold for 100,000 at hammer.

    Paul Henry’s Connemara Landscape was the top lot at Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin last night. It sold for 100,000 at hammer. A second Henry, West of Ireland Road through the Bog, made 82,000.  Both works were sold to a collector in Co. Clare.

    Sean Keating’s 1924 work Salud made 52,ooo.  Gerard Dillon’s  West of Ireland Couple and Horses sold for 36,000 and another Dillon, The Fish Eaters made 24,000, Miscellaneous Objects by Harry Kernoff sold for 28,000, Pond Reverie by Tony O’Malley made 22,000, a triptych by Barrie Cooke made 18,000 and Trapeze I by John Shinnors sold for 16,000 at hammer.

    The top Yeat’s in in the auction, A Professional Man from 1905, failed to find a buyer and a Basil Blackshaw with an estimate of 10,000-15,000 was also passed.  The sale total was 850,000,  80% of lots found buyers and a good number of sold works soared above the high estimate.  Whyte’s next sale is on July 25.

    A KERRY LAKE BY PAUL HENRY SELLS FOR A HAMMER PRICE OF 74,000

    A Kerry Lake by Paul Henry was the top lot at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction in Dublin. It made a hammer price of 74,000 against an estimate of 60,000-80,000. A charcoal on paper by the same artist, Man Crossing a Bog, made 16,000 in a successful auction where most lots found buyers.  A watercolour by Sean Scully entitled 3.17.02 sold for 29,000 and Colorado Springs by Lord of the Dance turned visual artist Michael Flatley sold for 42,000. Markey Robinson’s Going to Mass sold for 11,000 and Bunbeg, Co. Donegal by Letitia Marion Hamilton sold for a hammer price of 15,000.
