A 14 foot long Victorian d-end dining table and two sets of Cork 11-bar chairs come up at Woodwards online sale in Cork on September 5. The dining table is estimated at €1,000-€2,000, the chairs at €2,000-€3,000. Among the other lots are an Edwardian display cabinet (€500-€800), a Victorian walnut centre table (€700-1,000), an Edwardian serving table (€500-€800) and inlaid card table (€500-€800) and a tallboy chest (€400-€600). A fine Isfahan rug is estimated at €3,000-4,000, there is a selection of Cork silver by Egans.

More than 30 donated artworks are under the hammer at an online charity auction at Christie’s until September 16. The Marie Curie great summer art auction – in aid of the UK charity which offers care and support to the terminally ill – was originally to have been held at the Royal Academy. A two part landmark online auction of the collection of media magnate Jerry Perenchio opens at Christie’s today and continues until September 16/17. European furniture and ceramics, prints, old master drawings, sculpture, Chinese ceramics and works of art, silver, carpets, and memorabilia are curated across two themed online auctions. More than 400 lots with estimates from $500-$100,000 are on offer. The chairman and ceo of Univision assembled one of the most pre-eminent collections of Impressionist Art in the US. He bequeathed most of his collection to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The Sick Bed by Jack B. Yeats at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on September 2 is as topical in the pandemic as it was months ago in March when this auction was originally scheduled to take place. This 1950 painting, with an estimate of €250,000-€350,000, highlights an auction that includes new to market works by leading Irish artists and 16 paintings by Terence P.Flanagan from the estate of his widow Sheelagh. The Sick Bed is a late Yeats work which depicts the psychological and emotional interaction between a man in a dark blue suit sitting at the bedside of a woman whose head reclines on the pillow.Hay Stooks with Cottages by Paul Henry, from a private Cork collection, is estimated at €50,000-€70,000 as is Bound for the Islands by Yeats. Bogland Kerry by Paul Henry has an estimate of €40,000-€60,000. In his catalogue introduction the art historian Dickon Hall chronicles the position of Terence and Sheelagh Flanagan in the cultural life of Northern Ireland at a time of intense political upheaval. He places this art in the context of work by William Scott and F E McWilliam, as well as that of Seamus Heaney, all of whom were friends of the Flanagans. The paintings on offer range from early works from the 1960’s to 2005 with estimates from €1,500-€10,000.Dan O’Neill’s Four Provinces of Ireland is a set of four oil paintings featuring Mount Errigal, Carrantuohill, Glendalough and The Twelve Bens. These small works are estimated at €20,000-€30,000. An Aubusson tapestry by Louis le Brocquy of oranges in a cloud of greenery against a deep blue sky is estimated at €30,000-€50,000. A watercolour image of Samuel Beckett by le Brocquy is estimated at €15,000-€20,000.Colin Middleton’s Birth of David dates to 1944 and comes with surreal references to the life of King David and perhaps the Star of David at a time of persecution of jews in Europe (€20,000-€30,000).There is contemporary art by Patrick Collins, Donald Teskey, Nano Reid, Sean McSweeney, Tony O’Malley, Norah McGuinness and David Crone and sculpture by Jacob Epstein, John Behan and Sandra Bell.

A portrait by Sir Gerard Festus Kelly of Man Than E made 36,00 and Ucello, an Aubusson tapestry by Louis le Brocquy made 65,000 at hammer, Bogland Kerry by Paul Henry sold for 36,000 and The Four Provinces of Ireland by Dan O’Neill made 20,000.

A blue and white jug with an image of Bearforest House in Mallow is among the lots at Aidan Foley’s online only sale in Doneraile, Co. Cork on September 5. Bearforest was designed by Sir Richard Morrison, the architect of many notable country houses in Ireland including Fota in Cork, Kilruddery near Bray and Ballyfin in Co. Laois. There is Cork and Irish silver, antique furniture including a French 19th century walnut display cabinet, a Victorian breakfast table and games tables and a wide variety of collectibles. Art includes work by Arthur Maderson and Marie Carroll and a selection. of hunting prints.
This painting of a Kerry Fisherman by Jack B. Yeats has been in a private family collection in Canada for over fifty years. It comes up at Sotheby’s annual Irish Art sale in London on September 9 with an estimate of £70,000-£100,000. Dating to the late 1920’s Sotheby’s say it has not been at auction before. The strong features and confident stance offer a heroic figure, Yeats’s wonder and admiration for such figures was instilled in him during a childhood near the quays of Sligo. The work anticipates the looser brushwork and dissolving forms of his later work. The sale, which includes 18 works from the collection of Sir Michael Smurfit, is on view by appointment only at the RHA in Dublin from 10 am to 5 pm today and from 10 am to 3 pm tomorrow. In the Woods at Marley by Evie Hone is Lot 19 at the James Adam sale of Important Irish Art in Dublin on September 2. The watercolour is estimated at 2,500-3,500. This is the re-scheduled 2020 Spring Sale which was to have taken place on March 25. There are paintings and sculpture from a variety of Irish collections and the catalogue is online.

A new global auction calendar has been added to the traditional Fall auction series by Christie’s. This follows the success of ONE, the $420 million live streamed global relay auction in July. The new calendar features a mid autumn marquee week of evening and day sales in New York ahead of the traditional November auctions and a synchronised series of sales in London and Paris devoted to the best of 20th and 21st century art. These will be conducted live and live streamed from the Rockefeller galleries on October 6 and 7. London and Paris auctions will be live streamed on October 22 and 23.
The October New York sales will offer extraordinary examples of Impressionist, Modern, Post-War and Contemporary art, led by Paul Cézanne’s Nature morte avec pot au lait, melon et sucrier, a watercolor still life from the collection of the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. The still life, which dates to 1900-1906, was acquired by Edsel Ford in 1933. In the region of $25 million, Nature morte avec pot au lait, melon et sucrier is the finest watercolor by the artist to come to auction in over thirty years.

A curated ensemble of artworks and furniture with prestigious provenance comes up at Christie’s Collections sale in Paris on September 22. It will feature collections from King Leopold II’s villa at Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, HRH Princess Murat’s former private collection from rue de Monceau, Mr. Henri Klinger’s collection and drawing, paintings, furniture and art from the estate of Mrs. Francose Heftler. Collections is a new concept for Christie’s in Paris and it follows successful iterations in New York and London.
