ART BY PAUL HENRY AND JACK B. YEATS AT BONHAMS

Irish works at Bonhams sale of Modern British and Irish art in London on June 15 will include two landscapes by Paul Henry and a late work by Jack B. Yeats entitled Single File. All three works are estimated at £30,000-50,000. Other Irish artists featured include William Scott, Dan O’Neill and F.E. MacWilliam. The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:

PAUL HENRY’S CONNEMARA LANDSCAPE TOPS WHYTE’S AUCTION

Paul Henry, Connemara Landscape (80,000-120,000)

Paul Henry, Connemara Landscape sold for 100,000 at hammer.

Paul Henry’s Connemara Landscape was the top lot at Whyte’s sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin last night. It sold for 100,000 at hammer. A second Henry, West of Ireland Road through the Bog, made 82,000. Both works were sold to a collector in Co. Clare.

Sean Keating’s 1924 work Salud made 52,ooo. Gerard Dillon’s West of Ireland Couple and Horses sold for 36,000 and another Dillon, The Fish Eaters made 24,000, Miscellaneous Objects by Harry Kernoff sold for 28,000, Pond Reverie by Tony O’Malley made 22,000, a triptych by Barrie Cooke made 18,000 and Trapeze I by John Shinnors sold for 16,000 at hammer.

The top Yeat’s in in the auction, A Professional Man from 1905, failed to find a buyer and a Basil Blackshaw with an estimate of 10,000-15,000 was also passed. The sale total was 850,000, 80% of lots found buyers and a good number of sold works soared above the high estimate. Whyte’s next sale is on July 25.

A KERRY LAKE BY PAUL HENRY SELLS FOR A HAMMER PRICE OF 74,000

A Kerry Lake by Paul Henry was the top lot at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction in Dublin. It made a hammer price of 74,000 against an estimate of 60,000-80,000. A charcoal on paper by the same artist, Man Crossing a Bog, made 16,000 in a successful auction where most lots found buyers. A watercolour by Sean Scully entitled 3.17.02 sold for 29,000 and Colorado Springs by Lord of the Dance turned visual artist Michael Flatley sold for 42,000. Markey Robinson’s Going to Mass sold for 11,000 and Bunbeg, Co. Donegal by Letitia Marion Hamilton sold for a hammer price of 15,000.

A CONNEMARA VILLAGE BY PAUL HENRY SELLS FOR 119,000 AT HAMMER

A Connemara Village by Paul Henry

A Connemara Village by Paul Henry was the top lot at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin last night. It sold for a hammer price of 119,000 over a top estimate of 100,000. Four telephone bidders hotly pursued the work, which measures just 14 x 15 ¾”. A smaller work by Paul Henry (five by six and a quarter inches) Cumulus Clouds, Dugort with a top estimate of 10,000 sold for 15,000 on the hammer with no less than eight bidders in pursuit, including one in Abu Dhabi.

In fact very few lots at this auction had only one bidder, which is indicative of a continuing pick up in the Irish art market. The sale realised 855,000 with premium with a sell through rate of 81%.

PAUL HENRY TOPS THE POLL AT SUCCESSFUL WHYTE’S SALE

Building Tops by Christy Brown sold for 1,600

Paul Henry topped the poll at Whyte’s sale of Irish and international art. His Kerry Bog sold for a hammer price of 66,000 in a sale that grossed 580,000 with 79% of 209 lots sold. Whyte’s worries that the political instability in Ireland due to the inconclusive general election results might affect the market proved to be unfounded. The second highest lot was another Henry, Cabins by a Lough which made 54,000. An untitled Miro from 1973 made 20,000 at hammer, Cecil Maguire’s Early Light, Lough Inagh made a strong 9,000, as did Summer Yachting by James Humbert Craig. Harry Kernoff’s Western Colleen made 8,800 and Wild Ponies, Connemara by Patrick Hennessy sold for 7,500. Other artists in demand included Camille Souter, Patrick Scott, George Campbell, John Skelton, Markey Robinson and Christy Brown.

