A spectacular single owner sale of a collection formed from the late 1940’s to the 1970’s by Dr Bryan G. Alton and his wife Winnie comes up at James Adam in Dublin on September 6. One of Ireland’s best known and respected physicians Bryan Alton amassed a quality and eclectic collection of fine furniture, porcelain, silver, objets d’art, old master and modern paintings and graphics, icons and exotic items. A highly regarded professional he served as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, as Master Warden of the Corporation of Goldsmiths of Dublin and on the Board of the National Gallery of Ireland. Dr. Alton died in 1991. Highlights of this sale of 319 lots include a superb set of four Irish Georgian silver candlesticks made in Dublin by Michael Cormick and William Townsend circa 1760 estimated at €12,000-14,000. There is a spectacular George III inlaid and painted sycamore bowfront side cabinet, fashioned in the manner of London cabinet-makers Mayhew and Ince (15,000-20,000) and the sale includes Old Master paintings and some remarkable pieces of 18th century Meissen. The annual summer auction of arts and antiques by Dolan’s is on view this Bank Holiday weekend in a marquee in the Connemara village of Ballyconneely. The auction of 600 lots is over two days on August 1 and 2. A highlight is Window Sill by William John Leech RHA, a view through the diamond paned mullioned window at Candy Cottage, the artist’s home.
There are important works by Sean Keating, Louis le Brocquy, Kenneth Webb, Tony O’Malley, Robert Taylor Carson, Mark O’Neill, Markey Robinson, Thomas Ryan, Richard Kingston, Eileen Meagher and Arthur Maderson. The sale features antiques and collectibles, silver, books and rugs.

This pair of antique bronze ormolu ewers has created quite a stir at Lynes and Lynes in Cork. They are due up at auction at a house sale in Glounthaune, Co. Cork on July 23. Lot 110 is estimated at just 200-300, but it has around considerable interest.
This is a small house contents auction on the premises at The Highlands, Glounthaune, Co. Cork for the estate of the late Peter Rota. It comprises antique and decorative furniture, rugs, collectible porcelain and glass, mirrors, clocks and household effects. The catalogue is online.
You Bowie, me Jane. Hard on the heels of Sotheby’s announcement of the sale of David Bowie’s Collection in London next November (see post on antiquesandartireland.com for July 14) comes the news that Julien’s Auctions in Hollywood will offer the Jane Fonda Collection in a live and online sale on September 23. Property from the collection of the Oscar winning actress, author, fitness guru, philanthropist and producer will cover items from both her career and her personal life. Highlights include an Andy Warhold 1982 pop lithograph of Fonda as Barbarella, her red and black striped leotard from the cover of the Jane Fonda Workout book, her collection of bespoke Atelier Versace garments and the Yves St. Laurent Oscar acceptance speech suit for Klute. A canary yellow Gianni Versace Couture gown worn by Jane Fonda to the 69th Academy Awards in 1997 ($3,000-5,000).
The summer auction at Woodwards in Cork on July 23 features garden statues and benches as well as furniture. Included is a pair of lions on plinths from Underhill House in Dunmanway (5,000-7,000), a pair of Georgian style cast iron seats (3,000-4,000), large garden vases (700-1,200) and a pair of reclining lions (700-1,200). Furniture includes a Victorian sofa table (1,200-1,500), a Victorian chest of drawers (300-400) and a large gilt framed wall mirror (500-1,000).

There were over 19,000 visitors to the various displays and auctions spanning Decorative Arts, Antiquities, Old Master & British Paintings, Prints and Drawings, Books and Manuscripts and the Exceptional sale at Classic Week at Christie’s. The week achieved a total of £109,038,888. There was a strong average sell-through rate of 87% by value across the 14 sales, with over 1,000 registered bidders from 50 countries, 695 registered online bidders and substantial cross-category buying. The auctions were highlighted by Rubens’s masterpiece Lot and his Daughters, which at £44.8 million achieved the highest price for a work of art at auction this year.
