    • A GREAT HOUSE RE-AWAKENED IN DORSET

    The re-awakening of one of Britain’s great houses, St Giles House in Dorset ancestral seat of the Earls of Shaftesbury, has emerged as the winner of the 2015 Historic Houses Association (HHA) & Sotheby’s Restoration Award. St. Giles, which has remained in the family since the 14th-century, had been abandoned and derelict for over 50 years. It was transformed over the past four and a half years through a restoration project undertaken by the 12th Earl and Countess of Shaftsbury. Lord Shaftesbury inherited the house and 5,000 acre estate in 2005, aged only 25, following the tragic death of his father and, only a few months later, of his elder brother.  With the help of grants from Natural England and the Country House Foundation, the grounds and grand interiors of St Giles House have now been returned to their former glory.

    Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftsbury (1621-1683), a founder of the Whig party, built the nucleus of the house. The estate continued to be developed over successive generations.  It was uninhabited for the latter part of the 20th century.  Only a few years ago snow was blowing into the library and sections of the house were at risk of collapse.

    Lord Shaftesbury said: “It is a huge honour to receive this award after four and a half years of hard work. It’s amazing now to look back at the project and think where we’ve come – it’s safe to say we’ve achieved far more than any of us imagined possible. Hopefully it will inspire others to do the same.”

    ECHOES OF ADARE MANOR AUCTION AT HEGARTY’S IN BANDON

    An Irish George III stool with cabriole legs and a George II circular wine table with birdcage movement originally purchased at the Adare Manor auction in June 1982 will come up at Hegarty’s auction in Bandon on August 11.  Hegarty’s have not put an estimate on lots 329 and 330 on their online catalogue.  The sale features a coin, jewellery and silver collection.  The highlight here is a proof 22 carat gold medal commemorating the 900th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings by Spink and Sons, London, 1966.  The medal weighs six ounces and is estimated at 5,000-7,000.

    PAVILION OF ART AND DESIGN IN LONDON

    A collection of small-scale European sculptures from antiquity to the modern period will be shown by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art at the Pavilion of Art & Design in Berkeley Square, London, from October 14-18 October.  Carefully chosen to appeal to the collectors and enthusiasts of 20th century design and arts that PAD attracts, the works in bronze, marble, wood and a variety of media will be exhibited as a contemporary collector’s cabinet in a modernist-style room setting.

    Highlights include a fine pair of 18th century ivory statuettes of Flemish Baroque painters Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641), by James Francis Verskovis (d.1768); an exquisite pair of bronze figures of Mars and Venus by the French sculptor Sebastien Slodtz (1655-1726) and a striking modern work of a female figure by Peter King (1928-1957), a prolific artist, peer of Caro and Frink, exceptional sculptor and assistant to Henry Moore.

    “We are excited to be exhibiting at PAD London for the first time. We believe it is important to reach out to new collectors by presenting Master sculpture in an environment with which they are more familiar,”said Dino Tomasso, gallery Director. “We’ve designed a modernist-style collector’s cabinet, very different to our classically-inspired stands at fairs such as TEFAF and Masterpiece.”

    YEATS’S HOBBY HORSES SOAR ABOVE ESTIMATE AT DOLAN’S

    Hobby Horses by Jack B Yeats sold for an above estimate 121,000 at hammer to become the top lot at Dolan’s two day sale in Clifden in Connemara. The howling gales that blew around the marquee for this high season summer auction failed to deter buyers.  The Yeats, with a top estimate of 85,000, was one of a number of lots which exceeded to high estimate. Among them was Sean Keating’s Na fir an Oilean which sold for 10,500 (7,000-8,000); Kenneth Webb’s Moonlight, Galway which made 9,500 (4,000-6,000), Tony O’Malley’s Sea Studio which made 9,000 (6,000-8,000), Gerard Dillon’s Blue Jug and Easel which made 11,000 over an estimate of 5,000-10,000 and Donald Hamilton Fraser’s Orange and Blue Headland which made 9,900 over an estimate of 3,000-5,000).

    A limited edition copy of Anna Livia Plurabelle signed by James Joyce and published in New York in 1928 sold for 2,000.

    MADERSON LEADS AT IRISH ART ONLINE AUCTION

    Arthur Maderson’s Le Marche de Nuit (The Night Market) was the top lot at Morgan O’Driscoll’s online auction of Irish art this week. It made 4,200 in an auction that was 90% sold.  John Behan’s Summer Birds, a unique bronze sculpture, sold for 3,000 and Coral Strand, Connemara by Kenneth Webb made 2,800.