HENRY, YEATS HIGHLIGHT WHYTE’S UPCOMING ART AUCTION

Art by Paul Henry and Jack Butler Yeats will highlight Whyte’s sale at the RDS in Dublin on February 29. Whyte’s is approaching this sale with a sense of marked optimism fuelled by what they describe as enormously encouraging results for sales of Irish art in 2015. The inaugural 2016 sale at Whyte’s will include Irish art stalwarts and international offerings with work by Joan Miro, Tracey Emin, David Hockney and Damien Hirst included.

Paul Henry was enchanted with Kerry, telling a friend in New York of its loveliness and saying that he felt that if he spent a lifetime there he would never exhaust all the possible subjects. A Kerry Bog in this sale dates to 1934-35 and is estimated at 60,000-80,000. There is a similar estimate on The Quay Worker’s Home by Jack B. Yeats, a rare depiction of urban life in 1920’s Ireland.

A Study of Dustman Reilly for The Key Men c1958-60 by Sean Keating features a well known Dublin character and bin man who was chairman of the George Bernard Shaw branch of the Irish Labour Party in Dublin. It is estimated at 20,000-30,000.

An untitled work by Joan Miro is estimated at 18,000-20,000 and there are examples of work by Dame Elisabeth Frink and other British artists. Henry St. Dublin during the 1916 Rising by Flemish artist Edmond Delrenne has an estimate of 8,000-10,000. There is work by Patrick Hennessy, Basil Blackshaw, Percy French, Nathanial Hone, Harry Kernoff, Frank McKelvey, George Campbell, Markey Robinson, Tony O’Malley and Patrick Scott.

A PREVIOUSLY UNSEEN PAUL HENRY AT ADAMS

Paul Henry (1877-1958) – Connemara Village (70,000-100,000).

A previously unseen painting of a Connemara village by Paul Henry will be among the highlights at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin in March.

In fact this classical Henry work, never before seen in public and from the collection of late mid 20th century Fine Gael Taoiseach John A Costello, has never before been on the open market.

Adams is estimating the work, which measures 12″ x 15 ¾”, at 70,000-100,000. They promise that the auction on March 23 will be full of interest.

ANOTHER GREAT NIGHT OF IRISH ART SALES

Convad by Dan O’Neill sold for 15,000 at hammer.

A Yeats at 210,000 and a Henry at 97,000 helped to make for another great night for Irish art sales in Dublin this evening. These prices at Morgan O’Driscoll’s Irish and International art auction are hammer, to which fees and commissions amounting to just under 25% will be added. They continue the trend established at last weeks Irish art sales in Dublin, which were notable for competitive bidding and a number of above estimate prices. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in latter years and shows that the recovery in prices in the market for Irish art is now well and truly established. One work by Michael Flatley sold for 34,000, the second was passed. Each one had been estimated at 30,000-50,000. Dan O’Neill’s Convad made 15,000 at hammer. Other prices included St. George’s Market, Belfast by Markey Robinson (14,000), Glacier III by Barrie Cooke (7,600), White Scarecrow and Clown by John Shinnors (11,000), Grid by John Kingerlee (6,000), Second Version of Painting 1946 (1971), a lithograph by Francis Bacon (7,500), Whispering leaves and wandering sheep by Joseph Malachy Kavanagh (8,500), Tarring the Shed by Nano Reid (11,500), Being 1997 by Louis le Brocquy (13,000) and Barn, West of Ireland by Donald Teskey (9,000).

YEATS AND HENRY AT MORGAN O’DRISCOLL’S DUBLIN AUCTION

Fine works by Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry are included in Morgan O’Driscoll‘s sale Irish and International art auction at the RDS on December 7. In the wake of successful sales of Irish art in Dublin already this week there is anticipation around this sale which is headed by a 1949 Jack B. Yeats entitled Business. Estimated at 200,000-300,000 this work was once in the Jefferson Smurfit collection. Morgan O’Driscoll has just completed a viewing for this sale in London. The catalogue is online.
