This Irish School portrait of Robert Rochfort (1661-1727) features the Great Irish Mace, which represented the authority of the English King in the Irish House of Parliament. The portrait is lot 2453 at Matthews four day online sale from June 19-22. The Great Irish Mace, over five feet in length, had finely chased floral designs with rose of thistle and fleur-de-lis motifs. Matthews attribute the portrait to George Morphy (1655-1715). King James II is believed to have melted down the mace to help pay his war debts.

A selection of antique furniture will come up at Woodwards in Cork on June 19. Among the lots on offer are an unusual inlaid Indian card table in need of some restoration (€600-€800) and a Georgian walnut bachelors chest with a similar estimate. Other lots include a Georgian mahogany bureau, a Victorian tambour front desk, a Louis XV inlaid card table, an Edwardian envelope card table and a pair of bookcases by Hobbs and Co. London. There is a Glasgow longcase clock, a Chinese Chippendale style cabinet by Edwards and Roberts, a William IV teapoy, a set of six Chippendale style dining chairs and a pair of Art Deco mirrors. Among the other lots are a Coalbrookdale garden bench, a cast iron five piece garden suite, Waterford Crystal, silver and collectibles. This unusual early 19th century Regency ormolu and patinated bronze mantel comes up at an online sale at Christie’s in New York from June 15-July 1. Treasures of a Storied Manhattan Collection features 130 lots of European furniture and decorative art, Chinese furniture and ceramics, 19th century porcelain and silver, and 20th/21st century works of art from the Park Avenue pied-à-terre formerly owned by Enid Annenberg Haupt, the American publisher and philanthropist. The mantel pictured here, made by Thomas Weeks, is estimated at $70,000-100,000.
This exceptional pair of bronze garden classical lions with a top estimate of 4,000 sold for a hammer price of €4,500 at Hegarty’s sale in Bandon today. They attracted a number of competitive bidders on the phone and the internet. An 18th century Irish silver teapot made 1,700, an early 19th century silver serving platter and mazarin grill by Paul Storr made 6,900 and a pair of foldover rosewood card tables made 4,400.

An unframed, unsigned pencil sketch – “Bridge over the Awbeg at Buttevant Castle” – comes up at Aidan Foley’s online auction at Doneraile today. Lot 301 dates to the 1840’s and seems to be in good condition. A purchaser might set out to solve the mystery of who made it. The auction features a broad mix of antique furniture and collectible items as well as art by Albert Hartland, Arthur Maderson, Pauline Bewick, Con Campbell, Lorna Miller, Marie Carroll and others.

This mid 18th century Irish Georgian fold over tea table comes up at Hegarty’s online auction in Bandon, Co. Cork on June 6 with an estimate of €1,000-€1,400. The sale will include two Cork family collections from Oysterhaven and Kinsale and offers a variety of antique furniture, silver, art and jewellery. Three live sales of Design at Christie’s in New York totalled $17,436,000, including Paris in New York: A Private Collection of Royère, Vautrin, Jouve, Tiffany and Design. With very strong, spirited global cross-category bidding, these outstanding results demonstrated the strength and depth of the Design market. There was global participation with bidders from 28 countries across five continents. Hammer prices were 178% above the low estimate. The first dedicated various owner sale of works by Tiffany Studios held at Christie’s since 2014 brought in $3,903,375.