    THE WALLACE COLLECTION AND THE BATTLE OF AGINCOURT

    THE 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt will be marked at the Wallace Collection in London this autumn with a display of  weapons and armour from the early 15th century.   The exhibition – The Sinews of War – goes on display from September 1 and will include rare books from the archive of the collection, which  encompasses old master oil paintings from the 14th to the late 19th century including works by Titian, Velazquez, Rubens and Van Dyck, princely arms and armour, and one of the finest collections of French 18th century art.

    Agincourt has been celebrated as a great victory for the common man over haughty aristocrats, for the heroic King Henry V, and as and the culmination of Shakespeare’s famous play Henry V. All of the most popular interpretations of this event resonate with the image of the plucky and vastly outnumbered English defeating their apparently insurmountable French enemies. Sources in this exhibition show that Henry’s campaign and subsequent battle was more complicated than the myth. Here are some of the objects to be displayed.

    EL LISSITZKY AT IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

    El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State brings to Ireland for the first time an extraordinary body of works by the Russian avant garde artist. They have been lent to Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) by the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. These are shown alongside archival material related to Alice Milligan and Maud Gonne’s theatrical tableaux, and newly commissioned and recent works by Rossella Biscotti (Italy 1978), Núria Güell (Spain 1981), Sarah Pierce (USA 1968) and Hito Steyerl (Germany 1966). El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941) was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The exhibition is at IMMA until October 18.

    WORKS FROM YOSHIHARA JIRO COLLECTION AT SOTHEBY’S

    The first dedicated sale of works from the Yoshihara Jiro collection ever to appear on the market will come up at Sotheby’s Contemporary Asian Art sale in Hong Kong on October 5. It will feature works both created and coveted by Yoshihara, the celebrated founder of Japan’s 20th-century avant-garde Gutai movement.  There are more than 20 original Yoshihara canvas, paper and ceramic works, many from his iconic Circle series.

    Evelyn Lin, Head of Contemporary Asian Art, Sotheby’s, said: “Dating from the mid-1930s to the early-1970s, Full Circle encompasses a comprehensive array of works rarely seen on the market, showcasing Yoshihara’s immaculate art, vision and taste, as well as his exploration on the circle motif in the later stage of his artistic career.  At a time when Gutai has received much international acclaim on its art-historical contributions, we look forward to presenting the collection this autumn, as a much deserved tribute to the contemporary master.”

    A FRENCH ROYAL FAMILY SALE AT SOTHEBY’S PARIS

    Paintings, drawings, furniture and historical memorabilia from the French royal family will come up at Sotheby’s in Paris on September 29.  The sale  from the collections of the late Comte de Paris (1909-1999) and Comtesse de Paris (1911-2003)  is from the dynasty that reigned over France for nearly a thousand years.  There are 200 lots from various residences of the Orléans family, the cadet branch, which later became the eldest branch of the Royal House of France.  In 1848, during the July Revolution which ended the reign of Louis-Philippe, they went with the royal family into exile, firstly to Claremont House in England, then to the Manoir d’Anjou in Belgium, and then to Portugal.  They returned to France in the 1950s when the exile act barring pretenders to the French throne from French territory was repealed.  They have always remained the private property of the descendants of King Louis-Philippe.  The works have been housed since 1974 by the Fondation Saint-Louis and were restored to the heirs of the Comte and Comtesse de Paris by a district court ruling in 2013.

    YEATS HORSES IN WEST OF IRELAND AUCTION AT CLIFDEN

    Hobby Horses, a 1927 oil by Jack B. Yeats, will be one of a number of highlights at the August Bank Holiday summer art and collectibles auction by Dolans in Clifden on August 3 and 4.  It is estimated at 78,000-85,000. The 540 lot auction includes a limited edition copy of Anna Livia Plurabelle signed by James Joyce and published in New York in 1928 estimated at 1,800-2,200.

    Photographs from the Lawrence Collection make up the opening lots on Monday, August 3.  The three 19th century albums focus on Counties Kildare, Donegal and Kilkenny. Each one is estimated at 350-450. There is art by Harry Kernoff, Norah McGuinness, Kenneth Webb, Sean Keating and a wide selection of artists like Frank Egginton whose work is closely associated with the west of Ireland.  European painting is represented by Lazlo Neogrady’s Winter Sunlight, a snow scene of quality estimated at 6,000-8,000.  Collectibles include an exceptionally large copper preserving pan and a miniature chest of drawers.  The second day of the sale kicks off with some advertising metal posters, signs and lithographs by Shell and Guinness. The auction features paintings, silver, books, furniture, antiques, collectibles and rugs.  The catalogue is online. Here is a small selection:
