    THE ONLINE MARCH OF THIS SUMMER OF AUCTIONS

    THIS summer of auctions is continuing at a brisk pace. A variety of interesting and one off lots will come under the hammer in Ireland over the next few days. More than 600 lots will come under the hammer at Fonsie Mealy’s sale of contents from Osberstown House, Naas on July 27.  Osberstown is an  elegant country home with all the trappings that make such places special. Hunting through the catalogue you will find everything from a four poster bed and garden statues to antique furniture and rugs, a console mirror and even an Irish silver replica of the Phoenix monument at Phoenix Park. There are comfortable button back leather library armchairs, painting and limited edition prints by Pauline Bewick, a Victorian breakfront wardrobe, a walnut dining suite, an Arts and Crafts five drawer chest, a selection of artworks, a cylinder bureau, a cheval mirror and much more to choose from.Viewing by appointment will be available on Monday.  The catalogue is online and the sale will be online only from Castlecomer.

    UPDATE: The Osberstown House sale realised over €370,000 on the hammer. The top lot was a massive pair of recumbent Great Danes by Triton 2001 in a limited edition 21/100 which made €5,800 at hammer.

    If you picture yourself as a Viking warrior slashing and burning your way through oodles of Covid restrictions and combatting bureaucratic enemies more fearsome and confusing than any ancient dragons then Sean Eacretts auction in Ballybrittas, Co. Laois on July 26 is for you. He is selling MGM props from Vikings and Game of Thrones online on Monday.  International interest is guaranteed but estimates are reasonable. A pair of tall metal candleabra from Game of Thrones is estimated at €400-€800 and King Ivor’s throne from Vikings season four is estimated at €300-500.  Or you might prefer King Alfred’s throne from season five.  There are special tables and boat chairs along with a selection of axes, cabinets and chests in highly decorative hardwood from the Great Hall of Kattegat as filmed in Ashford, Co. Wicklow.  The sale features fine art, antiques and collectibles as part one and MGM props as part two.

    Meantime Aidan Foley’s summer sale of antiques and interiors online from Kilcolgan, Co. Galway takes place today and tomorrow. There is art by George Gillespie, Maurice Wilks, Graham Knuttel, Arthur Maderson, John Skelton, Colin Middleton and others.   The auction offers Persian rugs, antique furniture, silver, Waterford Crystal, a pair of 19th century military epaulettes, old banknotes and garden furniture.The pub section, which is always popular, includes a Bendigo Tobacco mirror from a pub clearance in Ballyhaunis as well s prints, collectibles and glassware.  The online sale is on view today in Kilcolgan and the online auction is at 11 am tomorrow and on Monday.

    Contents from Osberstown House, Naas, Co. Kildare will come under the hammer at an online sale by Fonsie Mealy on July 27. More than 600 lots will come under the hammer. Viewing will be available by appointment on July 23, 24 and 26. The sale will be live online in Castlecomer, but there will be no public attendance.

    WILLIAM KENT TABLES AT SOTHEBY’S TREASURES SALE

    These back to back library tables are among the highlights at Sotheby’s Treasures sale in London on July 6. Attributed to William Kent they formed part of the original furnishings of Tottenham Park, Wiltshire, a house designed by Richard Boyle (1694-1753), 3rd Earl of Burlington and 4th Earl of Cork, for his sister Juliana. Known as the Architect Earl he is remembered for bringing Palladian architecture to England and Ireland. Tottenham was one of his first professional projects and among the earliest manifestations of the neo-Palladian aesthetic he championed with his protege William Kent. Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, now home to the Royal Academy, is one of his designs.  The George II tables are estimated at £400,000-£600,000. UPDATE: THESE WERE UNSOLD

    SUNDAY ONLINE SALE AT HEGARTY’S IN BANDON

    MORE than 300 lots will come under the hammer at Hegarty’s live online auction in Bandon on July 4. Among them are a pair of late 19th century silver tazzas made in Dublin c1892 with the maker mark MH. They are estimated at 700-1,400. The sale features antique furniture, jewellery and collectibles.     This pair of 19th century bookcases with brass mounts comes up at Victor Mee‘s June Decorative Art sale which gets underway online at 2 pm today. Lot 95 has an estimate of €1,000-€2,000. Among other lots of note in this two day auction are; a 19th century kitchen table in elm; an oak bank of 15 shop drawers; a pair of upholstered easy armchairs in the Howard style; a Georgian four poster bed; a cast iron gothic bench and a pair of moulded sphinxes.

    ANTIQUE FURNITURE AT MARSHS IN CORK

    A selection of antique furniture is due to come under the hammer at Marshs sale in Cork on June 26.  The sale will be online but there is to be physical viewing at Rochfords Lane (off Grand Parade and South Mall in Cork city centre) next Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10.30 am to 7 pm on each day. Undoubtedly there will be much interest in eleven hide upholstered Cork 11-bar dining chairs from the Christian Brothers House at North Monastery in Cork. The nine chairs and two carvers are estimated at €2,000-€3,000. A set of six upholstered 9-bar Cork chairs from the same source has an estimate of €1,500-€2,000. Other lots of note are an important Irish Chippendale knee-hole writing desk (€2,000-€3,000); a Regency rosewood secretaire (€1,500-€2,000); a Georgian mahogany two door press, made in Cork (€800-€1,000) and a Georgian longcase clock with brass and silver dial by John Ottiwell, Limerick, 1766.  There is a collection of porcelain, books, mirrors, clocks and collectibles.

    GREAT IRISH MACE FEATURES IN PORTRAIT AT MATTHEWS

    This Irish School portrait of Robert Rochfort (1661-1727) features the Great Irish Mace, which represented the authority of the English King in the Irish House of Parliament. The portrait is lot 2453 at Matthews four day online sale from June 19-22. The Great Irish Mace, over five feet in length, had finely chased floral designs with rose of thistle and fleur-de-lis motifs. Matthews attribute the portrait to George Morphy (1655-1715). King James II is believed to have melted down the mace to help pay his war debts.

    ANTIQUE FURNITURE AT WOODWARDS IN CORK

    A selection of antique furniture will come up at Woodwards in Cork on June 19. Among the lots on offer are an unusual inlaid Indian card table in need of some restoration (€600-€800) and a Georgian walnut bachelors chest with a similar estimate. Other lots include a Georgian mahogany bureau, a Victorian tambour front desk, a Louis XV inlaid card table,  an Edwardian envelope  card table and a pair of bookcases by Hobbs and Co. London. There is a Glasgow longcase clock, a Chinese Chippendale style cabinet by Edwards and Roberts, a William IV teapoy, a set of six Chippendale style dining chairs and a pair of Art Deco mirrors.  Among the other lots are a Coalbrookdale garden bench, a cast iron five piece garden suite, Waterford Crystal, silver and collectibles.  The sale is on view from 10 am to 5 pm all this week and the catalogue is online.

    TREASURES OF A STORIED MANHATTAN COLLECTION AT CHRISTIE’S

    This unusual early 19th century Regency ormolu and patinated bronze mantel comes up at an online sale at Christie’s in New York from June 15-July 1. Treasures of a Storied Manhattan Collection features 130 lots of European furniture and decorative art, Chinese furniture and ceramics, 19th century porcelain and silver, and 20th/21st century works of art from the Park Avenue pied-à-terre formerly owned by Enid Annenberg Haupt, the American publisher and philanthropist. The mantel pictured here, made by Thomas Weeks, is estimated at $70,000-100,000.
