    • LEINSTER HOUSE CABINETS SELL FOR £106,250

    The Leinster House cabinets sold for £106,250 at Christie’s in London today. By Thomas Chippendale junior they were part of a remarkable furniture sale entitled Apter-Fredericks: 75 Years of Important English Furniture. Originally at Leinster House, then at Carton, they remained in the possession of the FitzGerald family over the centuries. The hammer price was £85,000 and the top estimate was £60,000.

    A Regency Imperial extending dining table by Gillows of Lancaster commissioned for Westport House sold for £87,500. The sale of 140 lots brought in £3,408,750.

    THE DESIGN OF THE YEAR 2020

    The Design Museum in London has named the Teeter-Totter Wall, an interactive installation that allowed children based in both the USA and Mexico to play together across the border wall, as the Beazley Design of the Year 2020. The project designed by architects Ronald Rael and Virginia San Fratello with Colectivo Chopeke, created a place where children from both countries could connect playfully through three bright pink see-saws.

    The three bright pink ‘teeter-totters’ (seesaws) were slotted into gaps in the steel boundary wall by designers from both sides of the border and installed for just under twenty minutes on July 28, 2019. Although a temporary installation, the event lived on through footage shared virally on social media.

    HUGE INTEREST IN APTER-FREDERICKS SALE AT CHRISTIE’S

    The Apter-Fredericks auction online at Christie’s on January 19 has garnered enormous interest.  There are a number of fine Irish pieces on sale. Shown here is a c1750 Irish George II bottle carrier.  Used in the dining room it was on casters to allow drinks to be circulated among the guests. Apter-Fredericks have closed their London shop after 75 years and moved to an online model. This sale offers some truly exceptional pieces of fine antique furniture.

    RARE IRISH PROOF COIN AT DIX NOONAN WEBB

    An extremely rare Irish Proof or Pattern Halfpenny  is one of a number of valuable Irish coins coming up at Dix Noonan Webb in London.  Bought for the equivalent of $2 many years ago it will be offered at a live/online auction of Coins and Historical Medals on on February 2.   It is from the collection of the late Eric Newman,  an important numismatist from the US. The George III halfpenny dates to 1774.  Complete with a portrait of the long haired king and with a harp on the reverse it is estimated at £2,400-3,000. An Irish George III pattern mule penny from 1813, one of only three specimens known, is estimated at £6,000-8,000.

    The virtual antique fair by Hibernian Antique Fairs today and tomorrow by Hibernian Antique Fairs can be accessed using this link .http://hibernianantiques.ie/fairs/5  In this online event the dealers who traditionally display their wares at fairs up and down the country put photographs, prices, contact and delivery details online. This is the fifth virtual fair organised by Hibernian Antique Fairs. The last on the ground event they organised took place on February 29/March 1 at Kilronan Castle in Co. Roscommon.

    MITCHELSTOWN CONNECTION AT CHRISTIE’S NEW YORK ONLINE SALE

    UPDATE: THIS SOLD FOR $30,000

    This portrait by Hugh Douglas Hamilton (1739-1808) of Robert King, 2nd Earl of Kingston and Caroline, nee Fitzgerald, Countess of Kingston is at Christie’s online right now. It is lot 81 of an online auction of Old Master and British Drawings including property from the Cornelia Bessie Estate at Christie’s, New York until January 28.

    The Earl of Kingston is a title in the Peerage of Ireland. Robert, 2nd Earl of Kingston (1753-1799), was the M.P. for County Cork. He and his wife Caroline (1754-1823) hired the author and educational philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) as governess to their daughters at Mitchelstown Castle – she had a particular influence on Margaret, their eldest daughter, who became a well-known writer and political activist. Wollstonecraft, now regarded as a founding feminist philosopher, died 11 days after giving birth to her second daughter, the writer Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. The painting is estimated at $12,000-18,000.

    BRIAN MAGUIRE SOLO SHOW IN CHICAGO

    A solo exhibition by renowned Irish artist Brian Maguire opens today at the Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago. War Changes its Address and Other Border Stories runs until February 13. Since the 1970’s Brian Maguire has approached painting as an act of solidarity. He operates a truly engaged practice, compelled by the raw realities of humanity’s violence against itself, and the potential for justice. Significant bodies of work over the last four decades includes the Irish Prison Paintings (1988-90), Favela Vila Prudente and Casa da Cultura for the São Paulo Biennial (1998), Femicide/Juarez (2009-12), and more recently the Aleppo Paintings (2017).

    Over the past 40 years Rhona Hoffman Gallery has built an outstanding reputation with a diverse programme which champions socio-politically engaged artists, both emerging and established. Rhona Hoffman Gallery has been celebrated for the representation and exhibition of marginalised voices and subjects in the art world.

    HIBERNIAN ANTIQUE FAIR VIRTUAL EVENT ON JANUARY 16-17

    FROM jewellery to artwork there promises to be a diverse selection on offer at the virtual art fair which Hibernian Antique Fairs will run on January 16-17. A link to access the fair will be made available on the Hibernian Antiques Fairs facebook page on January 16. Dealers taking part will show photographs of what is on offer plus contact and delivery details. Among those taking part are Treasures Irish Art of Athlone. They will show a number of works by the self taught London born Irish painter Ken Moroney (1949-2018). He specialised in Impressionist painting and romantic Edwardian style subjects.
