    REMINDERS OF A FORGOTTEN IRISH VC AT O’DONOVAN SALE

    A World War I British Army recruitment poster featuring Inchigeelagh born Victoria Cross recipient Michael O’Leary comes up as lot 18 at O’Donovan’s online auction in Newcastlewest on April 3.  He was awarded Britain’s most prestigious award for gallantry for single handedly charging and destroying two German barricades defended by machine gun positions at  Cuinchy in France in 1915.

    Subsequently feted in London and Macroom he was jeered by Ulster Volunteers during a recruitment drive in Ballaghaderreen in the autumn of 1915. This caused such a scandal that it was raised in the Houses of Parliament. O’Leary, who died in London in 1961, served in France in the same regiment as British actor Stanley Holloway and the two, both born in 1890, remained lifelong friends. Holloway often stayed at The May Fair Hotel where O’Leary was concierge.  The recruitment poster is estimated at €150-€250. The contents of two pubs in Cork and Limerick will be offered by O’Donovan’s. The auction offers collectibles and many items of interest including a Michael Collins portrait poster, a Dan Breen wanted poster, an Allman’s Irish Whisky mirror, advertising signs and road signs of various sorts.

    MURDERED PRIESTS PAINTING AT O’DONOVAN’S SALE

    THIS painting of three catholic priests murdered by British Crown Forces a century ago comes up at O’Donovan’s sale in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick onJune 11.  It emerged from the attic of an estate in Limerick along with ten editions of the South Western Command War News (August-October 1922) and four editions of the Limerick War News (July and August 2022).  Enniskeane native Fr. James O’Callaghan, cc Clogheen, Cork was shot dead in May 1921 aged 36;  Canon Thomas Magner (73), the parish priest in Dunmanway,  was murdered in December 1920.  Local man Tadgh Crowley was murdered on the same day. Fr. Michael Griffin (29) of Gurteen, Co. Galway was abducted from his house at Rahoon, Galway in November 1920.  His body was.  discovered six days later.

    A LIMERICK SILVER SPOON AT O’DONOVAN’S AUCTION

    Irish Provincial silver is prized by collectors and Limerick silver is rare. So there will be interest in a c1820 serving or basting spoon by the Limerick maker Robert O’Shaughnessy which comes up at O’Donovan’s sale in Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick on July 20. It comes from the clearance of a residence in Adare and is estimated at 1,200-1,600.

    OLD IRISH RUGBY PROGRAMMES AT LIMERICK AUCTION

    Antique furniture and collectibles including Ireland rugby programmes will come under  the hammer at O’Donovan’s, Newcastlewest on August 26.  The sale includes contents from two houses in Limerick.   A large collection of Irish rugby match programmes from the 1950’s and ’60’s, many signed by team members, was found in one of these houses.  The catalogue is online.
