Antique furniture and collectibles including Ireland rugby programmes will come under the hammer at O’Donovan’s, Newcastlewest on August 26. The sale includes contents from two houses in Limerick. A large collection of Irish rugby match programmes from the 1950’s and ’60’s, many signed by team members, was found in one of these houses. The catalogue is online. Here is a sample:

Tribal Art London runs from September 6-9 with 23 exhibitors, the biggest in its ten year history. There will be a diverse range of works with prices from the low hundreds to over £20,000. Taking place a week prior to Parcours des Mondes Paris, the biggest tribal art event in the world which runs this year from September 12-17 the event attracts many international specialist dealers and museum curators.
Well-known tribal art collectors who attend the fair include Mark Blackburn (based in Hawaii, focusing on Oceanic art), collectors of Aboriginal and Oceanic art Sam and Sharon Singer (U.S.A.), Antonio Lunari (Italy), and African art collector Jonathan Lowen (UK). Institutions are always in attendance, such as Quai Branly, the British Museum and the Royal Academy. Here is a small selection:

In 2003 Vincent O’Brien was voted the greatest trainer in horse racing history in a worldwide poll hosted by The Racing Post. His six Derby winners included Nijinsky and Sir Ivor and he trained three Grand National winners in succession. “The Premier Quality” sidelock ejector guns by E.J. Churchill were built in 1928. They were subsequently owned by Vincent O’Brien and the case bears his initials. They are estimated at £8,000-12,000.

More than 400 photographs from the Museum of Modern Art in New York are to be sold at Christie’s to benefit the acquisitions fund for the Department of Photography.Works offered include iconic photographs by many of the most well-known names from the early 20th century to the post-war period, including Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Man Ray, Edward Weston, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Walker Evans. The selection is led by two unique Rayograph works by Man Ray from 1923 and 1928 which are to be offered on October 10.
The sale will start with four highlights on October 10. A subsequent series of online auctions will be held in October, December and in January and April 2018. The online sales are curated to encompass important themes including Pictorialism into Modernism, Women in Photography and several sales on individual photographers. Highlights will be previewed during exhibitions in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York starting in September 2017. Cataloguing and complete details of the sales will be available on Christies.com in September.

A three day antiques, fine art and jewellery fair to coincide with the Dublin Horse Show opens on August 9 at the Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge. Organisers Vintage Ireland say that despite being a new venture it is something of a return to the traditional fairs of many years ago. This is a smaller, intimate fair with hand-picked participants, focusing on showcasing high-quality items from well-established traders.
The fair is a collaborative effort between long-established event organisers Vintage Ireland and a number of antiques, art and jewellery traders who previously exhibited at the RDS during the Dublin Horse Show. It has been organised in response to the introduction of new terms and conditions entailing an upper limit of 100 euro on the value of individual items of jewellery sold at the horse show. Among those who will participate are Dorothy Kenny of Nessador Antiques, Marie Curran, Moycullen Antiques, Gerd and Helmut Peters, and Treasures Irish Art.
Morgan O’Driscoll’s sale, on view in Skibbereen throughout this Bank Holiday weekend, features work by Basil Blackshaw, George Campbell, Gladys McCabe, Mark O’Neill, Brian Maguire,Kenneth Webb, Charles Tyrrell, Peter Curling, John Kingerlee, Peter Blake and photographer John Minihan among 189 lots. A long case clock with brass dial and a French tortoiseshell and pewter mantle clock will be included as well as some 19th century Irish silver. Outdoor pieces include a pair of garden lions, a griffin, a pair of ornamental cannon and a ships anchor. An Aran jumper from the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, at Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo, is to feature in a new exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The history and impact of the Aran jumper will be explored in Items: Is Fashion Modern?, alongside a host of well-known fashion designs such an example of the biker jacket from the 1950s; a Wonderbra; a Birkin bag; a 1960s Breton shirt; a pair of Levi’s 501 jeans from the 1940s; and a collection of Little Black Dresses. The exhibition is due to open in the autumn.
The jumper is a cream, knitted piece from 1940 made from a heavy, scoured wool. The patterns are different front and back. The centre panel on one side has a diamond stitch and the centre of the other side consists of a trellis openwork pattern with bobbles. It is currently being prepared by the conservation team at the National Museum of Ireland to be transported to MoMA ahead of the exhibition opening on October 1. According to MoMA, each of the 111 items explored in the exhibition were selected because they have had a “profound impact on the world over the last century”.
With work by Basil Blackshaw, George Campbell, Peter Blake and Mark O’Neill the current sale of Irish art online at Morgan O’Driscoll runs until Tuesday, August 8. There are 189 lots on offer, including 15 pieces of sculpture. The sale is on view throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend at Morgan O’Driscoll’s headquarters in Skibbereen in scenic west Cork.
