The subject of Etude de Femme by Roderic O’Conor at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on October 1 is believed to be Renee Honta initially his model and mistress, then his constant companion and, in 1933, his wife.  O’Conor included the work in a group of nine paintings he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in 1919.  Adams have estimated it at 60,000-80,000.  It is one of 216 works on the catalogue, which is online. AN important collection of Czech Modernism from the Roy and Mary Cullen Collection in Houston comes up at Sotheby’s in London on November 12.  Adrian Biddell, Senior Director, Sotheby’s 19^th Century European Paintings Department, describes the Roy & Mary Cullen Collection, as “an extraordinary collecting achievement. Formed with a combination of passion and patience, it focuses on the rich and compelling story of Czech Avant-Garde art between the First and Second World Wars as told by the artists, illustrators, photographers and writers of the time. The paintings, works on paper, prints and books capture the visual, literary and intellectual ideas that flourished in Prague and Paris during this period. Sotheby’s sale of the Hascoe Collection of Czech Modern Art in London in June 2011 revealed enormous interest in the market for Czech art and realised more than double the pre-sale estimate. The Roy & Mary Cullen Collection presents the next chapter in Czech art, specifically Czech Surrealism between the wars.” Comprising approximately 120 lots, the Roy & Mary Cullen Collection is expected to bring in the region of £1.7 million.

The second annual sale of Asobi: Ingenious Creativity – Japanese Works of Art from Antiquity to Contemporary takes place at Christie’s,  South Kensington on October 15 during Frieze week. From its inception to the present day, there is a joie de vivre that runs through Japanese culture and is apparent throughout the visual arts. Asobi gokoro, or ‘the playful heart’ manifests itself in an endless play with form, from wilful distortion to tongue-in-cheek humour; light-hearted treatment of serious themes to the juxtaposition of unexpected elements. The leitmotif of the sale, Asobi connects prehistoric ceramics, 16^th/17^th century screens and 20^th century avant-garde painting and photographs. Comprising over 170 lots the sale is led by a magnificent panel by Shibata Zeshin (1807 – 1891) the only exhibition panel of this scale to come to auction (£600,000-800,000).

A diverse selection of Irish and international art will come up at Whyte’s auction at the RDS in Dublin on September 29.  Irish art on offer includes a classic Connemara landscape by Paul Henry, In the West of Ireland (45,000-55,000) and a previously unrecorded portrait by Sir John Lavery, Lady in Green (20,000-30,000).  Pulling for Shore by William Conor has an estimate of  18,000-22,000, Dan O’Neill’s Studio Interior is estimated at 30,000-40,000 and Louis le Brocquy’s Head (With Spectacles) 1971 is estimated at 25,000-35,000.  There will be Irish and international interest in a set of ten limited edition screenprints and lithographs from Sir Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series.   These are estimated at 10,000-12,000.  There will be over 20 lots from the Taylor Collection.  The Taylor Gallery, Belfast (in administration) was a leading Northern Ireland gallery with a reputation for Irish and international artists including Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, Joan Miro and Banksy.  All have works in the auction.  The catalogue is online.  Here is a selection:

Art by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol is included among eleven works from the Cy Twombly Foundation to be sold at Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art sales in New York on November 12-13. Acquired by Twombly in the 1960s the works are all by artists represented by the legendary Leo Castelli Gallery.  The sale represents two generations of artists who became established in the 1960’s.  Highlighting the group are three drawings by Roy Lichtenstein – all quintessentially Pop – using imagery of everyday objects and advertising from the 1960s. They are Hot Dog, 1964, the bold 10?, 1961 – 1962, and Like New, 1962. Also included is Andy Warhol’s Little Electric Chair, 1964, a painting that Twombly traded directly with the artist. There are two early works by Bruce Nauman, including one of only three Light Trap photographs, William T. Wiley or Ray Johnson Trap, 1967 and the sly and conceptual resin sculpture, Device to Hold a Box at a Slight Angle, 1966. Both were included in artist’s first debut solo exhibition in New York at Leo Castelli Gallery, curated by David Whitney.

Laura Paulson, Chairman and International Director for Post-War and Contemporary Art, declared: “This extraordinary group of works by Lichtenstein, Nauman, Warhol and Oldenburg represents one of the most creative and rich periods in Post-War American art which emerged in the 1960’s.”
