    • APTER-FREDERICKS TO MOVE TO AN ONLINE MODEL

    The venerable London antique firm Apter-Fredericks is closing three floors of showrooms and moving to an online business model. In mid September they will vacate the Fulham Road premises, their location for the past 73 years. A company statement said: “Despite this change, Apter-Fredericks is still committed to dealing in the finest eighteenth century English furniture.  We are keen to embrace the future and operate in the new norm.  Our business will continue to offer fine and important pieces of English furniture to private clients, interior designers and institutions. We shall be available to assist in sourcing, selling and restoration.”

    The firm will continue to present our stock by website and will be available to view by appointment and at art fairs – specifically Masterpiece London and the Winter Show New York.

    “In giving up the shop with our three floors of showrooms, we find our storerooms rather over-stretched.  We would encourage you to contact us should you require any furniture or should you have been considering a particular piece of stock in the past, all of which will be sold at the most agreeable prices.”

    MILES DAVIS DESIGNED TRUMPET AT EXCEPTIONAL SALE

    A trumpet designed and played by Miles Davis, one of the most significant jazz musicians of all time, comes up at the Exceptional Sale at Christie’s in New York on October 29. The ‘Martin Committee’ Trumpet in B Flat, model T3460, by the Martin Co., was commissioned circa 1980 and features a deep blue lacquer and gilt crescent moon and stars, designed according to Davis’s specifications. The ‘Moon and Stars’ trumpet is estimated at $70,000-100,000.

    In a performing and recording career of almost fifty years Miles Davis produced many critically acclaimed albums and Kind of Blue, recorded in just two sessions in 1959, remains the best-selling jazz album of all time.

    A SUNDAY INTERIORS SALE AT JAMES ADAM

    THE first Sunday interior sale of the new season at Dublin auctioneers James Adam takes place on September 8. It will feature antique furniture and collectibles in porcelain, silver, glass and art. The most expensively estimated lot is a Dutch landscape by Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom (1805-1880) (2,500-3,500). These Sunday sales offer something for both new and established collectors. The catalogue, which is online, shows 454 lots.

    WIDE SELECTION ON OFFER AT WOODWARDS

    The sale of 350 lots at Woodwards in Cork on September 7 offers a wide selection with everything from a Cork longcase clock and a set of 11-bar dining chairs to an old Irish cut glass ewer and some Irish silver. The furniture selection features a Georgian walnut chest on stand (1,200-2,000), a Sheraton inlaid sofa table (1,500-2,000), a Sheraton display cabinet (1,000-1,500), a set of Cork 11-bar chairs (2,000-3,000), a Sheraton style credenza (1,000-1,500), a Georgian cellarette (600-1,000),  a Cork longcase clock by Sam’l Hayles (1,000-2,000) and a pair of demi-lune side tables (600-1,000). A pair of cast iron vases on stands is estimated at 800-1,500 and a cast iron five piece patio set has an estimate of 1,200-2,000.The selection of porcelain has global reach and includes a pair of Imari vases (600-800), a large Cantonese bowl (300-500), a pair of Meissen bottle vases (400-800), a Dresden vase (300-500) and a 76 piece Royal Crown Derby dinner service (600-800).

    KERRY WATERCOLOUR BY WILLIAM TILLYER

    One of William Tillyer’s Kerry watercolours comes up at Sotheby’s Made in Britain sale in London on September 10   The eminent English artist, now 81 and noted for the diversity of his output, worked at the Cill Rialaig Project in 2001 and produced “The Age of Anxiety Watercolours”.  This one shows Kerry, but not as we would recognise it and is estimated at £2,500-3,500.  The sale will feature a selection of art by the Irish artist William Scott.

    COLLECTION WITH A ROYAL TWIST AT CHRISTIE’S

    Visions of Collecting: Royal and Aristocratic, An Important Private Collection at Christie’s in London on September 19 will feature 350 lots and reflects a fascination with Royal provenance. It features furniture, paintings, ceramics, sculpture, tapestries, silver, objects and works of art, lighting and soft furnishings from British and other European Royal families and Britain’s great country houses. Leading the sale is Corso auf dem Monte Pincio, 1911 by Max Liebermann, which was owned by Paul Cassirer, the influential modern art dealer and publisher (£200,000-300,000). The collection is expected to realise in excess of £2 million.

    HEARTSHIP TO HONOUR MIGRANT PEOPLES IN CORK

    The relic of a human heart is to be part of a floating art installation honouring migrant peoples in Cork. Heartship – a new project by artist Dorothy Cross featuring singer Lisa Hannigan – will celebrate the contribution of the Irish Naval services to the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean.  On Saturday September 14 the LE James Joyce will sail up the River Lee to Cork from Haulbowline.  The lone occupant visible on deck will be Lisa Hannigan and the recorded sound of her ethereal voice will emanate from the vessel. Discovered encased in lead in a  crypt in Cork in 1863 the heart belonged to a person unknown. It was acquired by General Pitt Rivers, then stationed in Cork, and became part of the extraordinary collection of artefacts housed in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. “Heartship has been haunting me for the past three years” Dorothy Cross said “wishing to honour the many hearts of migrant people who disappear below the ocean surface and lie unnamed on the sea bed”.  Renowned film maker Alan Gilsenan will work with Cross to create a film to embody Heartship. This will be screened at The Crawford Gallery. Previous projects by Dorothy Cross include Ghostship, a lightship painted with phospherous paint moored for three weeks in Dublin Bay in 1999 where it glowed in the dark each night.

    PATRICK MURPHY COLLECTION AT SOTHEBY’S

    Modern and Contemporary British and Irish from the collection of Patrick and Antoinette Murphy will come under the hammer across a number of sales at Sotheby’s in Paris and London. He has served as chairman for the Arts Council in Ireland and Antoinette set up the Peppercannister Gallery in Dublin. More than 30 works from their extensive collection include art by Henry Moore, William Scott, Gillian Ayres, John Bellany, Alan Davie and Sir Matthew Smith.

    As a brewer for Guinness, Patrick travelled all over the world – from London and Paris, Tokyo and New York to Kuala Lumpur and Kumasi – acquiring artworks wherever possible. He was chair on the ROSC exhibitions which introduced artists like Picasso, Lichtenstein and Rothko to Irish audiences.

    THE COLLECTION OF EILEEN AND I.M. PEI AT CHRISTIE’S

    Seminal works by Barnett Newman, Jean Dubuffet, and Zao Wou-Ki are included in the Collection of Eileen and I.M. Pei which will come up at Christie’s this autumn. All were friends of the celebrated international architect and his wife. Their collection, acumulated over the course of their 72 year marriage, features an exceptional selecton of paintings, drawings, works on paper and sculpture. Additional works by Franz Kline,Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi, Willem de Kooning, Henry Moore, Jacques Lipchitz, Xu Shiqi and Isamu Noguchi highlight the diversity of the couple’s aesthetic interests and influences. The full collection of 59 works is expected to exceed $25 million. It will be offered through sales at Christie’s in New York, Hong Kong and Paris.
