    LEGENDARY DESIGNERS AT MID-CENTURY MODERN SALE

    Legendary designers like Eileen Gray, Niels Otto Moller, Arne Vodder, Mario Bellini, Finn Juhl and Angelo Lelli and a curated selection of artists from Dorothy Cross, Nathalie du Pasquier, Sinead ni Mhaonaigh to John Shinnors, John Boyd and Guggi feature at Adams autumn Mid-Century Modern timed online sale which runs until November 7. Design highlights in a selection that includes tables, chairs, lighting, mirrors, cabinets, glassware and desks include a five piece “Camaleonda” sofa by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, one of the first truly modular sofa designs (€10,000-€15,000), and the Transat chair by Eileen Gray (€2,000-€3,000).  Art highlights include Road to Carraroe by John Shinnors (€15,000-€20,000), Untitled by the French born Milan based artist and designer Nathalie de Pasquier (€4,000-€6,000) and Brompton V by the English expressionist abstract artist Albert Irvin (1922-2015).  Viewing from this sale of 20th century design and contemporary art gets underway at Adams next Friday (November 3) and the catalogue is online.

    COMPETITIVE BIDDING FOR JOSEPH WALSH ASH TABLE AT ADAMS

    Ebb by Joseph Walsh made 9,500 at hammer

    A total of 31 bids later the seven bidders competing for this Joseph Walsh Studio piece at the James Adam Mid Century Modern sale today saw it knocked down for a hammer price of 9,500 over an estimate of 2,000-3,000. The table is Ash was purchased from the Joseph Walsh Studio and came complete with an official certificate, Niamh Barry’s Touch Vessels failed to find a buyer, a pair of c1950 valet stands by Fratelli Reguitti made 8,500, a pair of lady chairs by Marco Zanuso made 7,000, a set of eight Danish Model 62 rosewood chairs by Niels Otto Moller made 15,000, a teak Spade chair by Finn Juhl made 5,500, an oil on panel portrait of a young girl by Harrington Mann made 11,000 (1864-1937), a charcoal drawing by Alice Maher entitled Lovers made 5,500 and Rhapink Nudge by Richard Gorman made 5,000.

    An auction of 20th century and quality contemporary design furniture by  de Veres takes place at the Royal College of Physicians, Kildare St., Dublin  at 6 p.m. on October 4.  There are Danish and Italian pieces from the 1950’s, ’60’s and ’70’s with work by designers like Finn Juhl, Arne Vodder, Niels Moller, Philippe Starck, Willy Rizzo, C + B Italia and Poltrona Frau. There will be some lots of modern Irish art with work by Hughie O’Donoghue, Patrick Scott, John Noel Smith, Sean McSweeney, Barrie Cooke and Felim Egan.

    The catalogue cover lot is this large pineapple form champagne ice bucket by Mauro Manetti. Lot 27 is an unusual  cocktail table with hinged burr walnut top that opens to reveal its contents.  The catalogue is online.  Here is a small selection:

    POET SOFAS BY FINN JUHL AT DUBLIN AUCTION

    A rare pair of Poet sofas by Danish designer Finn Juhl (1911-1989) – whose house north of Copenhagen marked the very beginning of open plan living – come up at de Veres design and art auction at Kildare St., Dublin on April 28. The sofas, regarded as a triumph of early Danish design, are from a private Irish collection.  He designed the sofas for the Juhl house at Charlottenlund north of Copenhagen.  The house was revolutionary and offered garden views from every room.  The sofas are estimated at 3,000-5,000.
    They were acquired in Copenhagen in 1950 by the vendors parents, who visited Denmark and Sweden with Ivan and Myrtle Allen.  The auction is on view today, tomorrow and Monday. Another lot is a pair of Progetti open armchairs by Giorgetti  (1,400-1,800).  The sale offers 20th century design furniture and about 40 lots of contemporary Irish art.
